I've borrowed a copy of the 1778 Rowan County Tax List from our library, but I'm having difficulty understanding some of the terminology used in it. Can anyone help? 1. What does it mean ..... "... poles returned..." vs "... poles not returned..." ? 2. Who was subject to "... fourfold tax ..." ? 3. What does it mean when a tax amount is written as 1.16.8 ?
