    1. Re: [NCCURRIT] Cemeteries along hwys 158 & 168
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JeanOSchroeder Surnames: Guard, Crank Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.currituck/1425.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You are probably asking about a recent widening but back around 1915 ( or -) the course of the road (what is now US 158) changed and ran through the cemetery at Powells Point Baptist Church. Back then the family was responsible for the cost of moving a grave. There were obviously people who couldn't afford to have them moved and thus the headstones (if any) were knocked down and the new road went over them. Every time we drove down that road my Mother said she got a chill because we were riding over the grave of her baby brother. Her Mother (Nora Eleanor Crank Guard) had been buried beside the baby but her grave was moved and the baby was not. My grandfather (T.M. Guard) had remarried and his new wife thought it was a waste of money to move the graves. He went ahead and moved his deceased wife's grave but not his baby son. My grandfather is now buried beside his first wife (my grandmother) in the Powells Point Baptist Church Cemetery. My Mother was with her father the day the graves were moved and according to my Mother many were not moved. I have often wondered if the Church or county kept any record of the graves that were destroyed. I have inquired with the church but have never been able to find out anything. I am trying to find info on the people! What I have fond so far is: 1) There were 3 William Etheridges in the 1810 Currituck Co. census (which one might be the right one?) Have not been able to find the others in early 1800's censuses. 2) There is a 1806 Will of John Bell who, among other items, left land on Bell's Island and Gibbs Woods to a son named Hillary Bell. It mentioned that this Hillary was under-aged in 1806. (???) 3) A deed of land from John M. Roberts and his wife, Dorothy, to a Hillary Bell in 1816, registered in 1822 Currituck Co. Deed Book. 4) A Rev. War widow pension request from one Abiah/Abijah Williams who states her deceased husband was Col. John Williams, who died Nov 7, 1835. (Could they be the parents of Mary Williams Connelly?) 5) A few other tidbits that may or may not connect. Any help on finding out more about the people would be much appreciated. Author: firearrow1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.currituck/1438/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Our history is in danger ! Please sign the online petition to save the Trading Ford NC site at http://www.petitiononline.com/trading/petition.html . The Trading Ford contains Revolutionary and Civil War battlegrounds as well as other history spanning thousands of years . The importance of the Trading Ford NC historic site was most recently recognized in Report to Congress on the Historic Preservation of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Sites in the United States in June 2008. Despite this recognition, careless development continues to threaten the site. The latest threat is by the Duke Energy Company, who wants to build a power plant DIRECTLY ATOP the site of Greene's Crossing ! During the "Race to the Dan River Campaign" in 1781, Greene drew Cornwallis into a trap that would be sprung at Yorktown with Cornwallis' surrender. In Feb 1781, Greene and his men eluded almost certain capture and annihilation by Cornwallis by crossing the Yadkin at the Trading Ford in the night while Cornwallis slept. After the crossing, the river rose , preventing the British from crossing . If not for Greene's Crossing, there would have been no Battle of Guilford Courthouse and probably no surrender at Yorktown. We might all be paying taxes to the Crown ! This is an issue for ALL Americans, not just North Carolinians. Please sign the petition first, and if you'd like to further participate in an email campaign, then go to http://www.carolina-patriot.com/tradingford.html where email and web addresses have been organized . And aif you ever find out what drew so many from Currituck to Rowan please please let me know at pungo@cox.net I do know that in 1846 there were two HUGE hurricanes that hit Currituck--so big that salt water fish were in Currituck Sound and when the water receeded the farm land was covered in salt. Between the two hurricanes, just about everything was destroyed. Then I just read that Currituck was infested with maliria and typhoid. 3. I hope this gets to you Dusti---I have Gordon Jones book "Abstracts of Wills and Other Records in Currituck and Dare Co. NC" There is only one Isaac Beasley listed in the index; P 5 TAXABLES IN CURRITUCK 1755 It lists Isaac and John Beasley (2). There are a lot of other Beasleys with different spellings. If I can help let me know.
