I went to Coldsprings Presbyterian Cemetary today and copied down some information from the stones in your grandfathers plot. You may already have this. The headstones are pinkish colored and they are fairly plain. There are 6 graves two are empty. From left to right. #1 a flat headstone in the ground all it says is "Richard John age 2 days" next is your grandfather "Beloved Husband Roland L. Mathias 1911-1966", #3 "Beloved Wife Edith H. Mathias 1911-1972", #4 empty, #5 enpty, #6 "Mother Freda Saner 1881-1964". This plot is right off one of the roadways in the cemetary and about 30 feet away and behind this plot is a six grave plot my mother had bought. Lucian F. Mathias, Lillian V, Davis, nee Mathias and my father and mother are buried there, there are two empty plots. About 200 feet to the right or west is another six grave plot which was bought by my aunt. It contains aunt Zeta (Mathias) Lowry, ! her husband Allen Norvall Lowry, Aunt Elsie (Mathias) Whilhelmsen, Uncle Polly Mathias This is Wallace he went by Polly all his life. The plot right next to where my parents are buried is owned by the Smeltzers. Grady had three children. Gladys married Harold Smeltzer, he died in 2005, Shirley, and Jimmy. Jimmy's given name is James Henry Mathias. So the family is pretty close together at least the dead ones are. Dawn I have a will for Olive Mathias. This is our Olive with son B.F. if you would like a copy of it I can make one for you. I know I was thrilled the first time I saw it. It is very interesting. Our Olive was Olive Morse, daughter of John Morse, and Linner (Eleanor) Bell, She married John A. Mathias and is seen on several census as living with her son Benjamin F.Mathias. My guess is Benjamins middle name was Forrest, no proof just a hunch primarily because Henry Jame's father was Benjamin F. and Henry's first born was Lucian Forrest. Henry's mother was Frances Virginia Doxey Mathias and his first born girl or second born child was Lillian Virginia. Maybe it is something else but I would put my money on Forrest. I have a lot of documents, wills, death certificates, birth certificates, deeds, and other things which I can copy for you. They are in the original handwritting and sometimes hard to read. I have a bunch of pictures, I can make you copies. I have one! of Henry James in his Life Saving Uniform, this is what they called the Coast Guard before it was called the Coast Guard. I have one on a porch in Wildwood NJ with him holding uncle Joe Davis. This was my mothers brother but she wasn't born yet. My grandmother and grandfather Davis are also in the picture. I have several of Nettie Marie a few where she was walking around, and one where she was holding the family pet (a goat), and a few after she had a stroke, she was in a wheelchair. I have a newspaper clipping of Lee Mathias when he was 2 years old and participated in a baby parade in Cape May. He was a cutie. Also, when I croak if your still around I would like you to have Netties wristwatch. It dosen't work anymore but it is platinum. The band says it is a Peggy Lee pat 10/19/26. That's 1926. My mother had told me that all of the kids, (Mathises) put together and gave it to her for her birthday and she was so overwhelmed she cried. Anyway Nettie was your grea! t-grandmother too, I think you should have it. How are things in Alabama. I moved down there for about 6 weeks. Closed up my house and moved down to Greenville which is the home of Forrest Gump and about 40 miles from Montgomery. I got a job in Baptist Hospital which was in Montgomery. Anyway, it was so hot, they had a small drout, all people ever talked about was the last time it rained and what it was going to do to the crops. Nothing but red dirt and clay. I had just bought a brand new 2003 Mitsubishi Spyder convertable cream colored. It was full of red dust and red dirt on the carpet, what a mess. Anyway Alabama was not my cup of tea, so I packed up and went home. I really missed not haveing the ocean nearby and not hearing the seagulls. Even though I am about 3 miles from the ocean and a mile from the Delaware bay the seagulls still fly over the house occassionally. I guess when you hear them all the time you get used to them subconsciously but when you don't hear them anymore you really miss them. I! have never been to Birmingham though maybe it's a lot different. Well I'll sort through pictures and stuff over the next few days and start to get things copied. Talk to you later. A legend is just what it is, a legend. This book is not about legends it is someones work who was making an attempt to serach out his own ancestory. This is not my work. You seem like you are trying to pick everything apart and I am just telling you about a copy of a book. I could sit here all night and write out excerps from this copy but I am not going to copy the whole thing. I told you Alonzo's son wrote this and you gave me the birth and death dates of his parents, and all his previous realatives. Here is what is written about Alonzo and his family. If you are not happy with the following you need to dig up John William Melson and complain. This is his work. William Melson (I) William Melson (II) and wife Sarah Pledger Joseph Melson and wife Elizabeth Midgett William G. Later moved to Jamesville, N.C. in Martin County, and it was there that Ira Lewis Alexander died, Jan. 3, 1951. Clare Melson Alexander later moved to Durham, N.C. Ira Lewis Alexander was superintendent of operation in a lumber industry. His attention to duty, loyalty and ability in any of his laudable undertaking made him a man above reproach, with his company and in the community that he lived. 3. Mae Estell Melson and husband Robert Leslie Pinner, the son of James W. and Iola S. (Olie) Bateman Pinner, were born (this is not my typeo) one on James Fla., the daughter of Richard and Bessie Leonard McKee. She then moved to Durham.N.C. In 1956 she married Carket Urvubg Spencer, son of William Sherman and Emma Liverman Spencer, all of Tyrrell County. 8. Helen Wilkinson Melson and husband, Booker Ira Olive, the son of Cammie Ira Olive and wife, Margaret Dora Olive, of Durham, N.C. to Helen and Booker Olive was born a daughter, Mary Cammie Olive. The family live in Durham, N.C. Foster Basnight was taken in the Alonzo Melson home. His mother having died when he was but a small boy. Foster too attended Uncle William's school. He, "Foster", shose the chores about the house as his duties in the Melson home, and it was there he acquired a talent for cooking. When a man he went to Virginia and cooked for Joe Sexton at a Logging Camp, staying there only a short while, he returned to Tyrrell County and was employed in a newly constructed hotel in Columbia, N.C. Andrew J. and wife, Liallian Cohoon, bought this hotel in 1917. It was in this Cohon Family that Foster lived thereafter. Born 1890, died 1945. Alonzo Melson was in the Merchantile Business having bought his Uncle James DF. Alexander's store in 1903,located at the foot of Pledger Road in Little Alligator Township. Here, he was still engaged in the merchantile business, and was Post Master at Fort Landing, N.C.He also served the community with a combination mill, ginned cotton, ground meal, and sawed lumber. Alonzo Melson, Born October 17, 1874, died February 28, 1948 Mary Justine Pledger Melson, Born December 5, 1870, died January 21, 1939. Well this covers pages 47 through 50. As I typed it I found it does make good reading. He puts a personal touch to everthing. Guess he didn't have to look everthing up in the Court House because these people were his family, siblings and parents. As I said, he only takes his geneology to 1956. All the people you named and gave me dates for are all written down from pages 1 though 46. Happy Reading, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have seen and heard so many legends/tales about shipwrecks and survivors. I believed one my Mother told me, that had been told to her, etc., and then doing my own research, I found out there wasn't a grain of truth to it. I think tales just got twisted over the years and attributed to different families. I doubt that anyone intended to lie. Just so you can check this against your Legend info. Alonzo Melson was b. 17 Oct 1874 & d. 28 Feb 1948. His wife Mary Justine Pledger was b. 3 Dec 1870 & d. 21 Jan 1939. Alonzo's parents were William G. Melson b. 1 Jun 1939 - d. Joseph's parents were William Melson, II b. 1783 - d. bet. 1807 -10 and his wife Sarah Pledger b. 9 Feb 1783 - d. 20 Jan 1833. William Melson, II's parents were William Melson, I b. ca. 1749 in Sussex Co., MD - d. 1799 Peartree Point, Tyrrell Co., NC and his wife Jean Aydlette b. ca. 1752 - d. bef. Nov 1809. I will use your new address in the future. I just wanted to answer your questions now while I am on-line. Reguarding the Melson book, there is no publisher written. I do not have a book, someone sent me a copy of a typewritten book that was 86 pages long. In reading the first few pages I now see that on page 2 in the middle of the page is written. "This Record is based on the family status as of 1956. Compiled by John W. Melson, son of Alonzo Melson and Mary Justine Pledger Melson". Here is how it begins: "Two Legends have been found concerning the Melson Family. In Currituck County one legend is, that an Irish boy came ashore from a ship wrech off the coast of North Carolina, and settled at Powels Point. In Tyrrell County the story is, that and Irish family settled in Tennessee, and the descendents later came to North Carolina". This the first paragraph. In handwritting is written May 30, 1924 DEATHS Henry J. Mathias, aged 50, died yesterday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock at a Norfolk Hospital after a short illness. He was a native of North Carolina, and was stationed at the Virginia Beach coast guard station. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral apartments of L.L. Williams, 3401 Granby street, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. He was a member of Virginia Beach Lodge 274, A. F. and A. M. Members of the order will meet this afternoon at 1 o'clock at Masonic Temple and accompany the body to Forest Lawn Cemetery, where burial will take place with full Masonic rites. From another newspaper H. J. Mathias-Funeral services for Mr. Mathias were conducted at the funeral apartments of L.L. Williams, 3401 Granby street yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. Paul Buckles, pastor of Virginia Beach Presbyterian Church, officiated. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pallbearers were: W.H.Partridge, L.C. Newbern, A.L. Morrisette, W.A. Fulcher, M.A. Moore, W.B. Taylor, and J. E. Jard. Services with full Masonic rites were conducted by Virginia Beach Lodge A. F. and A. M., which attended in a body. Last article I have Funeral services of H. J. Mathias, who died Friday in a Norfolk Hospital after a prolonged illness, were conducted yesterday afternoon from the funeral apartments of L.L. Williams in Norfolk. Rev. Paul Buckles, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiated. Burial was in the Forest Lawn cemetery. Pallbearers were W.H. Partridge, L.C. Newton, A.L. Morrisette, W.A. Fulcher, M.A. Moore, W.B. Taylor, and J.E.Jard. Services with full Masonic rites were conducted by the Virginia Beach Lodge, A. F. and A. M., which attended in a body. Mr. Mathias was a United States Coast Guard member living on 24th street. He has a wife and seven children. The last statement is in err. He had eight living children at the time. Grady did not drown untill about 1946. Grady was never found. He was aboard a boat called the Sea Toy. The boat was found floating on the Delaware side of the Bay. The two men were missing. It was thought that one man fell overboard and Grady jumped over to help him as they found Grady's hipboots and rain gear on the deck. It occured in the winter months and it was said that both men would have froze to death almost immediately. I have a few newspaper articles on the search for the Sea Toy I will give you the information soon, if you would be interested. Also, reguarding Grady, there is a monument in Cape May with all the names and dates of all the lost fisherman for Cape May County. It is beautiful and depicts a young woman, with two or three children at her feet looking out to sea. If you ever get to Cape May you should look for it. It's within a mile of the Coast Guard Base. I have never seen the book you have referred to. Are they corprighted? Who was the publisher? Yes, I would love to have a copy. You can contact me directly at jfstms (at) bellsouth.net - naturally change the (at) to @ without spaces. Our Melson's came from the Eastern Shore. There was no shipwreck of which I am aware. All the Melson's in Currituck and Tyrrell appear to descend from William Melson and his wife Jean Aydelett. They were married 2 Feb 1770, Lewes & Coalspring Presbyterian Church, Lewes, Delaware. In 1772, Book 2, page 454 Currituck Co., William Melson bought land on Powells Point from Daniel Lindsey and his wife, Sarah. Thus William was of age and born prior to 1751. Book 12, page 656, 657 and 664 Tyrrell Co. and deeds recorded in Currituck Co. The division of his land by his heirs in 1804 gives a life span of approximately 60 years. In 1788 Book 10, pg 327 Tyrrell: William Melson came to Tyrrell Co and bought land from William and Ann Aydlett, a plantation on Peartree Point in Little Alligator section of Tyrrell Co. Formerly owned by Richard Sanderson. He took son William Jr. and dau Elizabeth to Tyrrell and left sons John Aydlett and James and dau Polly Melson in Currituck Co. William descends from John Melson and his wife Elizabeth Painter. He and Elizabeth were apparently transported to Accomack Co., VA about 1665 by a planter, John Renney. They were later taken (again by John Renny) to Somerset Co., MD. Renny received his 50 acre headright (each) for their transportation. John Melson and Elizabeth Painter filed their banns with the Somerset Co. Court on 9 Jan 1671/72. They were married at the Rehoboth Plantation, south of Pocomoke City, MD, 4 Apr 1672 by Robert Maddox. They later returned to Accomack Co., VA where they settled on Hunting Creek. They remained there the rest of their lives. Jean Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I didn't know she was still on-line. I just dropped her a message reguarding ordering book B. I also asked if the second Heritage book for Currituck was completed. I have the first book and I know when I went off-line a few years ago they were working on another book. Thanks for giving me her new e-mail. The e-mail I had for her was old and has been changed since. Speaking of books, I have a copy of a geneology on the Melsons. It is entitles MELSON taken from First - Melson Family Legends Second - Melson Legal Documents Third - Melson Family Records There is no author written on the copy that I have. It begins by telling of a ship wreck off NC with the Melsons ending up in Tyrrell Co. Also, of other legends in the Tennessee area etc. It is a pretty through geneology of the generations of Melsons. If you don't have it, I can check some Melson facts for you, or I can make a copy and send it to you by snai! l mail. My guess is that you probably already have a copy. Thanks again for letting me know about "B" book. Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you are interested contact Lois Meekins at ljmeekins@inteliport.com Considering that most of our ancestors could not read or write and they had to depend on court clerks and census takers, you are going to find a lot of misspelled words and names. It was quite common to spell things the way they sounded. I only have connections to the Mathias family through collateral lines. I do have a direct connection to the Melson's. My great great grandmother was Polly Melson. She was the first wife of Hodges B. Gallop. She was born 23 Apr 1804 and died 18 Feb 1854. Feel free to contact me directly if I can help you. Who are you researching? Do you have any Melsons or Mathiases? I have the Currituck marriage book A but I have never seen book B before. Apparently there are some errors in translating or whoever wrote the names on documents were using their inturpratation of a spelling. I have a copy of Henry Jameses original marriage license and there are errors on that too. For example, Henry James must have told them that his name was James Mathias for it is written as such with a very small "Henry" above the largely witten James as if it were an afterthought. In John Doxey's will probabated in 1884 Henry James is called Doxey's grandson- James Mathias. On the bottom of the marriage license he is called Henry J. Mathias. His wife is listed as Nattie M. Caroon on the top and listed the same way on the bottom. Henry's partents listed as B.F. Mathias and Jennie Mathias. This was really Benjamin F. Mathias and Frances Virginia Doxey Mathias. Frances ! went by her middle name Virginia which was shortened to Jennie. I guess this is a version of Ginny. Nettie's or Nattie's parents are listed as Joseph Melson and Louvinia Melson both dead at the time of the marriage. I have noticed there is a common naming patern in my family. For example... Frances Virginia Doxey- gggrandmother Nettie Marie Melson- ggrandmother Lillian Virginia Mathias etc. grandmother Marjorie Marie etc. - mother Linda Virginia etc. - myself It seems like every other generation gives their daughter the middle name of their grandmother. I thought I had looked at a microfiesh film of the 1900 census, but apparently not. You informed me of things I had never seen. For example my grandmother was only 3 months old when that census was taken. I know that Sydney Caroon died young but apparently she made it to at least age 10. My great aunt Annie Caroon (half sister to my grandmother) was the one who told me about her two sisters and that they had died young. Annie herself died at either 99 ir100 years of age. She was an excellent seamstress who could actually make winter coats and she taught ceremics in her basement. I still have some of the things she made and had given to my mother. I never knew that Sydney was in Henry Jameses family unit. I think Annie was raised by her father, but I am not sure. I know that she was not a part of the Mathias family growing up. Thanks again for you information. If there is anything I can help you with I would be more than willing to work with you. Sincerely, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am signed up with Ancestry so my email address changes on all my posts if I change my address. In the Currituck Co. Marriage Book B, her name is listed as Nettie L. Melson daughter of Joseph and Levina Melson when she married Joseph G. Caroon on 26 Sep 1888 in Poplar Branch Township. Then as Mattie M. Caroon when she married Henry James Mathias on 8 Feb 1898. Her parents are listed as Joseph and Louvenia Melson. I have the same eight children listed for Henry James and Nettie that you do but I did not have her children by Joseph Caroon.
