Anyone going to the National cemetery in Elmira are in for an experience. The Confederate are on one side and the Union on another. One has pointed tops, the other rounded tops. We have been at the site for Bordeaux & Kemp. Elmira Prison was known as "Hellmira" -- It and the one at Fort Douglas in IL were equal to Andersonville in the South. Neither side were innocent of inhumane treatment of their prisoners. Will, you are my cousin and I never even knew you existed! William Joseph Woodward, brother of your James McKethan Woodward, was my gr-grandfather. Both were children of Andrew Jackson Woodward and Clara Clarissa Mitchell. AJ was originally from Holly Springs near Raleigh - the area called Middle Creek. His parents were Joseph Woodward and Delia Jones both of Middle Creek. Clara was the daughter of William Mitchell and a Miss (unknown) McKeithan of Brunswick Co. I have a wealth of info I can share with you, much of it on the web so you can access it easily. It will take you back generations on both sides and is well documented with original records. His name is James McKethan Woodward on his tombstone, but his grandmother's family actually spelled the name McKeithan. There was family of McKethans in Fayetteville who were close to the Woodwards - probably distant cousins. I would imagine the family did not know about the other spelling when they had his stone made up. The reason I'm so surprised is because I never had any idea that James had married or left any descendants. He died 1/8/1892 in Fayetteville and is buried in Cross Creek Cem with his parents and several siblings. DOB 10/12/1852. Please email me at fharper@triad.rr.com. We have a LOT of catching up to do! For McNeill, McMillan and Currie researchers: From Passports of Southeastern Pioneers 1770-1823 by Dorothy Williams Potter (Library of Congress Catalogue card # 89-81678): "Executive Department Monday 29th October 1804 On the recommendation of Turguel McNeill and Angus McMillan inhabitants of Washington County ORDERED That a Pass port thro the Creek nation be prepared for Malcom Curry a citizen of North Carolina which was presented and signed" I highly recommend this book to researchers of ancestors who headed west.
Florah Ann GILLIS b. abt 1822 married Daniel LESLIE. Daniel LESLIE's will was dated July 18, 1859. He mentions his wife, Florah Ann. He only mentions one of his children by name, Daniel Newton LESLIE, but mentions other children "both male and female" who will share in the estate. He names John A. GILLIS executor. There are several pages of accounting of the estate settlement in 1860 and many Cumberland Co. names are listed such as CURRIE, CAMPBELL, McLEOD, McPHERSON, RAY, McNEILL, BLUE, McDIARMID, among others. We have not concluded whether this Daniel LESLIE who married Florah Ann GILLIS is related to our LESLIE line that migrated to Macon Co., AL, but would appreciate any information anyone might have to share, such as the names of the siblings of son Daniel Newton LESLIE. Hi Gilbert, I think I ask you about the RAY family connection to the GILLIS line at one time. I have Ann GILLIS that married John RAY in Richmond Co. in 1832. My families were in Richmond,Cumberland, and Moore Counties. Some stayed in NC, but some went to GA, AL, MS. LA. then TX with stops in between. How far have you gone back on your grandmother's side? Since I have 2 lines on the GILLIS side, both in that area I would like to hear about her. I am sure she is related to one of these families. I will be happy to share what I have on John Ray (not much) or the 2 Gillis lines (a lot after).
