I am searching for information on my Great Great Grandfather, Jefferson Augustus Chason (J.A. Chason). He was the Chief of Police in Fayetteville and was killed on duty March 5, 1907. His children were sent to the Oxford Orphan Asylum. I have received information from the orphanage about my Great Grandmother, Ola J. Chason and one of her siblings. I found some information in Census reports Robeson County 1900. I am doing a Family Tree and would appreciate any information you could send me or if you can offer suggestion on finding information. Jefferson Augustus Chason Date of Birth: Sept 7, 1859 Date of Death: March 5, 1907 His wife was Martha J. Yarborough Chason, they had 3 children, Lula, Ola, William. Thank you Cindy Scott cindyjscott@triad.rr.com
Four years ago, I hit a dead end with my great-great-grandfather. His name was Murdoch MCLEAN and he was born around 1793 in Cumberland County, North Carolina, in what is now current-day Harnett County. He married Catherine MCNEILL McLean, 10 January 1825 (have found the North Carolina marriage bond), and had the following children with her: Mary McLean, born ca. 1825; Christian McLean, born ca. 1828; John McLean, born ca. 1830; Flora McLean, born ca. 1834; and Malcom A. McLean, born 13 October 1839 (my great-great grandfather). He then married Margaret DARROCH McLean, 28 November 1842 (have found the North Carolina marriage bond), and had the following children with her: Catharine McLean, born ca. 1844; Margaret McLean, born ca. 1845; Neill McLean, born ca. 1849; Ann McLean, born ca. 1851. The information on Murdoch’s children was acquired through Cumberland and Harnett county census data from the mid-1800s. I had no information on Murdoch’s parents or siblings, but just last week, a cousin of mine discovered in Harnett County what appears to be the grave sites of Murdoch McLean’s parents. They are located on a farm in a secluded wooded area in Lillington near our family’s former homestead. He discovered 10 graves there, but only two had stones. One reads: "Erected by Murdoch and Christian McLean in memory of their mother, Nancy. Died June 1, 1822, age 66." The other has the word "Father" on it, but he couldn't make out anything else on that stone. (BTW, he said he had “chills” when he read the information.) The time frame is appropriate for my Murdoch. From this information, his mother, Nancy, would've been born in 1756 and had Murdoch when she was 36. Christian was the name of Murdoch's second child with his first wife, born around 1828, so the Christian on the headstone I assume is Murdoch's sibling (I understand Christian was usually a girl’s name at that time). If you know of any further information on this line that might help us confirm and expand upon this finding, please let me know. Thank you very much. Mickey McLean Greensboro, N.C. Due to the results of some DNA test results indicating a close relationshp between previously "unconnected" McInnises, I am going to vastly broaden my McInnis research base. These individuals do not know how they connect to one another but all have known ancestors from the NC/SC counties so heavily settled by the Scots during the 18th and 19th centuries. Known counties were Cumberland, Moore, Richmond, Robeson, Bladen in NC and Marion, Marlboro in SC. In the process of trying to find these connections, I might as well see if I can include all McInnises who lived in the area. I cannot find where anyone has done a surname study on McInnis. I am sending out a plea to anyone who has done research which includes the surname McInnis in any of the above counties. I do not want inquiries at this point, what I need is data and documentation. Land deeds, wills, court records, bible records, etc. Anything that anyone is willing to contribute will save me from having to order film ( where it exists ) and will save valuable time. Right now, the major time period to study is from c.1775 up until 1850. Thanks so much, Jackie McInnis Knoxville, TN
Does anyone have the will for Dr. Frederick Hill, I believe he died in Cumberland Co, NC between 1850-1900. Can any help on him and his family. I think he came from around Wilmington area. Thanks, Donna
Museums Lecture Series Celebrates Unusual Search for the Countys Lost History Lumberton, NC March 20, 2005 The Robeson County History Museum will host the second lecture in its Museum Mondays series on Monday, March 28th at 7:00 pm at the Osterneck Auditorium, across from the Robeson County Public Library. The program History Hidden Under the Surface Diving and Digging in Robeson County will be presented by Paul Valenti, an experienced scuba diver and historian. He will discuss his experiences encounter in his search for lost artifacts. He will also focus on his discovery in May 1985 of an Indian canoe dating back to 930 A.D. in the Lumber River. The 16.6 foot canoe made from yellow pine was pulled from the dark river waters near McNeills Bridge. I was actually diving in search of other objects and I really wasnt sure just what it was Lumberton native, Paul Valenti explained when asked how he found the boat. It was wedged up against some trees and other debris, so it wasnt easy to recognize. He decided it was an Indian artifact and marked the area so that he could bring archaeologist back to examine the canoe. The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources confirmed that the canoe was the oldest found in the state, dating hundreds of years before the 1700s Lake Waccamaw canoe that had been the oldest one on record. The canoe has been preserved and is housed at the Native America Resource Center at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Finding treasures in and along the Lumber River is not new to Valenti, who has found ancient shark teeth and fossils of the Miocene geologic epoch. He has come across many old Indian tools with crude points. The Lumber River, both the banks and the river bed, can be a great source for artifacts if you know what to look for and recognize it when you see it according to Valenti. Do not miss this opportunity to learn more about the history of Robeson County that lays hidden. For more information call 910-827-5504 or email me at blake@bbtyner.com.
Is anyone out there researching the Bird/Byrd families of Cumberland County? There was one Joseph Bird in Montgomery County in 1850 who apparently died and his wife and children are shown living in Cumberland County in 1860. Her name was Nancy. Their children's names were: Henry (who survived the Civil War), Francis, Eliza, Holly A., Electa, and Joab M. Phillip Furr

I recently found a listing in the 1907 Fayetteville city directory for Armfield & Greenwood Drug Store, located at 203 Hay Street. Arthur A. Armfield was the co-owner. His sister-in-law was Mamie Armfield, a member of First Presbyterian Church who died in the late 1950's. Does anyone know what happened to Arthur? Lilly
Does anyone know who these families are, in 1819 in Duplin Co. Bryant REGBY, Russell regby, Rebecca Ann Regby, Sarah Ann Regby, Michael Hill and his wife Catherine Hill. They all sold land to Benjamin Best Jr. of Duplin Co. NC, they all moved to Darlington Dist. in SC. by 1819. Benj. Best Sr. and Eli Wendham wee witness to the land sale on 7 June 1819. The land was located South side of Grove Swamp, and run into Buck Branch, containing 230 acres, and one track containing 5 acres on South side of Horse Branch. I'm mainly looking for the Hill and Best lines. Thanks, Donna
I am trying to find any info. on the following people from Cumberland county. Colon L. BLue born1863 died 1928, his wife Mary Katherine Medlin born ca1874 died?, Colon's father John Blue born ca1812, and his wife Catherine Lindsey born ca1835. Colon's siblings were Mary, Flora A., Daniel A., and Maragret (Maggie), and Jane Blue. Earliest census of John and Catherine is 1860, I am assuming they married 1855.
