Hi Betty, Sorry about the delay in replying. I'm not sure if we're connected or not. I'm actually related to two Ray families in NC. One on my gggrandmothers side is from Robeson county NC. Her husband my gggrandfather moved to Cheraw SC in the 1830's or 40's but died soon after and his wife Ann Ray Ray moved back to NC after his death. The only way to check actual connections is through the DNA test but it has to be a Male Ray descendent. The female will not carry the Y chromosome that they use to do the tracing. It is passed male to male to male only in a straight line and is a small portion of the DNA that we all carry. A couple more questions about DNA testing. Can a male be tested for the maternal line DNA? Is there such a test? Does one only carry the DNA of one line? Yes you can be tested for your mothers line. It goes to her mother then her mother, etc. The male has the mothers mitochondrial or mtDNA but does not pass it on to his offspring. The Y DNA however is only passed on from son to son but not to the daughters. Mac, It will be a while before I can get into this a bit more. Had time yesterday afternoon and went to the genealogy library downtown Houston but didn't have a lot of time to delve into new stuff. I am one of those crazy people that aren't happy unless they are involved in about 6 things at once. Okay until they all converge into a quagmire. I am a Texas Silver-Haired Legislator and our State Legislature has only until March 9 to file all Bills. I have two legislations regarding seniors that I personally wrote and several others that come from our Silver-Haired delegates....we must go to Austin and push for them. Senior Day is the Capitol is Feb 13th and the night before the Silver-haired Leg. are having a reception with the Governor, so with the other things it is a busy time. I fit family research here and there as I can. I am a Daughter of the American Revolution through my Mason line, Nash County...and our State Congress is middle of March and I am an alternate to that. My dad was one of 5 brothers and all of them are gone...I have two sons, and assume that they have the correct DNA material for testing??? I will persuade one of them...probably the one who is a Son of Confederate Veterans to cooperate, the other is more interested in other things..."like the living, Mom". I believe that I am researching the Mason line that you mention in these posts. I have a Sion Wilson Mason m. 1816 in Rutherford Co TN to Margaret (Peggy) Baker. Several of his sons were in CSA and one of their pensions mentions his uncle Abner Mason. We believe that this "could" be Sion Wilson Mason's father's name also. We believe that these Mason's were from NC prior to moving to TN, actually Nash Co. is where I have started to look first. My line went over to Madison Co TN from Rutherford Co TN. I know that there are collaterol lines of my Mason's that went to Texas from TN. We seem to be stuck getting back to NC. There are several of us working this line, and I know of at least 1 male Mason researcher. I'd like to share info on all these Mason's.
