    1. Re: [NCDOGS] D-OGS CIG BRUCE STROWD AND ERNEST HUTCHINS
    2. If there is a descendant of Ernest Hutchins of Orange Co., b. ca 1890, out there, I have a photo of him, a handsome young man, standing beside my grandfather, Bruce Strowd, in the well known pic of Bruce in his twin steer calf cart on muddy Franklin St. in ca 1903. I have the original photo ...Bruce had written Ermest's name on the back.  Hopefully this will be the answer to the comment re the "unknown young man" whenever this photo is published.  Maybe this info should be forwarded to the photo archives at the UNC library? ... I checked out Doc. the American South at UNC in which Battle expressed his admiration for the father of Ernest, whom Battle wrote as his living near the foot of Strowd Hill, toward the Chatham line, on his farm.  And I already knew that Mr. Hutchins Sr. had served on same committee as Bruce's grandfather and Julian S. Carr and without looking, I think Paul Camerson, to bring the train spur to C.H....thus the railroad station and the Whooper in Carrboro. 3. Carol, Wish I had more time to surf the web! I can tell you that I would highly recommend the movie "Moving Midway" that is currently playing at the Varsity in Chapel Hill. I think people with a genealogical interest would enjoy it, especially those with research interests in the Triangle area, and I managed to drag my husband to see it this weekend. It is a low budget but full length documentary on the moving of the plantation house from Midway Plantation in Raleigh to a new site nearby (but out of the way of encroaching shopping malls). There is considerable discussion of the genealogy of the family and history of that immediate area, as well as footage of discussions with descendants of former slaves who live in the area (and some who have moved far away and really made something of themselves in impressive ways). Ava From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 22, 2008 7:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NCDOGS] D-OGS CIG Every month for a very long time now I have posted a topic for each month's CIG meeting and I've requested folks to send in suggestions for us to discuss at the next meeting. There are a few good souls out there who unfailingly send along some URLs or articles for the agenda, but I know there are many others who regularly surf the web for items that enhance their genealogical research, but who have not yet contributed to the CIG. Perhaps you are one of them. I suspect you may have some valuable contributions to make to our learning. We've heard from some folks across the country saying they regret that they are unable to attend meetings, and they request minutes of meetings, summaries of presentations, and so forth. It is important for you all to know that you can play a very important role in the operation of D-OGS by contributing to the CIG agenda so that everyone can benefit from what you have learned. After all, near or far, we're all in this together. I have occasionally wondered why I don't hear from more of you from out of town. It occurs to me that perhaps you don't know what to send, whether it would have value to others, or if we have already discussed that topic. Well it's time to clear up that point. I've broken our agenda loosely into topics or headings so I could present it in a somewhat orderly fashion, but that's not to say we always stick strictly to the outline of course. Sometimes a subject hits home so directly that we spend our entire meeting with it and often run overtime. I think it might help you see what might be of interest to us and what kind of things are of interest to the group. I've taken the outline we use and illustrated what might fit in any of the broad general topics. If you think you can find a web site or an article that might fit into one of these categories, won't you please send it to me? And another one next month? It doesn't take long and it would be very welcome. Take a look at the format below and see if there is something you can contribute. Scan an article, send a URL, ask a question, the summary of the meeting will appear in next month's online newsletter. Thanks very much for your participation. 2. Can anyone tell me of a company that produces a reliable external hard drive? Thanks, Bebe Fox -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 9:16 pm Subject: [NCDOGS] Computer SIG - Saturday September 20 Believe it or not it's time for another Computer SIG meeting at 9:00 this Saturday AM in the small conference room at the Chapel Hill Public Library. I need you to send me some sites appropriate to the topic this month so we will have a lot to talk about. The best ones come from you, not me! We are fortunate to have Richard Ellington coming to present a topic on computers and what makes them tick, so if there is anything you've always wanted to ask now's your chance. Topic: "New Developments in Technology" Even though the dates have been changed for our meetings recently, the D-OGS Computer Special Interest Group (CIG) continues to meet as regularly as possible. I know this may make it more difficult to follow our topics of discussion, but we will try to pull together everyone's needs and interests and make the September meeting useful to everyone who can attend. We will be discussing new developments in technology, with a special emphasis on what that means for researchers. We'll also emphasize what is out there that is free or cheap so that being current doesn't have to mean you must bend or break your budget. I'd like folks from near and far to send me some of the most interesting things they've discovered lately so we can share them with the group. Please send in interesting new web sites, and other items you'd like to share with the group well ahead of time so it can be included on the agenda. 3. Do you have anything of interest to share with all us D-OGS? How about a reunion notice or a good book you've found or a new source for "old Orange" stuff? Please share it with everyone by sending it to me so it can appear in the newsletter! I am working on the October newsletter now so send me your news. 3. I have used their services before as well and I was very pleased. It was 10 years ago when my youngest sister, Alice, died. My other sister and I decided to make photo albums for all family members--total of 6--showing Alice from baby to adult. CCI did the work on the pictures for me and I was very pleased. These albums are about 3/4 inch thick and have a lot of pictures of her through her whole life. Of course this was before digital photography so no DVD was provided. A couple of years ago, my father found a bunch of photos he had taken while he was overseas during WWII (and some at home). They scanned and reprinted the whole batch at quite reasonable rates and now I have two albums made from the reprints (one for me, one for my sister). There was one picture that was badly faded that my father originally identified as his father. The scanned and enhanced version came back so clear that he realized that it was actually his brother instead! 3. I have been on a picture binge. I found a color slide of my deceased uncle and aunt. Though a lovely woman, she was camera shy so there are few pictures of her. I tried to get prints made at the drugstore but Kodak sent them back with a note saying they are no longer providing that service. So I took the slide to a local photography shop and it made prints which I sent to my cousins and the couple's grandchildren. That is how it started. Next I took my great grandfather's large photographic portrait to the same shop and had 8 x 10 reductions made. The shop corrected some damaged areas of the original and the prints look great. I took one copy to his only surviving 87 year old grandchild. I have an old school group picture which with a magnifying glass you can just make out my 14 year old father among many children. The photography shop enlarged the picture of my father and now I have a rare portrait of him in his last year of formal education. I was so intrigued by what the photography shop was able to do with this group picture I had a poster size enlargement made with the intention of giving it to the school. I like it so much I am tempted to keep it. I feel fortunate to have found a local source for these and many more photographic services which may be of interest to the DOGS membership.
