Sounds like you have an exciting life! My son is stationed at Ft Hood and loves it out there. Says he has switched his statehood status to Texas. Anyway you only need to get one son tested, all will have the same Y DNA provided they have the same father. The Y DNA is pass father to son then to his son almost unchanged. It does change sometimes but it is so slow that they can determine families for generations from it. During my service (over 23 years) in the military I was exposed to Agent Orange and nuclear material and I wonder sometime if my DNA might have been changed by it. I would like for others in my family to test to see if they are direct matches to me due to that reason. It can be a lot of fun but it can be very frustrating at the same time. Good look in your work and with your DNA journey. Mac, We have several retired military Silver-Haired Legislators...most retired as Col...no Generals but I think we have an Admiral that doesn't talk about it. My husband is a retired Virologist and was with a MASH unit in Korea...we went back 5-6 years ago. Wonderful experience! Have a grandson with a BlackHawk unit...he is maintenance crewman. His Dad is a retired Commander, Navy Air. We have all sorts except submarines. I have a question on DNA...does sample have to come from Son of a Son of the line? My husband is not the Ray line, in fact he is from a well known German family who has only been here since 1848 but has a full written history back to Charlemagne. Proven records, journals etc. because of priests and philosophers in his family, lucky man. My early ancestors were Masons in Isle of Wight about 1640, fortunately they could write which got them tax jobs and juror positions...helps a lot when you can track those records. I'm working on my other NC lines now...Ray and Watts and maybe an Arrington connection. I have male cousins who are descended from my Dads brothers so they may be the key, also a cousin in GA (retired military too) who is Ray line and he might have testing. So many tasks and so little time....Thanks for your info and continued sharing. The sample would have to come from a direct descendent in your Ray line. I think it's great that you husband can trace his ancestry so far back. I can only trace my Ray ancestor to the late 1700's. It seems they didn't really care much about keeping genealogy records once they got here to the US. I'm not really sure if the name was Ray in Scotland. It could have been Darrach or McIlreach or could have been something completely different. Keep searching, maybe if you have one of your Ray relative do the DNA search we'll be connected.
