Hi Billie, Thank you for the information. My SHAW ancestors were in Cumberland Co., NC before 1750 as evidenced by the Estate papers following the death of John SHAW. Three brothers, John, Duncan and Dushee SHAW migrated from Jura, I believe. It is most likely that their father was Neil SHAW. Duncan had no children. There were descendents from John and Dushee (my ancestor). I'm sure the McCraney listed in the 1850 Haywood Co. TN household census for Malcom SHAW was a family relative. I just can't prove it. I have seen many records of Colin SHAW, and, since they all came from Jura, our SHAW families are probably related. Hi Lois, It's interesting to read that John and Sophia ATKINS DRAKE moved to Haywood Co., TN. Can you approximate a date? My ancestor, Malcom SHAW moved his family from Cumberland Co., NC to Haywood Co., TN about 1835. I wonder how many Cumberland families migrated to that part of Tennessee. How do you get the DNA done?
Annette, and Steve, There must have been several Scots families that migrated from VA to NC, also the Scots Irish, as I am just finding in the past two years after having my sons DNA done that he matches a man marker for marker who's ancestry comes out of Spotsylvania Co VA originally from Ireland in the 1600 + where it was thought though not documented that the ancestry was straight from Scotland at a later date of 1747 arriving in Wake CO NC by 1750 this family arriving in NC at this time was a Charles Stewart, B:- abt 1718-1725 and wife Hannah Kirk, B:- 1732, I would love to know more on this migration Thank you Joyce Stewart
No, I don't know the year, or exactly where I read it, but it was in the 1700s. "The federal and local records covered by this legislation are not only of personal importance to the families involved," Lantos said in a speech on the House floor. They document the reuniting of our nation and the historic moment of transition for slaves from the status of property to citizens, a time when our country finally began to right a horrible moral wrong. Before he passed away, Glenn McGugan, descendant of John and Margaret McNeill McGugan of Robeson Co., spent many months researching McNeills in that region of North Carolina. I was one of his contributors. He was an excellent and precise researcher. Glenn and I were cousins through the McGugans. He was a striking Scot when dressed in full Scottish regalia! The link to his research of Neill McNeills is: http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi If you have a problem with the link, let me know. I believe I also saw Roderick's home in Hoke Co. Hi Steve - My information is from a variety of sources - Tombstones, IGI, OPR, Census, Marriage Bonds, Periodicals, Wills, Original Documents, etc., and a cousin who lives in Raeford whose mother researched the family, including going to Scotland and whose brothers live in the original McNeill home place.
