Correction. The couple were married about 1782. Her date of death is unknown. Good Morning, I ran into some questions I thought maybe someone could help with. Remember the papers that I forward that Potts had done on DAVID Rainer of Sampson Co. NC., I'm wondering if he was not RIGHT. He had Amy's birth date much earlier, and David's birth date plus he was married twice. Now the question I ran into but cannot answer them with what answers we have. 1. David's death date:::: On AUG. Term of 1820 AMY applied for 1 year provision of land and material things. 2. OCT./ NOV. term of 1820 DAVID Raynor sold to JOHN Raynor for 208 acres proved by Kedar Smith. 3. OCT./NOV. 1820 DAVID Raynor to JAMES J. Raynor for 200 acres proved by Issac Strickland. 4. NOV. 20 1820 Raynor estate and Inventory and account of sales property of DAVID Raynor. 5. May 1828 Report of committee on the estate of David Raynor, decd was returned. Question:::: If our David died before Aug. 1820, he COULD NOT have sold the land to John and James J. Raynor. Betty your William would have been to young, so then would the son William be William David or are we looking at two David's. David who married Amy and another David. Question:: Remember that Amy Raynor wrote her will 1 Aug. 1833 and probated Feb. court 1834. 1. JAN./ Feb Term 1828 Raynor Guardian Ordered Samuel Raynor be guardian of MATTHEW and RICHARD Raynor Bond was $1000.00 Securities were Moore Thornton and Reddick Lee. 2. JAN. /Feb. term 1828 Raynor accounts Order John King, Archibald Monk and Moses Cox be appointed to settle the accounts of AMY RAYNOR late guardian of Matthew and Richard Raynor. 3. In the 1830 census AMY RAYNOR was listed as head of house. So how could this be the same AMY, it could not, there was two AMY's. Minute Docket to AUG. Tem 1837 Sampson Co. No. 32 State vs. Samuel Rainer, Matthew Rainer JR. and Whitfield Thornton. Pease Warrent The defendants solemnly called be failed to answer-An motion judgment of Vis against Samuel Rainer for $100 and MATTHEW Rainer and Whitfield Thornton each for the sum of $50. Notice that Matthew Rainer was a JR., the Matthew of David and Amy was not old another to have a JR. that old. This is just a few of the things that does not match what we all have listed in our records. I went to the Archives yesterday and got Amy's estate papers, there were four pages. Joab, Matthew and Samuel all had notes that were due to Amy's estates. The accounts of estate of things sold listed a few of these names, Joab Rainer bought 2 items, Richard Rainer bought 10 items, Matthew Rainer bought 10 items, Green Hill bought 1, Green Hill 1, B. G. Thornton 1, Wm Rainer bought 3, Sion Hill 2, Wm Cox Ser. 1, James Rainer 1, Benj. I Thornton, 1, Samuel Rainer 1, Jno Eldridge 1, and Whitfield Thornton 1. I think I'm going to the Archives in the morning, does anyone have any ideas to check for more info., I know I'm going to check David's estate records. Thanks, Donna
I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to get copies of the estate records listed on your Cumberland website. Have they been abstracted or is there a book ? Is there anyoe on the list I could pay to get me these copies I need. Thanks Pat

I talked with Billie and Mr. Thomas (I think that's his name) is fine for the appraiser. Just send the bills for the taxes and the ad. Who's receipt is lacking? I'm new to the list, but have followed the list for Cumberland County. I've finally found a location in NC for my ggg-grand father name, Orrin Richmond Potter who was born in Guilford, North Carolina. I have him in Illinois and married in 1856. I knew from the census that at least his dad was from NC, but never knew where to start looking for him. Are there any online birth records that I can look through or do I need to go to Greensboro / Raleigh? This is great. It's the first time we've had a chance to add another branch to the tree. thanx, clarence
Re: ROBESON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING SATURDAY, JANUARY 10TH, 2004 The Annual Meeting of the Robeson County Genealogical Society will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 10th, 2004 at the Auditorium on North Chestnut Street in Lumberton. This is directly across the street from the main entrance of the Robeson County. The first Saturday, on or after the 6th of January, has been chosen for the Annual Meeting of the Society in celebration of our county's creation on January 6th, 1787. Guest Speaker will be the Honorable Retired Judge Henry A. McKinnon, Jr., who will be speaking on the creation of the county. Judge McKinnon is a noted Historian, who is one of the leading authorities on Robeson County History. We still have some copies of "Our Heritage, Robeson County North Carolina, 1748-2002" remaining, and will be available that day for purchase. These are wonderful reference books for all who are interested in Robeson County, her History, and her Families [articles on nearly 800 Robeson County families are included]. Door prizes will also be given out as a part of the celebration. The public is cordially invited, and encouraged to attend. Hope to see you there. Hi Jeanne: I'll be glad to do a look up for you if you can be more specific. The Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions records are in chronological order with no index. To find specific entries, someone has to read page by page, entry by entry to find the information you want. This can be extremely time consuming. I usually average reading one year's worth of records per hour. The records you cited, 1755 - 1791, would require close to 40 hours worth of reading!! I'll be glad to get the info you need, but need specific dates. -------Original Message------- From: jim gilmer Date: 01/07/04 12:03:38 To: NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com; cpotter@med.unc.edu Subject: Re: [NCCUMBER] Potter in Guilford Clarence, There were no vital records of birth and death kept in North Carolina until after the early part of the 20th century. Marriage records are recorded in the county courthouses after about 1868, by law. Prior to that, there are some extant marriage bonds available in the NC State Archives in Raleigh, but they are only a tiny percent of all marriages. Local newspapers that existed at the time of your ancestor's life, that may now be on line, could have some info. There is a NC newspaper project on-going to get these old newspapers on-line. You'll need to do a Google search, or perhaps if you ask, someone may already know the web-site address to look for this. A couple of preliminary approaches I might suggest: 1. Ask for a look up of your ggg grandfather's name; there are several people on line with Cumberland County connections who have extensive resources available on Cumberland County families. 2. Of course, if you have access to Ancestry.com census records on-line, you can look through the appropriate census records for your ancestor and families. If you don't have access, then most larger libraries have the census records. 3. Once you have nailed down pretty much which town, county, etc., where your ancestor lived, you can visit the local area and research the local courthouse records, info that might be in local libraries, etc. You should visit the US Gen Web site for the county where your ancestor lived, also. 4. A visit to the NC State Archives in Raleigh may be in order, if you can arrange that---I don't know where you live; if that is not practical to get there, you can find people on line who will do research for you at the Archives, for a reasonable fee. Have you researched all the records on Rootsweb.com and Ancestry.com that are available under your ancestor's name? Good luck, Jim Gilmer -------Original Message------- From: Clarence Potter Date: 01/07/04 09:26:50 To: NCCUMBER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCCUMBER] Potter in Guilford I've finally found a location in NC for my ggg-grand father name, Orrin Richmond Potter he was born in Guilford, North Carolina.
