Along this same vein, can anyone identify the Neill McNeill who came to America, supposedly with two youngs sons "Sailor Hector" and "Shoemaker John" McNeill, around 1740 and came to live in Bladen County (his lands are now in Hoke and owned by McNeill descendants) around the 1760s? His homestead still stands on the Rt 401 Bypass and is occupied by McNeill descendants. His parents and siblings are not known to me. 3. NEVIN and JOHN GALBREATH: There is a Neil Colbreath living as a single poll (married: not known) and no slaves in both 1774 and 1775. He is located very near to James McNeill of Rockfish Creek, my ancestor. James McNeill lived up near Raeford, NC along today's border of Cumberland and Hoke County, NC. There is a John Culbreath living in Captain McKissick's district in 1789 with 150 acres. I can't identify the neighborhood. Usually in this list everyone has a poll number with their names, John has no number of polls by his name. All others with no poll number appear to be dead, with "deceased" or "estate of" by their names. Perhaps they were only being assessed for their acreage for estates settlement purposes. kathryn lewis wrote: >Steve: Would you do a look-up for me in your two volumes of the Bladen County tax lists, please, for Nevin (Nevon, Neven) Culbreath, Colbraith, Galbreath and also for John Culbreath, Colbraith, Colbreath? 3. Steve, I think I know the map you mentioned. There is a James McDonald much farther up the Cape Fear River. We have no idea who he is. 3 McDonald brothers, James, John and William were shipped to the harbor of Charleston after the Culloden Battle, 1747, Jacobite prisoners. We have wondered if possibly these are the parents of our James and John.I found a will at Lancaster Co. S.C. by a William McDonald giving his land in Montgomery Co. N.C. to nephews William and James1805. After searching the Middleton McDonalds, finding their William had died in 1801, we believe this is a brother to our James Sr.No proof. William and Rutha had 10 children, she died 1835, he married again, had 6 more children. He died in 1862. 3. Steve, the land was at Cross Creek, known as the pine thicket.James' brother-in law was John Newberry Jr.;whose Father founded the town of Cross Creek and built the first grist mill. James sold the land to his Father-in law in 1761, Thomas Matthews Sr. Info on Newberrys from Roy Parker's book, Cumberland Co.A Brief History. I have found a lot of info from William C.Field's books, Abstracts of Deeds.James was a schoolteacher and land speculator, as was his in-laws.Thomas Matthews and son, Jr. were blacksmiths. James had moved to Montgomery Co. by 1779, but is still buying and selling land in Cumberland. 1790 cx.Montgomery Co. has him and his family, minus the daughter Mary, who married a Kirk. We found his will in Jefferson Co. Ga. 1810.5 children on the will, William, the last, born 1781, Yadkins Falls, Montgomery Co.Our line.Proof, Bible record of Great-grandfather and army records. We haven't found the sons, James Jr.,Matthews, and Jacob. We, 4 cousins from different children of William and Rutha Jane Wilson Mcdonald.James Jr.is possibly one of the 3 in Bibb Co. 3. Ruth, Yes, I've read that there was a second group a year or so after the first 1739 group, but never read that the Thistle was the ship used for the second group. And I don't believe there is an extant passenger list for the 39ers, correct? I thought that Malcolm Fowler et. al made the list based on early 1740 deeds to the immigrating highland and lowland Scots along the Cape Fear River ranging from just below Fayetteville in Cumberland Co. up into Harnett County. He made a comprehensive map of those settlers' grants along the river, and included it in on Please tell where James McDonald's grant was. I have some connections to McDonalds who owned land on Rockfish Creek fairly early, and I haven't been able to identify them. The 1760s is a decade when a large wave of Scots come into the area.
