    1. DNA study – REED/ REID/ READ/ READE/ RIEDT
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Reed Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XSB.2ACE/12346 Message Board Post: For those who have unfortunately run into a genealogical "brick wall" concerning your Reed/Reid/Read/Reade/Riedt ancestor, science and technology has recently provided us with a very exciting and potent tool to aid us in our long-standing quest for identifying our ancestral heritage. To this end, the Reed Y-chromosome DNA Project was launched last year and is now up to twenty participants and counting. So if you, or a male relative of yours (father, husband, brother, cousin, etc.) have the surname of Reed (or any variant spelling), and descend from any of the Reed/Reid/Read/Reade/Riedt families of early Davidson Co., NC, then it might be something you’d want to take a look at. Results thus far in the ongoing project are posted at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/reed/. As a sidenote, for any potential participants who may be the least bit concerned about privacy-related issues, these are fully addressed within the links associated with the above web site. And since this international study only deals with a very tiny, and specific, segment of the entire DNA sequence, it can only be used to aid in scientifically confirming the degree of relatedness between the many Reed/Reid/Read, etc. study participants - merely to help us determine which participant we share a common Reed/Reid/Read, etc. ancestor with (if any), and estimate how many generations back this event likely occurred. In fact, this study has already allowed me to eliminate a couple of long-standing, potential Reed ancestors off of my own list, so that I am now able to focus on the remaining potential lines that I've assimilated in my many years of research to date. And obviously, as more and more study results (and hopefully matches, or near matches) come in from worldwide participants, our search can be even further narrowed, thus bringing us closer to scientifically identifying our "true" ancestral line, as well as their country of origin, etc., if we're fortunate. So, by all means, please participate if you can and see the above link for further details. A mere twelve (12) y-DNA marker test should be quite sufficient for now. Best wishes, Bob P.S. The aforementioned web site may also be referenced for a list of all "other" DNA -surname projects (hundreds) presently underway. Check it out; it'll be worth your while.

Surnames: Cole, Parke/Park, Nichols Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XSB.2ACE/12343 Message Board Post: There was a William Cole in what was then Rowan Co. NC but became Davidson Co. NC as early as 1760s or so. His land is shown on an early map of folks who had land along the Yadkin River that I have - it was on the Davidson Co. side of the Yadkin River in the Bald Mtn. area near Lick Creek. He may have incorporated the land that belonged to my ancestors George Parke & Agnes Nichols after George died. I have a record of him as becoming the guardian of Agne's younger children after George's death and will include it below. I have often wonderred what happened to my Agnes after that - she just seems to disappear and perhaps she also soon died.. I have no record of her remarrying. In 1785 William Cole, Justice of the County Court, had been appointed the guardian of the orphans of a George Parke and his wife, Agnes Nichols (Rowan County marriage bond dated 5 February 1762, Jacob Nichols and Henry Lively, bondsmen.) (18). It is not known if there is any relationship between Agnes Nichols and William Nichols, son-in-law of Stephen and Sarah Pettypool. 1785 May 5 Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, William Cole, Esq apptd guardian of John Park, Mary Park [married 1787 Robert McKee], Agness Park, Joshua Park, Huldy Park, & Jacob Nichols Park, orphans of George Park dec'd & gave £400 bond with James McCay [McKee] security.

I had someone look up the 1830 and 1840 census. It showed in the 1830 census for Davidson Co. NC. John Wilson (age would be 34) 110001 and 1 female age 20-30, Elizabeth`s (age would be 29), The only child I have listed born before 1830 was Lydia, she was born 1828 so would probably be the child listed in the under 5 age group. It looks as if there is a child in the 5 to 10 group. So there could very well have been a child born before Lydia. All the others that I have were born after 1830. The 1840 census for Davidson Co. NC shows John Wilson Sr. (age would have been 44) 1101001---102101. I will check the other childrens years of birth and see how they match up. I have the names of the people living near them in both 1830 and 1940 if this would help any let me know. Elizabeth`s (age would have been 39).
