    1. Re: [NCCURRIT] Harold Pattey Dinsmore - October 1944 searching for newspaper articles of death
    2. Doesn't "homicide" simply mean that the actions of one person resulted in another person's death?? It doesn't mean "murder", or "intentional killing". It just means someone else fired the shotgun that killed Mr. Dinsmore.? Probably an accident that happened more frequently than was reported. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: nccurrit-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, Aug 30, 2009 8:37 pm Subject: [NCCURRIT] Harold Pattey Dinsmore - October 1944 searching for newspaper articles of death This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: shaslam100 Surnames: Dinsmore Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.currituck/1451/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for any newspaper articles regarding the death of Harold Pattey Dinsmore dated approximately October 22, 1944. According to his death certificate, Harold died in Crawford Township, Coinjock City of a shotgun discharge which was ruled a "homicide". This sounds very strange to me so I would like to try to see what other information might be available concerning the death. Does anyone know what newspaper might have carried the story at the time and/or what local library might have microfilm of those newspapers today? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you. 3. Regarding Harold Dinsmore request I have no information about Mr. Dinsmore's death other than what you already have. Newspapers would include the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City, NC (don't know if it was operating in 1944) and the Dare County Times of Manteo, NC. I am assuming the D C Times is what is now known as the Coastland Times in Manteo. Another newspaper that could have carried that story would be the Virginian Pilot in Norfolk, VA. Hope this helps. Would Mr. Dinsmore have been a hunter sportsman? Many men came to the area to hunt ducks and geese. M. Hurst

    1. Re: [NCCURRIT] Timothy Gilbert
    2. Jeff & Kathy Stevenson
    3. I have Timothy Bateman Gilbert the son of Benjamin Gilbert and Nancy Bateman. His older half-sister, Marcella Gilbert married Joseph Scott and they bought property in Moyock ca 1857 after moving from Perquimans Co to Norfolk County. Marcella's brother Jefferson Gilbert also lived in Moyock before moving on to Lower Norfolk so there were relative he could have been living with. Benjamin Gilbert 2nd marriage was to Nancy Bateman and they only had the one child. The interesting thing is Jefferson Gilbert (Benjamin Gilbert) married Lavenia Bateman who is Nancy's sister. I could never locate Timothy on the 1850 but his half brother, George Washington Gilbert, was living with his brother Jefferson. I believe Nancy must have died before 1850 and he was living with a relative, maybe even Jefferson. I have quite a bit of information on the Gilberts as Marcella was my great-great grandmother. My original information came from my family, Margaret Cooper, daughter of John Cooper and Esther Fletcher is my 3rd Great-Grandmother by her marriage to Samuel Walker West. My maternal grandmother was a Bentley/West. This information was back up from information in the book: Our Heritage as it Glows from the West, by Mary West Riggs and Roy A. West. Page 8 of Our Heritage states that Margaret wrote: "Esther Fletcher (my mother) was the daughter of Robert Fletcher, and Lydia, of Currutuck County, Virginia. Robert Fletcher's father and mother were from England. His mother's name was Margaret, and she was called a wise woman." "Esther Fletcher was brought up by her grandmother. She was left an orphan when very young. Early in her life her grandmother and principal friend died. She moved to Halifax, North Carolina, where she married John Cooper. They soon moved to Tennessee to take over the claim of land, 1,000 acres, which fell to Esther by heirship, from her Uncle William's estate. It was given to her uncle by the United States Government for valiant and faithful service in the Revolutionary War. When Esther came to her estate, she found it improved by a man who claimed it under the Squatters Right, therefore a law suit came on. She was about to lose her claim when it flashed through her mind that she had seen a clause in a law book that would save her. She ran up in the garret, got the book, found the point, and showed it to her lawyer. Because of this, she gained her rights." I then went to the LDS Family History Center and that is where I found, what I felt at the time was good information, that someone had submitted that Lydia's last name was Williams. This was about 1990. Then came the problem - the information that I had showed that Samuel Walker West was the son of John West and Sarah Walker. That John West was the son of: Isaac West and Susanna/Mary Anderson, Isaac was the son of: William West and Sarah Cropper, William was the son of: John West and Sarah Pearson, John was the son of: Thomas West and Ann Gilpin, son of: William West and Elizabeth In Oct 2008 I discovered that from William West and Sarah Cropper, back, that the research and information provided to the church was wrong for Isaac's line, not the first time that I found this. This is base on the book: Our Kindred, The McFarlan and Stern Families, Chester County, Pa., And New Castle County, Del, In Two Parts. First Part, The McFarlan and Heald Chronicle, Ancestral and Genealogical. Second Part, The Stern and West Record, Ancestry and Genealogy. By Cyrus Stern. Edited By Lizzie M. Marshall. Introduction By Jacob Taggart Stern. 1885.(Found at http://books.google.com/books?id=FzI3AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA81&dq=de la Warr Chester County Pennsylvania&lr=&ei=uzbhSI-ZKoz6jgHsmLCiCw#PPA81,M1) as well as emails between me and Lisa West Savage as well as Dennis West at Kentucky U, West DNA project, http://web.utk.edu/~corn/westdna/ I was provided a link in an email from Lisa West Savage to Isaac West and Susanna/Mary Anderson (have never seen her called Mary) that shows John is the son of them and that he is the father of Samuel Walker. That site (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hrndr&id=I664) list Deeds in Dickson Co. & Court Minutes that were used extensively. (the book also references Dickson Co. TN) This site states that Isaac's parents are a John West and Mary Madden, but there is no link to John West. There is a link to Mary Madden. There is a statement that reads: "I accept Blodwen West Boyle's research who places Isaac the son of John and Mary Madden because there are two grandchildren who are named Madden: Isaac West Jr. & Hannah Russell had son named Madden b. in 1811 & Anderson West & Celia Tubbs had a son named Absolom Madden West. This is convincing proof to Lilia Smith Seegmiller." I am in the process of finding and reviewing the book: "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy", but the only volume I found was Vol. IV, for Ohio. I also found out that I need Vol. I for NC and includes TN, SC and part of VA. I might also need Vol. II for PA and NJ. For now, based on the fact that I no longer feel that there is a link between Isaac and William West and Sarah Cropper, I have deleted the link between them, but have left William West and Sarah Cropper lines in the database as our line still could feed back into this line. It could also feed into the line of Thomas West, 3rd (or 12th) Baron De La Warr (July 9, 1577 - June 7, 1618); but at what point in time???? I have entered information on what I now feel is Isaac's true parents, John West and Mary Madden. So in the long run I am not sure that Williams is Lydia last name. I am thinking that someone mistook her uncle's first name for a last name. I have just recently uploaded my family tree onto Ancestry.com. I just took a look at Lidia record and noticed that 10 different people are working on her line that have posted information, all have Williams as her last name. I will have to take the time and contact them to see what they have for proof. my email is: dcraw1 @ tampabay.rr.com (delete spaces) Thanks for any help on this line.
