    2. Sam West
    3. Hi Nina, I have started doing research on the Home Guards and Senior Reserves of the Cape Fear Region. Since he was born as early as 1812 he was probably a member of those companies. I found the Senior Reserve record for my gggg grandfather, which actually gave a physical desciption, and his actual birth date. That was a wonderful find. As to the program, I have a policy of not releasing copies until the night of the program. If you are a member of the Cumberland County Genealogical Society you could probably ask Joyce, the President, to send copies of the handouts to the general membership. As to your Robert, he was not on this list. Best wishes, Sam West Lumberton, Robeson Co NC On 5/14/05, Nina Strahm <hstrahm@earthlink.net> wrote: > Hi Sam; > I live in Indiana, do you think you could mail me a copy of your > program. > I am interested in the Beards, Carvers, Neils. would be happy to pay > costs and > mailing. 1. CUMBERLAND COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING
    2. Sam West
    3. Dear Cumberland County Genealogical Society Members: After calling Joyce Adams to make sure I would be going to the correct site Thursday evening, I found out that I was not to be there that night, but rather I was to be with your group this past Tuesday evening. First to everyone, please accept my humble apologies. I did not miss the meeting on purpose. I guess I need to check into Dix Hill for a sabatical, as when I put the Cumberland County meeting down on my appointment calendar, I actually wrote down in my calendar that I would be speaking to your society on Thursday, May 12, 2005. Please - please, except my most humble apologies for this mess up! After talking with Joyce, I have now rescheduled with her to speak to your society on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at 7:00pm at the museum. I have even put it in my Duke system to send me three notices before that meeting so I will get there on the correct day and time. The title of this program is : CUMBERLAND COUNTY SOLDIERS BURIED ON CONFEDERATE HILL. I already have my programs together, with photos of the tombstones of the Cumberland County Confederate Soldiers that were buried on Confederate Hill. I also have my handouts already made and ready for the September meeting. Of those Cumberland County family names that I have identified in my program are: Arnett, Baker, Beard, Brewer, Elmore, Fowler, Guy, Johnson, King, Marsh, McMillen, Page, Parker, Sanford, Strickland, Wade, and also other men who were identified as being connected to Cumberland County. Thanks you all so much, and again please except my apologies for the missed May Meeting. With kindest regards, Sam West Lumberton, NC

    1. Apology
    2. This is to apologize for a e-mail sent last Wednesday to this and other lists sent by my niece but written by me and I never intended it to be sent. Once written, my anger was released and I thought better. However, my niece can go from Lady to the word use for female dog in 4.2 seconds. I did not realize she had sent the message until the next morning. That being say, some good things came form the e-mail. 1. After a discussion with AOL, I now get it for $7.00 less. 2. Many e mails were sent in agreement. 3. The lady who ripped me off has now listed my research as hers on her web site, with the a Mulatto slave as the great grandfather of her husband. She said she did the research herself. 4. She sent to me updated information about her family with birthdays and maiden names of living people. Smart enough to ripped me off, dumb enough to send that information to a total stranger. On the downside after doing genealogical research for thirty-three years and having two articles published in The American Genealogist, I will now quit genealogy. I will leave it to the new breed of Internet Genealogists that have no sense of right or wrong. So no need to unsubscribe me for an apology, I will do that soon myself. Thank You Tonto Bernstein

    2. Evelyn
    3. Thanks to all who emailed me suggestions. It appears I will have to continue using Select, Copy and Pasting to MSWord to make the text wrap to the next line. I was hoping there might be an easier solution, since that is a pain just to read something you don't intend to keep as a permanent download. To those who asked about AOL, I think it used to have a "text wrap" feature under Edit, but it has been some time ago since I used it so I'm not sure. Thanks again to all, and again I apologize for using this forum for a technical problem. Appreciate your patience! Evelyn

    3. Hi List, Can someone give me some tips on re-sizing documents that are too wide for my screen? For instance, the last couple of posts that Myrtle made are wider than my screen and I can't figure out how to get them to wrap or something so that I don't have to arrow over on each line to read the last few words. When I was using AOL this was no problem but now I am on Bellsouth and I can't figure out how to do it. Sorry to use this forum for this type question, but I was hoping someone could help that has the same problem. Thanks in advance, Evelyn

    3. Dear Researchers, The Nevin Ray Letters - A Historical Sketch, 1819-1872 has been contributed by Darryl Black and posted to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccumber/nevinray.html This collection of family letters does not center around any particular individual, but in so far as they reveal, Nevin Ray was the head of the family. He was a surveyor whose post office was Carthage in Moore County, N.C. Some of the earlier letters give his activities as a surveyor, and some are from relatives who had moved to Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. Nevin Ray had at least four children: Hugh, Malcolm, Flora and Christian. Both Hugh and Malcolm served in the Confederate army. At the beginning of the war, Hugh Ray was stationed at Carolina City, three miles west of Morehead City, N.C. For a time, Malcolm Ray was encamped at Wake County, N.C. Evidently Hugh Ray belonged to the 26th N.C. Regiment in Company H. During the Civil War, these MSS. consist of the correspondence of these four children and their cousins. The war letters are rather good, though they are confined to the first two years of the war. Please visit when you can Myrtle Bridges

These individuals do not know how they connect to one another but all have known ancestors from the NC/SC counties so heavily settled by the Scots during the 18th and 19th centuries. Known counties were Cumberland, Moore, Richmond, Robeson, Bladen in NC and Marion, Marlboro in SC. In the process of trying to find these connections, I might as well see if I can include all McInnises who lived in the area. I cannot find where anyone has done a surname study on McInnis. I am sending out a plea to anyone who has done research which includes the surname McInnis in any of the above counties. I do not want inquiries at this point, what I need is data and documentation. Land deeds, wills, court records, bible records, etc. Anything that anyone is willing to contribute will save me from having to order film ( where it exists ) and will save valuable time. Right now, the major time period to study is from c.1775 up until 1850. Thanks so much, Jackie McInnis Knoxville, TN ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers. 3. Jackie: I just signed up and can't even remember how to send a broadcast request. I am at work and read your email. It fascinated me because of what you said about the Scots settling in those counties. I believe it should be Scotch-Irish. I am trying to cross the ocean with my Mahoney ancestors. I have been amazed at the connections with those counties you mentioned. My GG Grandfather James Mahoney was a Methodist Episcopal Church Minister - they called them circuit riders. In trying to get info on him and my GGG Grandmother and GG Grandmother (Frances Mahoney and Helen P. Richardson) my search has involved Marlboro, Bladens, Sumter Counties in SC - and Cumberland and New Hanover Counties in NC! Sorry I cannot help you on McInnis, Regards - Paul Paul B.
