    1. Re: Evans Church

    3. I had the pleasure of visiting the Evans church this past spring while doing research for a book on a former slave from Chowan county. The church is beautiful, especially the stained glass windows and several of the pews are original to the building as well. I will look up the name of the minister for you and forward it. Unfortunately no records are extant at the church itself, but there were several leads as I recall as to where some might be located. An Evans descendent left the church to an African American congregation just recently, prior to her death. There appeared to be some additions going on when I was there. I do have some Evans family information that you might be interested in such as a copy of Zachariah's will...etc. I do know an elderly lady who is also an Evans descendent living in the county. The history in that are is wonderful and all the families seem to be connected in many ways. The Rockyhock area 'feels' very closed, in a good sense with history near to the top. One does not have to look hard to find it. Many of the old Plantation houses are still extant. If I can be of help, please let me know. There is still some research that I have yet to do...and I need to return some papers that were loaned to us by the Winborne family who are connected to the Evans family. I plan to be in the area in October to return the papers and finish up on my notes. Good Luck! Kindly, Theresa Nelson NelsonT@ecu.edu
