    3. In 1811 (Duplin DB4A, p232) Elizabeth KNOWLES signed deed in her own name. This tells Elizabeth was at least age 21 in that year, having her birth year ca 1790. Emanuel and James KNOWLES also signed that deed. Was KNOWLES the maiden or married name of Elizabeth? What was Elizabeth's relationship to Emanuel and James KNOWLES? When and where did Elizabeth die?

    1. Interested in the land grant process? FYI
    2. Steve E.
    3. An explanation of how land claims and entries became land grants in North Carolina, from "The Dixie Frontier," by Everett Dick, 1948, p. 10: "The North Carolina law, applicable to Tennessee in 1782, had the advantage over that of Kentucky, however, in that an official surveyor marked off the land. The system was: (1) A claimant would go into the woods and mark out roughly the boundaries of the desired tract. (2) This crude survey when submitted to the entry-taker at the land office was called an "entry." He made a record of the entry and issued a warrant for the survey. (3) The official surveyor connected with the land office then made a survey and submitted a plat to the secretary of state, who issued a land grant. (4) The title was complete when the grant was recorded in the office of the register of the county where the land lay."

    2. This seems like a good time to put out my search for Daniel McNeill [of many spellings]. MY Daniel was born 1799 according to his funeral Card and the one census I was able to find him in. He was Sheriff of Moore Co., born in Cumberland Co.. He appears to have been a brother of Malcolm, also Sheriff of Moore Co. His marriage bond mentions the Sheriff <G> so I know it is the right one <G> he married Julia Farish of Chatham Co. My gggm seems to be their eldest child and Emily Ann married Mathew Michie Lacy in Marshall Co. Eliz

    3. I've done a lot of research into families, geography and land deeds in the Rockfish Creek area. 'Mirey meadow' was probably (or was very near) Mirey/Miry branch. I recall thinking that Miry branch was located somewhere in the fork of Rockfish Creek and Cape Fear River but I can't be sure. To see a map of this area, go to my site, http://www.capefearclans.com, click on 'locale maps' in the navigation bar and scroll down to the second map. This is the Rockfish Creek tax district in 1829. If you tell me what name you're searching, I might be able to help you further. Also, if you're local to that area, you could contact an experienced surveyor who's worked in that area--sometimes they have to trace old deeds in the courthouse for lost corners of much older land tracts, so they learn where old branches, swamps and watercourses used to be.
