The Charles name from my research in Davidson & Orange Co.,NC was at first "Carl". I have a Barney Michael d. 1794 (Friedens Church)that married Mary Anna Charles (Carl) Maria Sophia Carl married a Christian Eberhard d. 1779. in old Rowan County. Christina Michel married a George Charles. I have only made one contact on the Carl family in 5 years.
