We've been considering a topic for a future D-OGS meeting that features copyright issues and so when I heard Brook Gladstone on her program "On The Media" this weekend, I paid close attention. She was interviewing Dr. James Boyle, a Duke professor who has written a book _The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of Mind_ (http://astore.amazon.com/jamesboylesbooks-20/detail/0300137400) and I thought, "there's our speaker". Unfortunately, several dozen or hundred other people or organizations were thinking the same thing and when I contacted him to ask about a program he graciously declined, but offered us something in return - to go to his web site and download a pdf version of his ebook gratis, and perhaps that would give us a sense of the subject. And of course, that is the whole idea of the subject. Go here for his website _http://www.thepublicdomain.org/download/_ (http://www.thepublicdomain.org/download/) . I'm sure you'll find the book most interesting, and you'll see why it is not a simple subject. Genealogists probably grapple with copyright issues as much as any academic, and don't always have the best resources to guide them. Just ask Sharon DeBartolo Carmack about that. She wrote a book as a result of her brush with copyright issues. Enjoy the book, with all thanks to Dr. Boyle Carol **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now. Richard, Are you really sure that there ARE 1752 marriages in that index? I am curious, because the indexes that they had at the Vital Records Office in Hillsborough were LABELLED 1752-, but did not in actuality contain much from before 1781. Marty, I did speak to archivists in Raleigh, and they indicated that they did have microfilms of the earliest marriages, back to 1752, but did NOT have the originals of the very early ones. I found this odd, but the two archivists there at the time had no idea what had become of them. Perhaps the more experienced archivists who might know weren't around to ask at that time. Next time I am there I hope to pursue this a bit further. If it were to be digitized and selected portions of it put on the D-OGS web page so Google Alerts could pick it up, it might benefit from the broad access the web offers. Also, it might be worthwhile putting a note on the various surname newslists for that name. There is one for Brannick on Rootsweb, and there are numerous Brannicks on WorldConnect so there is bound to be someone interested. I bet the Osage Indian info would be very welcome somewhere. The D-OGS Computer Interest Group Meeting will meet on Saturday morning, 13 December 2008 at 9 a.m. at the Chapel Hill Library downstairs in the small conference room. Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC Topic: "It Was a Great Year - Positively Electrifying - and Digitizing" The economy has undergone some upheaval in recent months that may have an effect on genealogy in general and on individual researchers. Maybe that big trip to visit all the cemeteries in the region of your ancestors' homes is not as realistic as it appeared to be when you first planned it, but perhaps technology can step in and lend a hand. Did you put that fancy new digital camera on hold for a bit and now you're looking for a way to work with images that you acquire from other sources? Where are they, and what are the copyright issues involved in using them? On the other hand, is now the time for you to stay home like a bear in hibernation and put the whole pile of material into print? What do you need to accomplish this now that it's not as simple as merely sharpening your pencil? What about those POD sites? Changes happen in genealogy almost as fast as in technology and sometimes we need a hand in keeping track of them and sorting out the things that will help us the most. Tell us what you have found most useful in 2008 and how you used it to advance your genealogy. Let's nominate the most useful innovation for the year. Think websites, mega-subscription sites, cruises, camera equipment, file storage facilities, software, what have you. Because new websites pop up every day, we can't possibly each know about all of them, so send me some URLs for sites that have caught your attention recently and we will visit them and discuss them. (This goes for distant D-OGS as well, we need your input for the CIG to be a success, and you always benefit from what others bring to the CIG each time you read the summary of the meetings on the members-only page.) As usual there will be an article to share, and several new sites I've come across. If you have made a CD to share as a result of our discussing the topic please bring it along and let us take a look at it. Please bear in mind , what makes the CIG worthwhile is your participation! Let's keep the show on the road. See you in December! Carol Please send in interesting new web sites, and other items you'd like to share with the group well ahead of time so they can be included on the agenda. **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Hi Carol, So sorry to have missed the DOGS holiday party. Lee and I are out of town -- long story that I'll tell you when I see you. I have downloaded the conference schedule and ripped my hair out trying to decide what I want to go to. It is so exciting, but I found myself wanting to be in 6 places at once for most of the day! I haven't formally signed up yet, as I kind of have been waiting for the online registration to start. I am planning to attend for all four days, however, and am considering taking the May 12 extra session as well. Do you by any chance have any info on particularly good lecturers or anything that I should be sure not to miss? I definitely want to go to at least one Mills session, etc, but am pretty clueless about most of the people. Again, hope the party was lots of fun -- I was sorry to have missed it! Details below. I have received a number of questions, especially the last two days. What exit number on 40?: East or West bound, Exit 278. Do I need to make a reservation?: No reservation needed. The RSVP was just to give Golden Corral an idea on how many were coming. No problem if you decide to come the last minute. Will we have the Quiz again this year: Yes we will. Carol has sent me the Quiz and I have printed out enough copies for all. Cathy has the prizes ready. Please join us if you can. See you tonight.
