It seems that an Abel Huse came to Newbury, Massachusetts. A descendent Elihu Huse and various members of his family, for some unknown reason changes their name to Hewes. I have a copy of the "Descendents of John Hewes" book. This book was commissioned by David Hewes of California. In studying over it -- I almost feel that they "discovered" William Hewes of whom Joseph Hewes is a decendent and said these people are all connected. It seems that there are various ones who feel that there is some controversy there. In the research that I have done, it seems that when data was being recorded a great deal depended on the previous entry and the intelligence of the recorded as to which spelling they used - Huse - Hewes - Hughes, etc. So -- I am still muddling through all of this to find out as much as I can about the family and to learn if there is a connection with Joseph Hewes.
