A good account of the Legend of Betsy Dowdy can be found in Volume 4 of the Pasquotank Historical Society Year Book. Like most legends, there is probably some factual basis to the account. As a Dowdy descendant, I like to believe it is true. Betsy was believed to be the daughter of Joseph Dowdy (O'Dowdd/O'Dowdee/O'Dowdy). Joseph lived on "the banks" opposite Knotts Island.
