Hi Roberta and others, My name is Donna Flora O'Malley. I've been a lurker on this list for many years. I am very interested in the Lost Colony and Hatteras Island projects. One of the Lost Colonists was Charles FLORRIE. ( http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncflora/ ) There were numerous FLOWER/FLORES/FLOURE/FLURRY in the Jamestown/Tidewater VA area in the 1600's. There is some speculation that these (and other inhabitants of Jamestown/Tidewater) were descendants of the Lost Colonists looking for their relatives. These inhabitants most likely ended up in the Currituck County. I have documented roots in Currituck County as early as 1738 through Lazarus FLOWER. I have a weak link in this ancestry in 1850, but I am 90% confident that the link is correct. ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florey/lazarus.html ) I have been trying to connect Lazarus FLOWER to his ancestors for years with no luck. If anyone can help me shed some light on this part of my history, I would love the assistance. I would also love to help where I can with the Lost Colony/Hatteras project. Donna

I can't give you a copy of the Miller book as it was provided to me for my use only. However, the History Center in Manteo has a copy I believe and you can call them to facilitate obtaining a copy. However, I am entering the info in my gedcom program and if you want me to do a lookup of someone, I'd be glad to. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Given how difficult it was for me to get a copy from the family, I'm very hesitant to share without their permission even though it has been contributed to the library in Manteo. Today, on the Dare County list, someone asked some questions about how the genealogy info will be used. I am glad to answer this, and I'm posting here because others may have questions as well. Here is their question: Roberta, canyou tell us how this "Lost Colony" surname data you're asking for is going to be used?? Are there any privacy concerns for those contributing family history information to?Fred Willard's data base??(or is this some other "Lost Colony" project?) ?Are any publications going to be issued using contributed genealogies?that will be sold? Will people be solicted for DNA samples or data? These questions aren't meant in any accusatory spirit, but simply in the interest of full disclosure.? There are all kinds of problems that can arise from sharing family history information without knowing how the information is going to be used or disseminated. My answer to the above question: I'm glad to discuss this, and thank you for asking. First, neither I nor anyone in this project is associated with Fred Willard or his group. Let me say this again, I am NOT in any way associated with Fred Willard and I can assure you, any information I have will NEVER be shared with him or anyone associated with him. I learned about Fred the hard way. This group, the Lost Colony Research Group, and our associated DNA projects were established in 2007 as a DNA and genealogy research project but has since expanded to include archaeology. You can see our website at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/ On our website, we have over 2000 pages of contributed data, but the family histories that have been submitted there were submitted with the specific purpose of being posted on the website. I am not soliciting this info for the website, but as part of the Hatteras Families project. I do sometimes write articles. (I am not paid for these - they are just part of the project.) You can see our newsletters at this link (scroll down when you get there). http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/nl/anl-index.htm The last couple of newsletters tell about the Hatteras Island project. The most recent newsletter also shows photos of our most recent archaeology dig where we have partnered with the University of Bristol. We have another dig scheduled this fall sometimes, but the dates aren't firm yet. We are obviously working with North Carolina's state archaeologist as well and another University in NC also, but not as extensively as the University of Bristol. You can see who is involved with our project at this link: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/bio/bioindex.htm Publications are here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/pubs/pubsindex.htm I currently have three rather comprehensive genealogical documents from Hatteras Island. I have Beatrice McArthur's works, Hubert Price's works and another book fondly called "the Miller Book". These were put together years ago and are very good, but the folks often did not have access to the early census and extracted records we do today. I have extracted all of the early land grants, deeds, wills and tax lists from Currituck County before Hatteras became Hyde for each of these families. Needless to say, this took months. Unfortunately, the Hyde records are more elusive because the timeframe in question hasn't been published and I don't live geographically close. Thankfully one of our grad students does live "relatively close" and he has been a godsend. Here's the working theory. If the colonists survived, we feel strongly that they did so on Hatteras Island. If they survived on Hatteras island, then their DNA will surely be reflected in their descendants who are living today, assuming of course that they survived, which is our working hypothesis. The surnames may or may not match, but still it's easy to tell if a Jones matches a Smith, for instance, who the DNA does actually match, if it doesn't match the surname. I started the Hatteras Yline and mtdna projects to provide a grounds for DNA testing, and yes, in time I'd like to have two people from each surname and I'd also like to find individuals who descend on the maternal line. What am I doing with the historical family information? I'm putting it into my gedcom right now. For example, Kay Lynn sent me what she has on the Best family. The names I've posted are the ones where I've done the work already. I'll post as I complete it with the oldest info, as I've been doing. She had more early info that I didn't have. I'm comparing what I do have with what she sent and will ask questions about discrepancies. So what I've asked for here is info that will help me complete the lines and also to "get the families off the island" historically. If they are found elsewhere before being on Hatteras, then they are unlikely candidates to be Lost Colony descendants. Several families have oral histories that they were "found on Hatteras", so to speak. I am hopeful that if someone is interested enough in the family to be a genealogist that they might already have knowledge of someone who has DNA tested, or someone who would be willing. I am not soliciting people myself other than asking the people who answer my query. Actually, in most cases, I haven't even had to ask, they offered that info. So no, I'm not about to call Aunt Susie, but maybe you know that Aunt Susie would be a good candidate. I should also say that the Hatteras Island Genealogy Society was recently founded by Dawn Taylor and we have partnered with her informal group. Neither of our groups has dues, we are all volunteer, free, etc. Here is Dawn's page about the society on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=245433063719&v=info&ref=search She is currently working on a website. I have no intention of selling this information. I am sharing with Dawn, as she is with me, and I'm also sharing the early extracted data and such with Kay Lynn and anyone who has contacted me with info or an interest in that surname. I am not including, nor do I want info on living people unless they DNA test, then I do need their genealogy, as any surname administrator does. I know better than to share that info. I've been involved with genetic genealogy for 10 years now. Hard to believe we've had this tool that long. I perform genetic analysis for a living. My company website is www.dnaexplain.com, in the interest of full disclosure, but I am in no way making any money from this project. In fact, I've donated hundreds if not thousands over the past few years. It's my passion, some would say my obsession. Most of the people involved have no idea that I do this for a living and I have NEVER used this or any of my projects to solicit business. My personal interest is in Native and mixed racial heritage. I am triracial myself (European, African, Native). Here is a link to my most recent academic publication dealing with this topic - and it's very relevant to this topic at hand - what happened to the Indians and the Lost Colonists, both. http://www.jogg.info/52/index.html Mine is the review article, "Where Have all the Indians Gone? Eastern Seaboard Dispersal, Genealogy and DNA in Relation to Sir Walter Raleigh's Lost Colony of Roanoke". It's very lengthy and if you read it, be sure to read the supplemental files as well. I have another professional article scheduled for publication later this summer as well dealing with tri-racial DNA analysis. As a final comment, I will also say that we are in the planning stages for a seminar this fall on Hatteras Island. If it comes together the way we want, it will be something like this. Day 1 - Hatteras Genealogy Day - free - sponsored by our group and of course by the Hatteras Island Genealogy Society Day 2 - Lost Colony Symposium with speakers - not free - but funds will be used for DNA testing for Hatteras Island project Day 3 - A limited number of "spaces" available to participate in the archaeology dig - not free - fundraiser for Hatteras DNA testing Day 4 - Museum Tour, local guided tour focused on historic locations, etc. (this could be a day 3 alternative for those not involved in archaeology dig) - not free but cost is only that of the tour operator, etc. I will cross post this to the Currituck and Hyde lists. If you have any more questions, I'd be glad to answer them. Roberta Estes

Hatteras was part of Currituck, Hyde and Dare Counties. If you descend from a Hooper family from this area, please contact me. Here's some info about the earliest families found there. In a 1993 obituary of Carson Hooper, a descendant of Ezekiel Hooper, it says that he is a descendant of William Hooper who signed the Declaration of Independence. While this sounds like a tall tale, it is certainly a possibility. The first Hooper found in Curratuck County was indeed Ezekiel who was found in 1779 on the list of tithables indicating he would have been born before 1760. Hubert Price found in the Virginia Magazine Vol IV pages 316-318 on records in the NC state archives that, "Around 1635 is the first Hooper in our part of the country. Charles Hooper at Charles City County, Virginia, later called Prince George County, just East of Petersburg." This record also says Edmund Scarborough was in Accomac County (Virginia) on Maggetie (handwriting difficult to read) (Midgett) Bay in 1635 (on the Eastern shore). Several records show the migration of various Hooper men into the North Carolina area. By the 1790 census, there were 3 Hooper men in North Carolina. . Ezekiel Hooper, page 20, in Currituck County, at present Avon. . George Hooper page 193 in New Hanover County . William Hooper, wife Ann, New Hanover County. He signed Declaration of Independence and in 1770 lived at Masonboro Sound. Was a native of Boston and a graduate of Harvard. Indeed further research could well uncover a link between Ezekiel and William Hooper. Ezekiel died in Currituck County between 1827/1828 and left several sons and daughters by two wives. His first wife is unknown. He married Comfort Williams about 1805. His children were Cyrus, Rowan, Davis, Ezekiel, W.W. (probably William), Jeremiah and 2 sons who were unnamed, daughter Christian (who married a Gray) and another daughter unnamed. I know they were married in 1884 in Camden County, NC both were 24 years old. Missouri also had a child Grandy Burgess. I have them selling land and timber in 1884 in Camden County. 1890 census records were burn, so I can't pick them up there. I don't find the 1900 Currituck, Camden or Elizabeth City census. I do know that when Missour married Thomas she had at least 2 other children. Ernest Parker he lived in Powell's Point, NC and Mamie Lamm (must be a married name) she was of Norfolk Va. I can't remember how I found these other 2 children and where they lived. Grandy Burgess was my greatgrand father. I can Pick him back up in 1910 back in Camden County. He's 30 years old and he is living in a home as a Boarder. I can't trace him from 1884-1910. I think she married a (?)Ernest Parker. My grandfather had a half brother Ernest Parker(Jr?) from Powells Point. And a half sister Mimie Lamm. I am assuming Lamm is her married name she lived in Norfolk Va. My great-grandfather was Grandy Burgess he was also living with Dempsey Burgess at the age of 1 in the 1880 census. Missouri and Grandy are listed as Dempsey's neice and nephew. I think Missouri was Grandy's mother. Anyone know anything about this family? Long story short, we had a Cannon in our family. A man that we share DNA with is a Cannon from Tennessee. His roots he can trace to 1792, JOhn Cannon from NC/TN. I can only get as far as my 4 ggrandfather, Robert Gibbs, b.1818 (claims Washington County, PA)-d.1896 (Sebewa, MI). He married Mariam Ames Jan 1, 1840 in Holmes County, OH. They didn't seem to live near any of their relatives. I feel like he ran away from his family. Don't know if we share a connection, but saw you had Gibbs and Cannon in one sentence and had to email you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hatteras Island is the location where the Lost Colonists indicated that they went, to join their friends, the Croatoan Indians. . Hatteras Island has a long history of shipwrecks, with many families carrying the oral history that they descend from shipwreck victims. . Hatteras Island has an equally long oral history that many of the current residents descend from the original residents, the Croatoan (later the Hatteras) Indians. . Early records confirm his history in various ways. For example, by 1710, the Farrows, O'Neals, Hoopers and Wahabs were reported to be "half Indian and half English". . The isolated geography of Hatteras Island served to discourage a lot of movement to the island after the initial land grants were awarded and free/cheap land was no longer available. . The isolated geography prevented or discouraged intermarriage with people not island residents, creating a rather closed community, allowing us the unique opportunity to reconstruct the original island residents from their descendants today. I have compiled a list of early island surnames from deeds, wills, tax lists, militia and other documents. These surnames represent the early island residents up through about 1800. We would like to be able to reconstruct the ethnicity of the earliest island families, especially the wives whose surnames have been lost to time. Using DNA, we will be able to reconstruct those families and help people who cannot identify their ancestors' families to reconnect. Author: MIDGETT Surnames: Brumsey, White Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.currituck/1469/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi folks, As hostess of the Currituck Co. website I have been privileged to receive over the years many submissions from various researchers across the country. This past week I received a large box of items from the attorney who handled Paul White Brumsey's estate in Long Beach, California. Paul was the s/o James Brumsey (1864-1953) and his 2nd wife, Ruth Virginia White (1892-1959). Paul had a brother named James C. Brumsey Jr. (1916-1932) and a sister named Sibyl Russell Brumsey (1919-1979) who apparently never married. With the exception of Paul, all of them are buried in the John Thomas Hampton Cemetery in Waterlily. Some of Paul's White ancestors that are mentioned in this collection are: 1) J.B. (Jasper Beauregard) White who married Sarah Whitehurst 2) Richard B. White who married Sallie Partridge 3) one other name that crops up is Elizabeth Olds Brumsey Kegeblin? (1902-Mar. 14, 1969) Paul graduated from Poplar Branch High School in 1941. He was a veteran of the US Navy and attended Colorado State University, Columbia University in NY and the University of Cincinnati in Ohio where he graduated in 1951 with 2 degrees. He was employed by Boeing & worked in the space program until his retirement. Within this box were school report cards starting about 3rd Grade, pictures that he had colored as a young child, cancelled checks, newspaper clippings, letters, a leaf collection, school projects, and many old photos of what I assume are his ancestors. I will be putting a lot of the pictures on the Currituck website when I get back from vacation. As far as I know, Paul never married or had children so the best I can hope for is perhaps to find a living person that might be interested in his effects. If anyone knows of a living relative to whom this collection might be priceless, please let me know.
