    1. Clarks in Cumberland Co.
    2. Donnie and Mary Young
    3. I recently received information on another Clark line that could connect with my Clark line. I'm not entirely sure, but thought I would inquire this list to see if anyone else is working on Clark lines of Cumberland/Moore Co's. David Clark -- born Sept 10, 1756 married his cousin Nancy McLean, Aug 6, 1770 in Cumberland Co. David died April 7, 1835. I'm not sure of the validity of the next part of the notes, but it is said he named a son Hugh McCraine Clark. It was also noted that Alexander and Hugh McCraine were living in his household at one time. This is particularly interesting to me because my ancestor Alexander Clark's marriage bond to his second wife Margaret McCraine/McRaine was signed by Alan McLean. I have yet to find Alexander Clark's parents or siblings. He had quite a few children with his first wife, and none with his second wife (to my knowledge -- at the time of his death, the property was split between his second wife and children). Most of his children (if not all) ended up in Calloway Co Kentucky along with other Cumberland Co names. Back to David Clark -- he is said to be the son of Gilbert and Ann Alexander. It's believed he also had a brother, Daniel Clark who reportedly married a woman by the name of Eleanor, and reportedly had three sons -- Alexander, Archibald, and William. It's believed these children might have migrated to South Carolina, but I don't have any other information than that. Here's some information on my Alexander Clark -- Alexander Clark married Margaret Thompson March 4, 1794 (probably in Moore Co or in the surrounding area). She is believed to be the sister of a Daniel Thompson who lived next door -- possibly the son of Malcom or Dugald Thompson. They had the following children: Catherine Clark b Oct 6, 1796 - she married Daniel Roderick McIver (son of Little John and Mary Monroe) Mary Clark b May 29, 1798 - she married Miles Kelly (son of Duncan and Mary Kelly) Florah Clark b March 7, 1800 - she married Alexander Shaw Gilbert Clark b June 2, 1803 died October 27, 1824 Malcom Clark b October 16, 1806 - he married Sarah/Sallie Kelly (sister of Miles Kelly) Margaret Clark b Oct 20, 1810 - to my knowledge, she never married, and if memory serves me correctly, she died in Calloway Co. KY Alexander's first wife, Margaret Thompson, died in 1813 probably in Moore Co NC. So, if someone on the list can help decipher the Clark lines, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks. ~ Mary (Clark) Young

    2. KATHRYN LEWIS
    3. Nellie Culbreath, born approximately 1800, was the mother of John C. Culbreath, born 1818. Seeking anyone who has a Nellie in their family as Culbreath could have been her maiden name. Just found her name in a family bible, but the father of John was a blank space. Well, at least I found the great great grandmother but would love to find out her husband's name! 1. James Jackson Harvill
    2. I am trying to get more information about my Great Great Grandfather, James Jackson Harvill. According to family records he was born on January 15, 1815. While at the LDS Genealogical Center in Salt Lake City, I found that a James Jackson Harvill was born on the same date in Cumberland County, NC. The father was listed as; Squire (James) Harvill (Harville/Harvel). The mother was listed as either Zelpha Harville or Mary Money (Monette). One of his sons (my Great Grandfather) John Washington Harvill was born in Jackson County, GA. From that point on the family lived mostly in Georgia. I have retired and now live in Sapphire, NC which is west of Brevard. If anyone can provide additional information about James Jackson Harvill or his relatives, or suggest how I might, it would be greatly appreciated............Andy Harvill

    2. No, the old MARS is no longer available. We have moved all the land grant records (which listed streams and rivers) into our new MARS system, available at www.ncarchives.dcr.state.nc.us. You can do a keyword search throughout all the collections now. Land grants are filed in the collections referred to as State Records since they are filed in the Secretary of State Office records.

    2. fredandfran
    3. William WEST was enumerated by name for the first time on the Duplin census of 1840. He was enumerated on the Duplin census of 1850, not found on the HQ version of the Duplin census of 1860, and was enumerated on the Duplin census of 1870. Based on this preliminary search, I am concluding he lived out his life (at least most of it) in Duplin. William married Mary/Molsey Jane MURPHY. Can anyone please provide the date of marriage? Some of the children enumerated in their 1850 household were: Danl. J.; Mary J.; Nancy C.; Susan; and Wm. When did William die? I would like to correspond with anyone researching/having knowledge of this William WEST. Any help appreciated.

And then at the end, after getting the "lizard tech" viewer downloaded, I couldn't pull up all the hits to view them. I think I have a security block of some sort with the Norton Security and/or anti-virus; I've run into those before; some I could work around; some I couldn't. 3. I'm probably not one who should be talking because my parents were married in a county neither ever lived in and at least 70 miles from anyplace either ever lived in, apparently, solely because a taxi driver knew a place that they could get married in on a Sunday while dad was in basic training during WWII... but... isn't it sort of a "rule of thumb" that if bride & groom are from different counties they are probably married in the bride's county...? 2. fredandfran
    3. A number of WEST folks who lived in Duplin County went to New Hanover County to be married. Regarding those marriages I have a three part question: 1. Among those folks were Isaac W. WEST and Joshua WEST. These two men married in New Hanover and returned to Duplin to live and raise families. 2. Does anyone have any thoughts as to reasons these folks go to New Hanover County to be married? 3. Louise C. WEST and Jerusha WEST were also married during this same time frame 1844-1857 in New Hanover County, and I have been unable to tie them to a WEST family in either Duplin or New Hanover. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information on either/both of these two females. 4. What was the method used to get to Wilmington (boat, horse back and/or buggy?) 1844-1857 and what route would they have taken from Duplin (possibly Magnolia area) to Wilmington? (Not being from, or living in, NC, I don't know which local roads on today's maps were in place during the 1840's/50's .) Any help/clues appreciated. Thanks.

    2. I wanted everyone to know you can see the wills, deeds ect. on line at the archives. For those who haven't been there, type in NC Archives, it will take you to the NC site, there click on archives on left, it takes you to another site, click on Mars, it will then launch you to the archives. Once there go down to state and check state, then go back up to top and fill in last name, (Smith, John) ect. To see the wills you will need to download their program. Good Luck on searching. Donna

    3. No, they are very much intact from about 1755 onward. Bladen County's records were destroyed 3 times. Cumberland was formed from Bladen in 1754, and Bladen's records first burned in the 1760s. 2. Has anyone visited the burial grounds of the JOHN KELLY family of Fayetteville or compiled family tree information ? JOHN KELLY died in 1842. Thanks to Donna at [email protected] for the info from the Oates book. According to his will and the info from the book, he was buried there with at least one wife and several of his children. His will also gave this ground to the Catholic church for their use as well. Thanks, JC
