I note the following from the Eastman's article: "Several years ago I spent several days working in a genealogy society's booth at the Eastern States Exposition, an event locally referred to as "The Big E." This Exposition is similar to a state fair, except that it covers all six New England states. It was an eye-opening experience. More than one million people attended this 17-day event, and an estimated 750,000 of those people walked by the genealogy booth where I worked. To be sure, not all of the attendees stopped to talk, but thousands did. Yes, thousands. I think we (the society) talked with more people at this one 17-day event than we do the rest of the year at all the genealogy events combined." Perhaps D-OGS should consider having a booth at the upcoming Durham CenterFest? Perhaps a coalition of D-OGS and the other local historical societies should consider a booth at the state fair? jeff -----Original Message----- >From: Richard Ellington <[email protected]> >Sent: Aug 26, 2008 9:49 AM >To: D-OGS closed list <[email protected]> >Subject: [NCDOGS] Eastman Genealogical Newsletter article > >There is an excellent article in Dick Eastman's newsletter today. There is an excellent article in Dick Eastman's newsletter today. The title of the article is Expanding the Reach of Genealogical Societies and Conferences". You can read it at: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/08/expanding-the-r.html He discusses the functions and forms of societies; how they grew and decline. He has some good thoughts that we all could benefit from. He points out that many societies need more motivation and leadership. Many members are just there to "cherry pick" without adding anything beneficial to others in their society or the public, in general. I'm sure we have some of those, too. We can look at his comments and see if they apply to us. What can we do (all of us, not just a few members) to improve the field of genealogical or family history research for others that are looking in our area? We can share what we already have and endeavor to make more of it available to the masses via records transcriptions, indexing local materials, etc. I'm sure that all of us, whether in Durham or Orange counties or Texas or New York, have much to contribute to the public good. All that good stuff gets out on the web because folks like us put it there. We can't wait for Ancestry to do it because they will take longer and want to be paid to access it. So, why don't we do just that? Blow the dust off that list of family members you extracted from the marriage or birth registers (for instance) and send it in to the editors of the Trading Path Journal to share with everyone. I'll bet it will surprise you with the response you will receive. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. Harvey, I have been a Mac user for 20 years and bought the first version of the genealogy gedcom software named "Reunion." Reunion is a family- owned and maintained business, now in its ninth version, with as much support as anyone would want, although I have never needed it because the Manual/Help is so thorough. You can import your gedcom files (not "family files") from Family Tree Maker into Reunion. There used to be a PC version of Reunion, created by the same Lester Products; but this was sold many years ago and is now defunct. The only bad thing I've ever heard about Reunion is the sad moanings by the PC folks who can no longer use it. I started out with PAF from the LDS (Latter Day Saints Church), which I don't think is maintained any longer for the Mac. PAF pales by comparison to other software. If you have an Intel Mac, you can have both worlds: the Windows world and the Mac worlds, in which case you can have virtually any software you would like. Please feel free to email me ([email protected]) if you have other questions about Mac genealogy software. You can download a demo version of Reunion from: http://www.leisterpro.com/ Melanie Crain On Aug 19, 2008, at 10:14 AM, Harvey Estes wrote: > We have recently acquired a Macintosh computer, and I need to find a > genealogy software package with a Mac version. Unless I'm mistaken I think it may be the only program for a Mac. I work with a mac user genealogist and I am impressed by notes and source options as well as expanded options on family pages. I continue with FTM because I'm a PC user and I have lots of complaints abt FTM but hang in because of familiarity. Thanks for asking. I am bound to be distantly related to some Dollars there. My great, great grandfather, Martin Dollar, was born in NC in about 1821. I believe Martin had a brother, Morgan, who was born there in 1826; and, a sister, Malinda, born there about 1816. They moved to Tennessee, then to St. Francis County, AR, by 1850. I'm wondering whether they were the children of Isaac Dotson Dollar, son of Jonathan Dollar, of Orange County, shown in the 1790 census. I plan to come to Chapel Hill about September 29-30 to do some research. I'm totally new to this and any help would be greatly appreciated. This article may be of interest to those of you familiar with Chapel Hill from having gone to school here, or who left here earlier. I happened across it to find the full title for Ernie Dollar. _http://www.newsobserver.com/news/orange/story/1163407.html_ (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/orange/story/1163407.html) Carol **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. It's great to see how much people have accomplished through perseverance or happenstance. It was one of the good meetings. Could you encourage a local society to include the same sort of program for their meeting? You never know what is possible till you try. And believe me, not much of what we heard about had to do with local genealogy. But that's the beauty of it, we all have ancestors somewhere and we enjoy the sharing.
