    2. Can anyone tell me were Jackson Mill was during the Civil War in NC? I'm thinking it was around Sampson, Duplin or Wayne Co. This would be the Company D of the 67th Regiment of NCT from 1 March 1864 to the 30 June 1864. The company's Captain was D.A. Cogdell's and they were at Jackson Mill on June 30 1864. 1. [NCCUMBER] death record look-up
    2. Dorrita White
    3. Hi, I am seeking a death lookup regarding Charles Franklin Arnette. I'm not sure he died in Cumberland Co but I know he lived there in 1930 as he was listed on the census in Rockfish Township. Charles ( Charlie) died march 21, 1944. His wife was Martha C. Parnell Arnette. I would happily pay for an uncertified copy of this death certificate. I'd appreciate any help regarding my brickwall as I know nothing about Charlie's parents or where they came from. I'm hoping some of this info will be on this document. Kind Regards, Dorrita White Texas, USA

Since tens of thousands of Highland Scots came to the Upper Cape Fear Valley between 1739 and the 1840s, the Celebration, set for November 28-30, is intended to be a gathering for descendants of all of the Scottish Clans who came to North Carolina. More Scots settled here than in any other state, and Moore County is the most Scottish county of all. Thus, it is appropriate that various sites in Moore County, centering at the Fair Barn at the Harness Track in Pinehurst, will welcome the descendants of these hardy emigrants. Events will include Friday afternoon seminars in the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst on Scottish Heritage, led by Dr. Bill Lawson, noted Highland Scots genealogist (from the Isle of North Uist) on 'How to Trace Ancestors in the Western Scottish Highlands and Islands'; as well as a seminar by Dr. Robert Cain of the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, on 'How to Trace Scottish Ancestors in the North Carolina records'; one on 'Scotland and the South: the Literary Connections" by Dr. Thomas Richardson (Eudora Welty Professor at Mississippi University for Women, Columbus, MS), and another on 'Why the Scots Came to North Carolina' by Dr. Douglas Kelly (author of "Carolina Scots"). Friday evening there will be a Tartan Ball and Ceilidh at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst, with the McRowdie Band, Flora McDonald Gammon and Sandy Gallamore's Charlotte Scottish Country Dance Society to lead everyone in dancing. On Saturday morning, a worship service will be held in historic Union Presbyterian Church (between Carthage and Vass) at 11:00 a.m., following the traditional order of Highland worship two centuries ago. After that, participants will gather for a barbeque dinner, served back at the Fair Barn at 1:00 p.m. where they will be able to browse displays on Scottish history and culture, and find their Tartan and clan. They will also be able to have historic pictures scanned to computer disks to share with other family members. There will be events to entertain the children ('Wee Scots') in the afternoon, and tours of historic homes, churches, as well as antique and pottery shops in the area. Tours will also be offered on Friday and Sunday afternoon as well. Some clans will gather Saturday evening, and others will attend the annual banquet of the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina. These events are sponsored by the Kelly and Blue families of Moore County, with friends from other clans, including the McIvers, Scottish Heritage USA, St. Andrews Presbyterian College of Laurinburg, and the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina. Several hundred are expected, including friends from Scotland, Canada and Australia. All are cordially welcome. --part1_1dd.f8e023c.2c741a03_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <NCCUMBER-L-request@rootsweb.com> Received: from rly-xl05.mx.aol.com (rly-xl05.mail.aol.com [172.20.83.74]) by air-xl03.mail.aol.com (v95.12) with ESMTP id MAILINXL34-5dc3f359749346; Sat, 09 Aug 2003 20:52:34 -0400 Received: from lists2.rootsweb.com (lists2.rootsweb.com [207.40.200.39]) by rly-xl05.mx.aol.com (v95.1) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINXL510-5dc3f359749346; Sat, 09 Aug 2003 20:52:27 -0400 Received: (from slist@localhost) by lists2.rootsweb.com (8.12.8/8.12.8) id h7A0q5wQ003772; Sat, 9 Aug 2003 18:52:05 -0600 Resent-Date: Sat, 9 Aug 2003 18:52:05 -0600 X-Original-Sender: bbtyner@carolina.net Sat Aug 9 18:52:05 2003 From: "Bess & Blake Tyner" <bbtyner@carolina.net> Old-To: <NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sat, 9 Aug 2003 20:52:12 -0400 Message-ID: <005d01c35ed9$a3285730$634c02cf@thinkpad> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.4510 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 Importance: Normal In-Reply-To: <200302110001.h1B01R2i031086@lists2.rootsweb.com> Subject: [NCCUMBER] www.robesoncountyhistory.org Resent-Message-ID: <1Xqk5C.A.t6.1cZN_@lists2.rootsweb.com> To: NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com Resent-From: NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com X-Mailing-List: <NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com> archive/latest/893 X-Loop: NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com Precedence: list Resent-Sender: NCCUMBER-L-request@rootsweb.com X-AOL-IP: 207.40.200.39 Take a look at the newest website about Robeson County's history. 3. Hi folks, guess I should have mentioned that we have started a Manley/Manly surname DNA Family Tree project as well. We are hoping to have at least one male of each established "colonial" branch join in the project as well as representatives from several of the known Irish, English and Welsh lines. Our goals to to find which, if any of those earliest American lines are connected and establish the correct UK line for the various branches by finding common markers and determining any common ancestor. At the moment we have 5 members representing the Basil/Gov. Charles Manley branch, the Fermanagh, Ireland branch, the Poulton, Cheshire, England branch and an unknown branch. 3. My SHAW ancestors come from Cumberland Co. In the 1810 census I find my family listed in Capt. MacCranie's District along with Arch. and Murdoch McCranie. In the 1850 census (Haywood Co., TN) I find my ggggrandfather, Malcom SHAW (age 63), his wife Margaret (age 60), sons Dushee, Daniel and Malcom (oldest son Neil has his own household in Haywood Co.), Flora McCRAIN (age 35), and two grandchildren Margaret and Daniel RICHARDSON (children of his deceased oldest child Mary Ann SHAW). All except the grandchildren were born in NC. My guess is that Flora is either a servant, or a relative. Perhaps she is a clue to Malcom's first wife (wives?). The birth dates of his children are all before the marriage date of Malcom SHAW and Margaret SHAW (her father was Daniel SHAW, mother Rebecca BUIE). I believe that Margaret was a cousin. Certainly Daniel's and Malcom's lands were adjacent. I have found no information about the mother of his children. There are other Malcom SHAW marriages, but unfortunately there were at least three Malcom SHAWs in the county during this time period. Helping a friend with her DAR application based on MONRO (MUNROE, etc.) ancestors in Cumberland Co. (now Hoke Co.) I found on the Monroe Genealogy Website, a mention of Capt. Neill McCranie in "Massacre at the Piney Bottom." "He belonged to Colonel Armstrong's command." Yes, I have seen the new McCRANIE genealogy on the Cumberland website. However, under lists of NC militia, I see no mention of Capt. McCRAINIE. Does anyone know more about his unit? Is there any way of finding a list of men serving under him? I plan an August visit to the NC Archives in Raleigh, and would appreciate any advice for finding more information in the archives. There is a link on the Cumberland Co. website, "Oaths of Allegiance." From the lists I realize that men refusing to take the oath must have been Tories. Were all male residents of the county required to take this oath? When was a county government free from the British governor set up in Cumberland? Thanks for your patience! I realize that I've asked a lot of questions. Any help will be appreciated. Best wishes, Cora coralmcdonnell@comcast.net
