Word of > mouth says it may have been a Benjamin Perry. The location is close! Do > you know your Benjamin's sons? > > I have my "feelers out" for ancestry of a JOHN E. PERRY who m. Nancy Hinton Kitchen, 1804. JOHN E. PERRY b. 1767, d. 1851. Nancy Hinton Kitchen b. 1788 was the daughter of JESSE KITCHEN, RS, who m. in Sussex Co., VA, 1787, SARAH JONES HINTON & removed from VA to Franklin Co., NC (1790 Cen.). JESSE d. in 1827. Although a Rev. Soldier, JESSE KITCHEN is not shown in White's abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files. There was a WILLIS PERRY who served for the NC Line (R8139), b. 31 Jul 1756 in Franklin Co., NC where he lived at enlistment and afterwards moved to Warren Co. (formerly Wilkes Co) GA and from there, 1816 or 1817 moved to Jackson Co. GA and had a further removal in 1827 to Muscogee Co. GA where he applied for pension in 1833, in which he referred to a son living in DeKalb Co GA. Scanning the 1787 Census of VA (Schreiner-Yantis & Love, p. 1111), I see in SUSSEX CO., VA, both a BENJAMIN KITCHEN (pd. own tax) 0-0-0-0-4 (4 cattle) and JESSE KITCHEN (pd. own tax) 0-0-1-0-0 (taxed for 1 black under 16) on the List "B". However, in scanning both List "A" and List "B" have not seen any HINTON on the Personal Property Tax. Deeds of Sussex Co., VA show a JAMES HINTON who along with a John Lands, Arthur Freeman & David Mason, witness a deed 8 Feb 1775 Nathaniel Newsum and wife, Susanna to James Barnes, south side of Poplar Swamp. Sussex Will Bk. "B" will of William Parker 6 Apr 1768/19 May 1768 among other heirs lists, "My daughter MARY HINTON" and water courses related to land: Austins Branch, Briery Branch, Indico Branch. Exrs: son William Parker & James Peters; witnesses: Richard Parker, Thomas Sisson, William Price and John Peters. That's all I see on Hinton. Sussex Deed Book "C", 21 Mar. 1765 shows Hinchea Gilliam to Joseph Hartfield of North Carolina...a negro wench and child. Wits: Joseph Renn, Thomas Arendal and B. PERRY. There are two BENJAMIN PERRYs shown in White's Absts of Rev. War Pensions - one in NH and one who served in the VA line, but who was born in 1752 in Spottsylvania Co, VA. The latter, too young to have been the "B." Perry, adult in 1765 in Sussex Co., VA Sussex Co. Deed Bk "D" 30 Sep 1768 shows Etheldred (X his mark) Holt, late of Southampton Co to Robert Bailey of Sessex Co....150 a. bounded by a corner of JOSEPH LANE and William Hix, BENJAMIN KITCHEN, Franklin Clark, William Evans and Etheldred Davis. Witnesses: Joseph Ellis, Nathan Jones, Charles Briggs and John Chappell. BENJAMIN KITCHEN is the only Kitchen in Sussex Co., VA Deed Books A-E (1754-1779); however, in Will Books A-F (1754-1806) several KITCHENs are mentioned: BENJAMIN KITCHEN, ROBERT JONES & Stephen Andrews were witnesses to the will of John Lamb 11 Mar 1785 Sussex Co. Account of the estate of Joshua Pretlow, decd shows payments to a number of people, including JAMES KITCHEN. The will of Nicholas Hancock 21 Jul 1799, Sussex, wife Agnes...several children named and among his five children, JEMIMAH KITCHEN, my eldest daughter. JOHN KITCHEN, John Lilly and Harrison Wynne witness the Sussex Co. will of Thomas Bailey, Sr. 26 Fb 1801. Should this ring any bells, please send me an email. Thank you, Kay G. KLWRAGEG@aol.com
