Hi, I just received from the print on demand (POD) company in San Francisco, Blurb.com, my 7th book. Doesn't cost a penny to use their neat download, and when and if you send your book in via the net, which takes 30 min. or less, you have 15 days in which to order a copy if you want one...which you will! The one I got today, Vignettes of Old Orange County, contains a number of old photos as well as my research and personal stories regarding the area. Mr. Ellington is interested in ordering one which he hopefully will show to local members as a great way to keep your photos as well as your memories. I am NOT trying to sell any books!! as did this mainly for my own family. I have added one dollar to the cost so the company will keep track of the sales. These beautiful books are already, in my opinion, too expensive, but I didn't have to make any investment except time. I JUST WANT YOU ALL TO SEE THE POTENTIAL FOR YOU KEEPING YOUR OWN AND YOUR FAMILY INFO AND PICS IN AN ORGANIZED AND ATTRACTIVE MANNER. LOT'S OF FUN, TOO! Bebe If you would like to have jpg's of any of the photos or copies of any research I will be glad to send them to you. At the moment I'm working on a volume which pertains primarily to Franklin Street for their collection. "They" say that we are each a "library" of knowledge which will be gone when we are gone...soooo, -----Original Message----- From: larrypeg <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 29 Oct 2008 1:29 pm Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] D-OGS CIG Meeting ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 3:24 PM Subject: [NCDOGS] D-OGS CIG Meeting > > Although you've read this in your monthly newsletter, I'll repeat it here > just to be sure everyone knows. Although you've read this in your monthly newsletter, I'll repeat it here just to be sure everyone knows. The Library is having an event on our customary meeting day, so we have been asked to change our meeting date. We will discuss the kinds of things we want to include in a CD or DVD to share with our families and will cover the topics suggested by D-OGS members. Perhaps some old family photos scanned for sharing, a pedigree including a new line, a chapter of your shared genealogy including some new developments since last year, etc. If you have any good pointers for us in preparing content for a CD, please send me an email and I'll share it with the group. The D-OGS Computer Interest Group Meeting will meet on Saturday morning, 1 November 2008 (note the date change) at 9 a.m. at the Chapel Hill Library downstairs in the large downstairs conference room. This was noted in the NEHGS newsletter Vol. 10, No. 43. We could have told them that, couldn't we? Internet Searching Strengthens Brain Function Who new that Google could actually improve your mental health? A new study at the University of California, Los Angeles has been measuring the brain activity of older adults as they performed searches on the Web. Two groups were used by Dr. Gary Small. One group had minimal experience with computers, while the other identified themselves as knowledgeable internet users. Those who were in the latter group showed more than double the neural activation than those less experienced computer users. This activity primarily occurred in the region of the brain that controls decision-making and complex reasoning. CNN reporter Madison Park recently reported on this fascinating study, and you can read about it at _www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/10/14/google.brain/index.html_ (http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/10/14/google.brain/index.html) . I am putting together one for beginners for the DA winter series and would be willing to offer one night. I am not a geneaology expert but have expertise in resources, project management, and research - and have put lots of stories together. I have received a request from the Carrboro Recreation & Parks department to propose that D-OGS give a short series of lecture-style genealogy workshops (3-5 sessions total) this Winter and/or Spring. These sessions could be very general in nature. These are the same folks that provided us with the Carrboro Century Center facility for our Olde Orange Family History Day event. Suggestions for sessions might include: - Beginning genealogy - start with yourself - Readily Available Public Records to Search - Census, Land, Marriage & Death, etc. - DNA & genealogy - what can it do for you? - Genealogy software - Online Genealogy - using the Web to search I would be willing to do a session or two; would anyone else volunteer to hold a session or two? If so, let me know what your anticipated topic would be. We will probably have a good bit of flexibility in holding these sessions. If materials are needed (handouts, etc.), I'm sure that the Rec & Parks folks would provide them. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K.
