I have been conducting family research in Edenton for about 10 years. I was just browsing the web in Google, at work, so I don't have my "stuff" in front of me. BUT-the Shepard I have, was the brother to a Sarah, who married William Cox, back in the late 1800s. William was one of four children(Harry, Tattie, William and Eden Cox), who were the children of slaves Providence(Provey) and Betty Cox. The children were slaves themselves, property of John Cox, who died in 1856. The children and their mother were petitioned for in the court system in 1861, by Cox's granddaughter and her husband (Ann and and John C. Page). I am a descendant of the oldest child, Harry, so Shepard and his sister, Sarah, would have been something like my great-great-great uncle and aunt, I believe. Anyway, I can pretty much see the census record I have at home in my mind, and I do believe that the Shepard I have was married to a Caroline, or Carolina. Will get back to you tomorrow!
