    1. [NCDOGS] Save the date: Neighborhoods Hike is Sun, March 29 at 1pm
    2. John Schelp
    3. Neighborhoods Hike: West Durham, East Campus & Beyond Sun, March 29 at 1PM Meet at Ninth & Green (free) What's buried under Duke Hospital? Where did Madonna take early dance lessons? Why is Walltown called Walltown? Which famous songwriter was born on a kitchen table behind Donuts? Where was the West Durham airport? Why wasn't Cameron Indoor Stadium built on Ninth Street? Where was Kevin Costner spotted in his boxer shorts, near East Campus? What's a Pinhooker? Why do neighborhoods change so quickly in Durham? 2.5-mile loop starts in a mill village where we'll see an old liquor house, Buck Dean's bungalow, a Sears House and a quiet urban garden in Old West Durham. We'll then continue into Watts-Hillandale and walk past Oval Park and the old Watts Hospital. We'll go down a hidden alley and see where a songwriter for Lou Rawls and Norah Jones was born. We'll also talk about the ridge, between the Neuse and Cape Fear basins, that forms the backbone of our town. We might even get into current events in the Bull City and talk about all this development around here. We'll head over to Walltown and hear about George Wall and Duke's original plans to build here. Then we'll see Richard Nixon's house in Trinity Heights and talk about the homes of Duke's famous faculty and coaches on Buchanan -- including John Spencer Bassett, Wallace Wade and Cap Card (father of Duke basketball). After hearing about Trinity Park, we'll cross East Campus, over to Ninth Street, past Erwin Cotton Mills and back to where we started. Local street historian John Schelp will narrate along the way. No need to register. Parking is available on streets near Ninth & Green. (Bike racks are also nearby.)  Optional post-hike beverages, further conversation at Dain's Place (754 9th Street). Co-sponsored by Museum of Durham History, Sierra Club, Open Durham and the Old West Durham Neighborhood Association. Rain or shine.

    1. [NCDOGS] TranscribeNC Transcription Project | State Archives
    2. D-OGS Info
    3. [Below is a transcription project of the North Carolina State Archives. If you are interested in volunteering, please see the descriptions and links below. Scott] Good afternoon, As you may know, The State Archives of North Carolina collects, preserves, manages and provides access to information that protects citizen rights, and documents North Carolina history and culture. With this in mind, we have developed “TranscribeNC,” a program that showcases select items from our collections to better engage the public and increase the accessibility of archival records. We are recruiting volunteers of all skill levels to help to transcribe the first of forthcoming collection items – World War I county draft board records arranged by county, and the travel writings of those North Carolinians fortunate to travel the nation and the world. The transcribed data will help to build incredibly valuable indexes searchable online through the State Archives’ website. Each of these archival collections – WWI draft lists and travel diaries among them – personalize the human experience and keep this state’s legacy alive. When complete, the data transcribed will be of importance to researchers and educators alike. We would appreciate If you would send this message to any students that may be interested in volunteering. Provided are links to TranscribeNC’s webpage [https://archives.ncdcr.gov/researchers/transcribenc], where there are instructions and tips for transcription, a guide, and instructional video, as well as the transcription site itself - FromThePage [https://fromthepage.com/ncdcr-ncarchives]. Or send a message to archives.webedit@ncdcr.gov for more information. Thanks so much! Best regards, Anna ANNA PEITZMAN Metadata Archivist, State Archives

    2. Ellington, Richard
    3. I got this reminder note from John Schelp: Neighborhoods Hike Not to be Missed Watts-Hillandale & Old West Durham newsletter (adapted) On Saturday, March 30, John Schelp, street historian, will lead his annual history hike through West Durham neighborhoods, Duke’s east campus, and beyond. If you are new to the area or just love the history and lore of Durham, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Witty, sincere, and fun, John has led this hike for more than a decade. The tour winds along neighborhood streets, back alleys, and across campus. Along the way, John will reveal what celebrity was born on a kitchen table in a house behind Monuts and who wrote the country hit “The Gambler.” He will explain why Walltown is called Walltown and why Duke Chapel was not built in Walltown Park. He will show you where Elvis slept, Madonna danced, and Kevin Costner appeared in boxer shorts. He will tell you what West Durham people were once willing to do just to get a little whiskey - and so much more! The tour begins at 10 a.m. and takes about two-and-a-half hours. Tour goers are asked to assemble at the corner of Green and Ninth Street a bit early. There is no registration, no fee. Just show up. Wear comfortable shoes! 2. Carol , I think the Clerk of Court for Orange County is writing a book about things that could be of help to some of us , especially land records and wills . I am not sure of his name but he helped me and I would suggest someone contact him to see if he could give us some hints as to looking up relatives and and records . I am sure we have had programs like this before but he might be a lead . let me know if I can help . Tommy Hunt PS: Another program might be interesting would be "hidden " cemeteries in Durham and Orange Counties . Surly there are family cemeteries around ( I know of 3 myself ). They are in the woods and no one knows of them . One is across from Jordan High School behind a day care center . Vandals destroy these on many occasions . The turnout was great and enhanced by a new member who arrived by air to locate his Laws family in Hillsborough. When you're a genealogist you'll never know who might turn up bearing the name you're looking for and sure enough, one of them was at the restaurant. We had some members or guests I didn't have a chance to speak to, another time. President David McCorkle compiled a quiz that kept us all on our toes as it included questions about not only events in NC history, but genealogy itself and genetic genealogy, a growing part of what we are all involved in. Working without a vice-president/program chair, he has kept the show on the road in good order for another year. Many thanks David! Nice wrap-up for another good year for D-OGS, thanks to everyone who works throughout the year to make it the organization it is so we can all continue to enjoy it.
