Just a heads-up to everyone--- When sending your email address in an email or even putting it on your own website, you should not type it as you see it in the following example: 234johnxx@aol.com. Spiders, web bots, etc "crawl" the net looking for email addresses to collect and use in scamming and spamming and junk mail. This is not a joke; these little crafty critters are programmed programs that are designed to do just that. So, if you can think of it, type your email (and certainly anyone else's email) thus: 234johnxx at aol dot com You may get less junk mail out of the effort. Happy Turkey, Steve Edgerton
Those original petitions may be in the "State Records of North Carolina", a series of books first done at the turn of the century or slightly before. Petitions are something that seemed to have survived better that anything else in the counties; probably because the State was the receiving agency. The library in the county you are interested may possibly have copies of all the petitions that are on record for that county. It's a little hard to get a reply from the Archives right now, they're doing some moving, maybe you should contact the local history society and/or library for Nash County. Good luck. I did have it but it expired and haven't wanted to take the plunge to renew. I'm not sure it's as reliable as actually going to Fayetteville and looking at the register; not to take anything away from the subscription. Also sometimes I have a harder time reading the results from ancestry than copying the original from the register of deeds office. That is especially true of the WWI draft cards. Results could go either way I suppose. I have been to the Cumberland county Register of Deeds office many times over the years. The procedure now is to look up the birth, death, marriage, etc. record in the index, get the file number, then go to the vault room, get a computer card and then use the computer to print out the record you need. When I was there last April, they required that you hand over your car keys to get the computer card. Keys are returned when you return the card and pay for copies printed. Joseph James wrote his will and died in Duplin County, 1781. Joseph had a younger brother named Charles James that was in Duplin in 1790 and a son, Elias, who was in Duplin early 1780's. Who did Joseph JAMES marry? Who were his parents? Who were the children of Elias? Thanks.
