In reviewing the known descendants of Wiley Cain (born 01 Jun 1828 White Oak, Bladen county, NC and died between 1902 & 1910), I chanced on the 1902 voter registration list of Flea Hill, Cumberland county, NC. In addition to those I knew of, there is a James L. CAIN, age 38, registered 4 Oct 1902, who claims "Wiley Cain" as his ancestor who previously voted in Cumberland county. In 1910 census of Black River twp, Cumberland county, NC I find the following family: James L. CAIN age 45, born NC of NC parents, farm laborer married 1 time for 19years. Susan (wife) age 43 born NC of NC parents; married once 19 years ago (so .. about 1891) three daughters ... all enumerated as "adopted" Mary E. CAIN age 17 born NC of NC parents Joulie? CAIN age 14 born NC of NC parents (name hard to read) Mollie CAIN age 12 born NC of NC parents There were other Wiley Cain other than he born 1828 but none that I knew of old enough to be a father in 1864. Here is this James L. Cain in 1880: Census Place: Flea Hill, Cumberland, North Carolina Source: FHL Film 1254960 National Archives Film T9-0960 Page 393B Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace E. Combine these with the 500 word family articles and photos, and the 500 word pioneer stories & pictures, and we'll have a gold mine of information. Our next meeting is Thursday, June 17, at 6:30 PM. New location; Golden Corral, on Hwy 15-501 in Aberdeen. (Near Wal-Mart). Come and see what all the excitement is about! Proceeds benefit the Moore Co. Genealogical society and other Genealogical preservation projects in Moore County! ____________________________________________________________ Find what you are looking for with the Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp?SRC=lycos10
Hi again, George. Let me give you a few bits and pieces: From # 355 "...The will of Josiah Wilson, cited in the narrative on Leonard Lock d. unk., has attracted earlier Lock Family searchers. The witnesses were Benjamin Elwell, Hannah Lock and Linard (Leonard) Lock. Others have attempted to identify the wife of Josiah Wilson as a daughter of John Lock d. 1781/2, primarily because of the names of these witnesses. That appears to be incorrect. Wilson's wife was named Sarah, Bladen Deed Book 7 page 12. The will of John did not identify a daughter of this name..." From # 36 Deed Book 7 20 Septr. 1797-Sarah Wilson, Sarah Russ, George Wilson, John Singletary, Deborah Singletary, Mary Wilson, John Benson & Ann Benson, his wife and Elizabeth Wilson to John Wilson-100 lbs. 300 acres on the No.E. side of N.W. River lying between lands of George Martin & Doctor Thos. Hall, which land was granted to John Davis in 1736 & sold by sd. Davis to William White on 18 March 1737 & by sd White sold to William Bartram on 8 Nov. 1743 & by sd Bartram sold to Anthony Gully on 19 March 1750 & by sd Gully to Edmund Forgartee on 18 Feby.1768 & by them to Josiah Wilson on 25 May 1772. Wit: James Lock, Willie Swindall. November Term 1797. J.S. Purdie, C.C. NOTE A: Book # 4 shows the spelling to be Anthony Golly and Edmund Logatie in the above transaction. NOTE B: Notice that every one of the children and his wife are mentioned by name in the above transaction EXCEPT Ambrose. I believe he died after 1793 and before 1797 because he would have had to be a party to this and there is no mention of Ambrose in anything including taxpayers, wills, census, all of NCGSJ, Hathaways, etc. after 1789 when he is listed as living next to George and 1793 when he is listed on a petition. I can find no record of a sale of his interests in his father's estate. See # 135 below. From # 36 Deed Book 7 255 12 April 1787. Grant No. 2214 to Sarah Wilson 200 acres east of the No Wt River at the Rays Creek. 356 4 Sept 1799. Sarah Wilson, planter to Jeremiah Plummer- 40 lbs 200 acres on N E side of the N W River at Rays Creek. Wit: James Salter, James Lock. March Term 1800. J. S. Purdie, C.C. From # 135 Bladen County Tax Lists of 1789 Capt Johnsons District George Wilson, 330 acres, 1 white poll Ambres Wilson, 290 acres, 1 white poll NOTE: Nearby , within a few houses (farms, etc,) were the families of Lock, Benson, Salter, Russ and Singletary, all of whom have been mentioned in connection with your family. Bladen County Tax Lists of 1786 George Wilson, white males from 21 to 60 = 1, white males under 21 & over 60 = 2, white females = 8. Paraphrased: Ambrose Wilson was a signer of a petition for reduced ferry charges in Bladen County in November, 1793, but he is not listed on the census of 1790. No one in the family is listed in the 1800 census of Bladen but a George appears again in the 1810 census with 1 free white male 20-30, and 1 free white female 20-30 (son?) From # 11 paraphrased: three George Wilson wills on file (index only) but only two have dates that might work: 1st George was Lincoln County, c 1803; 2nd George was Craven County, 1844. Dee There is nothing on the family in Bibles, Cemeteries, NC Ancestors, Passports, Colonial Records. I searching for the family of my g-g-grandmother Mary Frances Hodge, born 1-18-1840, who married Daniel Marion Albertino on 2-26-1866 in Cumberland County, NC, and moved westward to Cocke and later to Greene Counties in TN, where she died on 8-13-1888. I believe, but am not sure, she was the daughter of Elisha Hodge and Mary Gain who married in Cumberland County, NC on 5-23-1837. Elisha's father may have been Philemon Hodge or Hodges who also lived in Cumberland County and I believe was born before 1775. Does anyone have information on this family or any of Mary's ancestors? Mary and Daniel have many, many descendants in this area and beyond. I'd like to share information with anyone interested. Shelia

Searching for the sons and immediate family of Malcolm McPherson Sr. [c1740-c1804] and his wife Christian Downie of Cumberland County, NC. I have found the history written by Mr. Daniel G. McPherson of MN, "The McPherson Family Genealogy 2000," but have found extra information beyond his research. Also looking for the family of Jonathan McPherson, Sr. [alive 1738-1760] of the Neuse River in Craven County, NC, and whose son Jonathan Jr. apparently moved to Cumberland circe 1772 and settled on Black Mingo Creek. Jonathan Sr. also had a son named Daniel McPherson.

Looking for help with my grandmother's family. She was Rachel Helen Godwin b. 1893 in Stedman NC. Her father was Jesse Godwin and her mother was Nepsy or Nepsie Godwin. Nepsy's parents were James and Helen or Helan Hall. This is all I know of the family. Rachel married Joseph Whitfield Taylor of Florence SC in the mid 1920s. My grandmother was sent to the Salvation Army Home for Unwed mothers in Florence SC by her older brother due to embarassment. I was told my grandmother was raped by a soldier in the early 1920s. Any help in searching would be helpful. Cliff
Ken, LDS family search lists William E. Smith m Mary Ann Yopp 1852 and includes all their children. It also states William E. Smith b. 1828 son of David Smith and Sarah Davis, but other sources indicate David's wife was Sarah McLean. The Yopp family book list William as William E. Smith from Cumberland Co., but doesn't identify his parents. She died September 27, 1914. I have one child, Margaret Smith, born March 18, 1854 in Wilmington, died January 28, 1932 in Wilmington and is buried at Oakdale Cemetery. She married William J Morris. Searching for the parents of WILLIAM E. SMITH born 1828 in Cumberland County, NC. His father may have been a "David Smith" of Fayetteville but that can't be verified. William moved from Cumberland to New Hanover Co. between 1830 and 1850. About 1852 William married Mary Ann Yopp near Wilmington. According to the 1860 Census, they lived in Canetuck Township, New Hanover County, NC where William was a farmer. That area today is in Pender County near the towns of Currie, Point Caswell and Atkinson. William enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 at the age of 33 and died while on duty in Wilmington in 1864. His military record states that he was born in Cumberland Co. and enlisted in a Cumberland/Harnett unit. I can't link William E. with any of the Smith families in Cumberland County. Some of the surnames associated with William E. Smith were Larkins, Yopp, Corbett, Price, Pridgen and possibly Davis. Any help would be appreciated! Ben Hudson abhudson@bellsouth.net
