Back then the family was responsible for the cost of moving a grave. There were obviously people who couldn't afford to have them moved and thus the headstones (if any) were knocked down and the new road went over them. Every time we drove down that road my Mother said she got a chill because we were riding over the grave of her baby brother. Her Mother (Nora Eleanor Crank Guard) had been buried beside the baby but her grave was moved and the baby was not. My grandfather (T.M. Guard) had remarried and his new wife thought it was a waste of money to move the graves. He went ahead and moved his deceased wife's grave but not his baby son. My grandfather is now buried beside his first wife (my grandmother) in the Powells Point Baptist Church Cemetery. My Mother was with her father the day the graves were moved and according to my Mother many were not moved. I have often wondered if the Church or county kept any record of the graves that were destroyed. I have inquired with the church but have never been able to find out anything.
