Portsmouth Nov 5, 1945 By John R Rutter Rt 3 Portsmouth, VA Mrs Branch, I have old deeds, records and wills which date back to 1721. Among them, one to John Rutter and Martha, his wife in 1759 purchased 200 acres of land on the deep creek granted by King George of England and the Colonies. Another is a deed of sale of a colored man to Thomas - Jeremiah - Mary - Cherry - Jeremiah (crossed out in pencil John) Rutter sold by Wm Herbert in 1799. In the Rutter grave yard which I own, a stone says Jeremiah Rutter Died 1828 age 71 (born in 1757). In cedar grove cemetary John Rutter born 1768 and Sophia grave stones says John died 1845 age 77 his wife Sophia died 1849 (born 184) age 80 years. Their family William died 1845, Martha married Colonel James Benford, Mary Ann and 1 married Dr. Garlick. My father Salathiel Rutter known as Bob knew the Benfords. I have heard him speak of them more than once. He died 40 years this month, Nov. (1905). Mrs Jennette Cullpepper who lived near here died in 1902 age 70 years says she has heard Jeremiah Rutter preach w! hen she was young. She was well acquainted with the Rutter family.
