Hatteras island has been part of Currituck, Hyde and Dare Counties. If you descend from this family, please contact me. On the mainland, there is a William Best in 1779. The first Best found on Hatteras Island is Ezekiel who was an orphan of Thomas Best and was apprenticed in the court notes of 1815-1821 to Abraham Farrow of Avon. By 1830, Ezekiel is living there in his own household. His wife was Rebecca, last name unknown. He died sometime after 1860 and had sons Daniel and Eldridge and daughters, Clarissa, Chlo, Angeline, Eldridge, Mary and Elizabeth. I can't give you a copy of the Miller book as it was provided to me for my use only. However, the History Center in Manteo has a copy I believe and you can call them to facilitate obtaining a copy. However, I am entering the info in my gedcom program and if you want me to do a lookup of someone, I'd be glad to. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Given how difficult it was for me to get a copy from the family, I'm very hesitant to share without their permission even though it has been contributed to the library in Manteo. My cousin married the grandson of Sigsbee Miller of Avon. THe Miller fam has been told over the yrs that they are descendents of ship wreck survivors and we were told at the Williamston symposium that the first Miller m. an Indian Princess. Thanks for the info. I will attempt to get a copy for The Miller Fam who live here in the Elizabeth City area.
