Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NC/Chowan/765 Surname: Lewis, Nelson, Madison ------------------------- I am researching one of my family lines which descend from Elisha LEWIS, who emigrated in 1810/11 from Craven County, North Carolina to Washington Co., MS., then on to Lawrence Co., Miss. in 1822. He was granted a passport on 23 Apr 1810. "That passports be prepared for the following persons to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians, to wit, one for Elisha Lewis and James Hagens from Craven Co., N.C. -- the former with his wife and 8 children; one for jesse Rogers of Marion District, S. C. with wife and 2 children, his father, sister-in-law and 12 negroes -- one for Matthew Jones from Clarendon County, South Carolina with wife and 5 children, Isham Nichols from Sumpter Dist., South Carolina with wife and 4 children and one for William Boyd from Sumpter Co., S. C. with wife and 3 children and 3 negroes." The known children of Elisha LEWIS are William, Arthur, Blount, Sarah and Elizabeth; however, from the passport we know there were at least eight. Also, the name "Isaac, John, Thomas" are used in this family line. I am not sure who the mother of the children are, as some sources show Frances Ann MADISON, who Elisha may have married in 1786.. I know that Elisha LEWIS married Ester NELSON, 20 Aug 1784 in Craven Co., NC. It's possible that Ester could be the mother. I have not been able to trace the family of Frances MADISON. There was a Frances MADISON that married Elisha COLLINS, 1783 in Halifax Co., VA, and had a son in 1787. I'm not sure if these names are somehow confused. Regardless, I suspect that my Elisha LEWIS is a part of the LEWIS family that you are researching, due to similarity of names, time, and location. Any information would be appreciated. I will gladly share what I have.
