My 3rd great grandfather Zebulon James Hunt served in Company E, 18th Infantry Regiment North Carolina and was imprison in Elmira. What little information I've been able to uncover is that he refused to sign allegiance so there fore remain in prison until the end. Zebulon was capture Aug 27, 1862 and was release in 1864 after the ending of the war. He was born in Cumberland but made he home in Pender Co., NC where he returned until his death on Sep 22, 1897. Based on what reading material I found considering the living conditions "just horrid for everyone!" he was one of the few surviving. I'd be very interested should anyone have any further information.
