If there are really exactly eight children, then this accounts for all of them, and is consistent with the presence of three daughters in the 1800 census. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XSB.2ACE/12322 Message Board Post: Family Tree Stories - Davidson County by Kathleen M. Craver mentions Henry & Catharine RIPPLE. Does anyone know any of the eight Ripple children's names? Or can anyone tell me more about this family? Included below is part of a 1998 posting by K. Bartram, whose email address is no longer valid. "Henry Ripple, b. 1758; d. 1835, who lived for most of his life in what is today the northern part of Davidson County, was married to Catherine Frey. They were the parents of 8 children, one of which was Elizabeth. Henry was a Hessian soldier, born in Roddenau, Germany...per the book, Family Tree Stories- Davidson County by Kathleen M. Craver." I have been trying to determine who a Catharine RIPPLE (born in North Carolina approx.1790) is. She could easily be a daughter or niece to the above Henry & Catharine Ripple. She was listed in the Woodard SUTHERLAND household in the 1850 Shelby County, Indiana and 1860 Boone County, Missouri census records. She does not appear in any 1870 census and most likely died between 1860 & 1870. Woodard SUTHERLAND married Ellen D. HUFF: June 29, 1841 in Shelby, Indiana. Catharine Ripple is listed with them in the next available census record (1850) and she also later moves to 2 different states with them. Could Catharine Ripple have been Mrs. Catharine Huff & later married RIPPLE? Or could she possibly be an earlier generation, such as a grandmother to either Woodard or Ellenor, therefore explaining her reason for living in the household? (There is about a 32 year age difference between her and them....) I do not know the names of Woodard or Ellenor's parents. Woodard Sutherland was a carpenter; moved from Indiana with his family to Illinois in 1857; and then to Missouri in 1858. He died some time after the 1880 census and before the 1900 census. Ellenor Huff Sutherland died some time after the 1900 census and before the 1910 census. 1850 Shelby County, IN Census: SUTHERLAND Woodard, head - 29 - IN Ellenor, wife - 28 - IN Tilson M., son - 7 - IN William. M., son - 5 - IN John R., son - 3 - IN Silven W., son - 1 - IN Ripple, Catharine, age 60, N.C. 1860 Columbia, Boone County, MO Census: SUTHERLAND Woodard William, head - 39 - IN - Carpenter Eleanor D, wife - 37 - IN John R., son - 14 - IN Silvin W, son - 12 - IN Mary M., daughter - 6 - IN Ripple, Catharine, age 72, N.C. These AMERICAN STATE PAPERS are documents by, for & about the Cherokee beginning in 1792. For now we have volume one completed and working on volume two. I have extracted most documents pertinent to the Cherokee although the complete volume covers many other tribes. They are located at www.rootsweb.com/~tnpolk2 behind RECORDS---under "C" for Cherokee Joyce Gaston Reece For anyone who wants more information, the web link to the US Serial Set, American State Papers, and other Congressional documents is the Century of Lawmaking site at: _http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/amlaw/lawhome.html_ (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/amlaw/lawhome.html) Of particular interest for those interested in the "emigration" of the Cherokee are the US Serial Set, specificially in the papers of the 23rd Congress. For general genealogical interests, the 23rd Congress also published a list of Pensioners of the US Government broken down by state. This site is well put together and informative from both a historical and genealogical perspective. Please note that the Serial Set is so extensive that the LOC has informed me that they do not plan on putting all of it on-line. Enjoy it and please note that the government can spend our tax dollars wisely!!! Best of wishes, Billy
