    1. John McQuien / Sarah McMullen
    2. Richard White
    3. John D. McQuien married Sarah McMullen in Cumberland County, NC, on 29 Sep 1814. They were in Sumter County, Georgia, in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. They had three children that I know of. John A. McQuean (sic) married Jane Martin in Sumter County on 2 January 1851. Angus McQuien married Elizabeth Stewart in Sumter County on 26 Oct 1858. My 2-great grandmother Mary McQuien married my 2 great grandfather John English Autry, place unknown, on 11 June 1854. For awhile I thought this was the same John McQueen who married Jennett (McMillian?), but it is now obvious to me that is not the case... that they are distinctly different individuals. If anyone can tell me anything me about John D. McQuien or Sarah McMullen, I'm all ears. John English Autry's mother was Barbara Rebecca McMillan who first married James McMurchy/Murphy in Cumberland County on 18 Aug 1807. He died in Cumberland County in 1815 and Barbara married John Autry, Jr., about 1819, place unknown. Barbara Rebecca Murphy Autry's parents were James McMillan, who was born about 1750 in Kintire, Scotland, and Mary Brown, who was born in Scotland about 1760. One of Barbara Rebecca's sisters, Mary Elizabeth, married Quincy Bass, and they also settled in Sumter County, Georgia. I have a list of other siblings, but no information about any of them. Anyone who can connect up to any of these and/or knows more about them, please get in touch with me. Richard White Tallahassee, Florida

    1. "Wee Bit of Scotland" - Heritage Celebration Event -NC
    2. Here is an article from todays Fayetteville Observer on a Scottish Heritage event here in NC. A booth will be set up to help people trace their Scottish roots. Nancy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Published on: Thursday, Oct 20, 2005 Harnett celebrates Scottish heritage By Amneris Solano Staff writer BUIES CREEK - The campus of Campbell University will come alive with a "Wee Bit of Scotland" this weekend. The university and the Harnett County Sesquicentennial Committee are sponsoring the celebration, which honors the county's Scottish heritage. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the campus in Buies Creek. Activities include demonstrations of Highland games such as the caber toss and the hammer throw, Scottish dancers, clan tents and vendors. A booth will be set up to help people trace their Scottish roots. Jennifer Licko, a noted Celtic singer and dancer, is scheduled to perform as well as the Cross Creek Pipes & Drums. "We're really excited about it," said Al Bain, chairman of the county's sesquicentennial committee. "We want it to be an informative event for the people of this area." Harnett County turned 150 years old in February. The county has been celebrating its anniversary with a variety of events all year. Other activities include a beard-growing contest, guided historic tours across the county and the production of a Paul Green play this fall. At 7 p.m. Saturday, the county has scheduled a Harvest Ball at the Harnett County Courthouse. Tickets are $25 in advance. Guests are encouraged to wear period garb from 1855. The "Wee Bit of Scotland" celebration is taking place alongside Campbell University's homecoming. The Scottish festival is a salute to the area's Highland ancestors who traveled up the Cape Fear River in the mid-1700s to settle in Harnett, Moore and Cumberland counties. At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, "The Kirking of the Tartan," a community worship service, has been scheduled at the university. The service consists of people wearing kilts and holding tartan flags that represent Scottish families. The families will be led into the worship service by a bagpiper. The Rev. Ian Rankine, a Presbyterian minister who is from Scotland, will conduct the service. Staff writer Amneris Solano can be reached at solanoa@fayettevillenc.com or 486-3521.

    1. Mr and Mrs Harm Elkins
    2. Kaththea
    3. Today, I recieved a package from my sister. In it is a letter from her first husband, William "Bill" Elkins, son of Mr and Mrs Harm Elkins of Fayetteville, NC. Mother was married to Bill during the early 1930's and the letter my sister forwarded to me was written in 1932 from Washington, DC. I realize that Mr. Elkins being married to my mother was a hurtful experience. I can tell from the letter that he truly loved my mother and she was extremely tempermental to say the least. Yes, mother was a very trying person and demanding. For that, I apologize to the Elkins family. I would appreciate someone from the Elkins family, who knows the story, contacting me. It may be helpful for me and my sister to understand a bit more about mother and her relationship with people. Kaththea Borland-Mills Kaththea421@worldnet.att.net Arlington, Arizona

    1. Marriages of children of DAVID JOHNSON and MARY STARLING
    2. Jack Baugh
    3. For the first time last week I had an opportunity to visit the Cumberland Co Main Library to do some research on David Johnson and Mary Starling, my gggrandparents (I live in NY). Unfortunately, due to time constraints I had to leave before I was able to copy some marriage licenses of individuals I believe to be the children of David and Mary who were then living in Cedar Creek. David Johnson and Mary Starling's marriage bond is dated 12 Apr 1854. Mary Starling had the following children: (1) Rebeca E. bca 1848 whose father was Amos Nunnery according to a Cumberland County Bastardy Bond dated 9 Mar 1849. In the census of 1870 she is identified as an Idiot and I was unable to find a marriage record for her. There is a listing in the marriage records, however, for Rebecca Johnson and Geo Montgomery both from Cumberland Co dated (Applied 21 Apr 1892/married 23 Apr 1892) which needs to be checked based on the age of this Rebecca. (2) Sarah Jane bca 1854. The marriage index indicates four possible records which might be this child. A Sarah J. Johnson m. Jno K Ezzell (Applied 22 Oct 1870/Married 27 Oct 1870), a Jane Johnson m. David Smith (A. 11 Feb 1871/M. 2 Mar 1871), a Sarah Johnson married Wm A Durden (A. 23 Aug 1871/M. 26 Aug 1871), and Sarah Jane Johnson m. Albert H Pugh (A. 12 Sept 1871/M. 13 Sept 1871). (3) Alexander Johnson bca 1856 m. Hulda Ann Bufort in New Hanover County. I have a record of this marriage. (4) Floyd or Loyd. Both of these names show up in census records, however I could find no listing of a marriage. I suspect, but am not sure that this may be David M. Johnson listed later. (5) Mathew Johnson bca 1859 m. Charlotte Ann Johnson (A. 30 Oct 1880/M. 4 Nov 1880). I have a copy of this marriage record. (6) David M. Johnson bca 1860 m. Elizabeth Johnson (A. 11 May 1882/ M. 11 May 1882). I have a copy of this marriage record. (7) Mary Johnson bca 1861 m. Jonathon Johnson (A. 28 Sept 1882/M. 28 Sept 1882). (8) Martha Johnson bca 1863. I could find no marriage record listed. (9) John D. Johnson bca 1865 possibly m. Elvina (Elma) Averitt (A. 26 Nov 1890/M. 27 Nov 1890). (10) Evander Johnson bca m. first, Kate Strickland (A. 3 Dec 1890/M. 4 Dec 1890) and second, possibly E. J Johnson m. Addis Tew (A 5 May 1906/6 May 1906). I am interested in records related to #s 1, 2,and 7 thru 10 above. Is there someone out there who would be willing to copy the records for me and mail them to me. I will of course pay for the copying, mailing and your time beforehand. If anyone can do this for me I would be very appreciative. Please contact me at jabthird@nycap.rr.com and we can complete the arrangements. Thanks.
