Do not forget about Captain John Woodhouse. He was leader of the North Carolina Militia from the Currituck area in the 1750s. This is very well documented. My ancestors were under his command. These two books do not constitute any type of proof. Yes, they are copyrighted and published. They are books compiled by researchers like myself who have written family history. I included sources in my articles but a lot of people didn't. I have seen numerous errors in the books. The articles have to be taken with a grain of salt unless their sources are noted. I was hopping Roy had some real proof. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rlmerrell@roadrunner.com> To: <nccurrit-l@rootsweb.com>; <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>; <nccurrit@rootsweb.com>; "emerrell2: yahoo.com" <emerrell2@yahoo.com> Sent: Thursday, March 12, 2009 9:21 PM Subject: Re: [NCCURRIT] Woodhouse and Poyner families > Dear Mr. Seibel, > > Over the years, two volumes have been published on the families of > Currituck County. Dear Mr. Seibel, Over the years, two volumes have been published on the families of Currituck County. The first volume, "The Heritage of Currituck County, 1670 - 1985", copyright 1985 has a lot of information on the branch of the Poyner family you are interested in. It is contained in article #521 on pages 357 thru 359. In a later collection titled "Histories of Currituck County North Carolina Families" copyright 2005,there is good information on the Woodhouses I believe you're looking for. It's in article 129, Origins of the Woodhouse Family of Currituck County, pages 306 thru 316. The information you have on Enoch Poyner appears accurate. My family has a connection with him though not through blood-lines. Enoch Dailey Poyner married his first wife, Laura Woodhouse 1868. She died in 1872, and they had a son named Nathan in 1869. Enoch's second wife was Sarah Frances Pitts, dsughter of Dr. Virginius Pitts, "physician, educator, and Superintendent of Currituck County Schools". Sara! h Frances was widely known as Miss Fannie Poyner. While she and Enoch were married, they adopted a girl, Paulina Woodhouse. Paulina was my paternal grandmother. My paternal Grandfather, Isaac Holly Merrell, and grandmother, Paulina Woodhouse Merrell, lived with "Grandma Poyner" and farmed the property at the old Poyner estate in Grandy for a number of years. My father, Roy Edward Merrell (one of 10 children), was born in 1915 in the house that was built in the late 18th century. My Grandfather purchased another piece of property in Bertha (now a part of Poplar Branch), and the family moved to the house and property around 1920. Grandma Poyner was the only grandparent my father ever knew. They took care of her until her death in 1927. I hope this has been of some help to you, but the details are in the two books I mentioned with the exception of the adoption of my Grandma Merrell (Paulina Woodhouse), and the history behind her family. Some of the Merrell history is in another section of "The Heritage of Currituck County". These volumes should be in the Currituck County Library. If you need any further help, you can e-mail me or call my cell phone, 252-337-5413. I now live in Elizabeth City. I am copying my elder brother on this. He has more knowledge of family genealogy than I do. v/r Randy Merrell ---- "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: esiarchaeology > Surnames: Woodhouse, Poyner > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.currituck/1442/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am an archaeologist working on a project near Jarvisburg in Currituck County, North Carolina, and I am trying to track down the genealogy (and other information) for the Woodhouse and Poyner familes, specifically the line containing the following family members: > > Thomas Woodhouse (born around 1817) - Husband > Mary or Polly Woodhouse (born around 1814) - Wife > Edmond Woodhouse (born around 1840) - Son > Major or Mager Woodhouse (born around 1844) - Son > Laura Woodhouse (born around 1848) - Daughter > Thomas Woodhouse (born around 1853) - Son > > Thomas may have been the son of Lancelott Woodhouse, who died around 1838 > > Laura appears to have married an Enoch Poyner in the late 1860s or very early 1870s, and Laura died in 1872. He is now 87. At the time those graves were moved or not moved, 1915 -, they were using private individual undertakers. Twifords didnt come into existence until 1933. After looking at Ben Batemans site as suggested in this thread, you might want to check with the Department of Transportation to see if there are any records of graves destroyed in the name of progress. If you get anything that way we would appreciate if you posted it back in this thread. We are still looking at relatives involved with Powell's Point and having a hard time getting any answers. These were researched and posted by Ben Bateman and Judy Brickhouse. http://www.currituckcountync.info/cemeteries/records/rogc.htm If you click on "a", "b", "c", etc. you will see the actual removal certificates.
