Posted on: Chowan County NC. Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NC/Chowan/765 Surname: Lewis, Nelson, Madison ------------------------- I am researching one of my family lines which descend from Elisha LEWIS, who emigrated in 1810/11 from Craven County, North Carolina to Washington Co., MS., then on to Lawrence Co., Miss. in 1822. He was granted a passport on 23 Apr 1810. "That passports be prepared for the following persons to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians, to wit, one for Elisha Lewis and James Hagens from Craven Co., N.C. -- the former with his wife and 8 children; one for jesse Rogers of Marion District, S. C. with wife and 2 children, his father, sister-in-law and 12 negroes -- one for Matthew Jones from Clarendon County, South Carolina with wife and 5 children, Isham Nichols from Sumpter Dist., South Carolina with wife and 4 children and one for William Boyd from Sumpter Co., S. C. with wife and 3 children and 3 negroes." The known children of Elisha LEWIS are William, Arthur, Blount, Sarah and Elizabeth; however, from the passport we know there were at least eight. Also, the name "Isaac, John, Thomas" are used in this family line. I am not sure who the mother of the children are, as some sources show Frances Ann MADISON, who Elisha may have married in 1786.. I know that Elisha LEWIS married Ester NELSON, 20 Aug 1784 in Craven Co., NC. It's possible that Ester could be the mother. I have not been able to trace the family of Frances MADISON. There was a Frances MADISON that married Elisha COLLINS, 1783 in Halifax Co., VA, and had a son in 1787. I'm not sure if these names are somehow confused. Regardless, I suspect that my Elisha LEWIS is a part of the LEWIS family that you are researching, due to similarity of names, time, and location. Any information would be appreciated. I will gladly share what I have.

Hello Chowan and Gates, I'm pleased to introduce you to 3 new NCGenWeb coordinators. Barbara McMahon, who has been the Chowan mail list owner since Dayle left us this summer, will be taking over the websites for both Chowan and Gates. Because these 2 counties are so closely related historically, it's great that we'll be able to keep them under the auspices of the same coordinator. Marceline Beem will be assuming Martin County, at least temporarily. She has a few Martin ties, and much experience with the NCGW Project. They'll be taking over, officially, as of Sunday, Aug. 13. I know you'll be pleased with Barbara and Marceline, and will help them thru the transition. The NCGenWEb also has a new State Coordinator. Elizabeth Harris's 2-year term ended in July, and Sharon Williamson was elected for the next term. I'm leaving my counties with mixed feelings, because I've really enjoyed being able to make some contribution to research in my home territories. But responsibilities at home and at school have escalated lately, and I need to step aside. I'll still be subbed to the lists, though, and hope to find some hobby time to resume my own personal research. Chowan, Gates, and Martin are being left in good hands, and I feel very good about that, too. Thank you, to all of you who have contributed to the growth and holdings of the Chowan and Gates websites. It's you who make the whole thing work! http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchowan/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgates/ State page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ PS: My trip to London and East Anglia was fantastic! If you have a fast modem and are curious to follow my adventures, I've posted a travelogue at my personal website: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~rosslibr/travel/london2000.htm Sincerely, Elizabeth (Betsy) Ross Outgoing NCGW County Coordinator: Chowan, Gates, Martin ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Is there anyone on the Chowan County list who might know of "Emily Crocker Johnson" or "Emma Crocker Johnson" or of the Crocker Family which she belongs to? Is there anyone who has a book of Chowan County Marriages that check to see if there is a marriage of Emily Crocker to George Willis Johnson in the late 1800s? pre-1885? My great grandmother was Emily J. Crocker Johnson. I am trying to ascertain if she had family in Chowan County. I know her name from my grandfather's marraige certificate which indicates that she was still alive in 1906 when he got married in Halifax County, NC. The marriage certificate lists Emily as still living in 1906 but lists her husband G. W. Johnson as deceased. I recently discovered an Emma Johnson on the 1900 NC census as head of household in Chowan County, NC and listing children that coincide for two of her known children: Della Johnson James Johnson Sara(h) Johnson It also lists a son Willis Johnson which I was not aware of but have since learned he died in his twenties. This 1900 Chowan Co, NC Census does not list my grandfather Charles Johnson but he would have been in his late teens and possibly living away from family at that point. I know that both Della and James lived in Roanoke Rapids as adults as did my grandfather Charles. Della married Tom Strawther. Sara married and lived in Burlington. Thanks

A search of >> You might wish to try Tina Hall's site on the web. She took over the site once kept by Henry Lee King. I believe it was called "King Crossroads." At her site, the previously conjoint site "King Crossroads" that Henry Lee King at one time kept with Lou Pero, has stored records on several King lines, among which, the early King families of the Chowan-Gates area of NC. It would be improbable that a line carried down to the Civil War & beyond would exist there, but I cannot and wouldn't discount it. Certainly, many of the lines are carried forward in great detail. I am new to the list and looking for information on my John Berry from Hyde County, NC. This is what I have so far. John Berry was born in 1810, he was married and had 2 sons that I am sure of. William Benjamin born in 1833 and Benjamin born in 1835. There could also be a son Richard born 1838 and Reuben born in 1840. Who was John's wife? Going by the Hyde County Census of 1850 and working backwards I believe that John's father was William Berry, born 1788 who married Nancy Sirman and had children Reuben, John, Rachel, and Lavinia. I believe that William Berry's father was William born circa 1749 and married to Sarah Green daughter of David Green. The first William was noted in Hyde County in 1786 and I am not sure where they came from. Could have been from Virginia. Another twist is that I have been told that there is Native American ancestry in the family and I am very interested in this. Thank you everyone.

It is believed that his family came from New Jersey or Long Island, NY. He was an attorney and a member of the House of Assembly (1771-1774), and was also named a Brig. General by the House of Assembly on 22 Apr 1776. He married Mary Benners. His son, Thomas, was also a lawyer in Edenton. Can anyone help or assist me as to who-what or where to look. Read the following letter. November 1, 1934 Dear John Carter and William G: I am writing from memory the outstanding facts of our family history. You could call it a genealogy I suppose. First generation, John Cale, Indian, lived near Edenton, N.C. His name appears in the old records of Albemarle settlement. He leased to the officers in charge of Albemarle Settlement his interest in the land for a period of 99 years for the sum of $100. This document is to be found among the papers of an old minister who lived in Edenton. The present register of deeds is a relative of this man, and took me to the home of the minister to see the record. Since I am not especially good at remembering names, I shall not attempt to write the name of this minister, who died just a few years before my father, and is well known in Edenton. John Cale married an English lady of high rank. I am not able to tell you more about the children of this Indian and his English wife than the fact that one of these was a son whom they named Charney. This word in Indian dialect meant beautiful. He died when my father was about eight years old, or not more than 70 years ago. He was 80 when he died. That would make his birth the year 1775. His father John must have been about 40 to 50 when he was exiled and later killed the English settlers who at this time had just become independent colonies. Charney Cale had a large family but I remember the names of only three boys. These were Gilbert, Graham and Duncan L. Duncan L was my grandfather and his children were William H., Emerline, John, Millie, Jane, Dancy and Franklin. Duncan L. was born in 1817, and my father was born in 1852. Graham Cale went to Texas in early life, and Gilbert went to Alabama to engage in the drug business. He had one son the age of my father named Robert M. whose daughter Fannie visited our home the year I married your mother. John Cale, my uncle died in Plymouth, N.C. in the Confederate Army, or a Yankee prisoner captured in an engagement near that town. Uncle William H. called "Billie" returned from the war a Yankee or Union soldier, married Miss Mary Butler of Windsor, who had three children, Duncan, Elizabeth, and Emma. These three died without marrying, and Uncle Billie lived only a few years after the birth of the youngest. My grandfather married Harriet Hoggard, daughter of Patrick Hoggard, a full blooded Irishmen. My father married Martha C. Castellow, a beautiful women of French, Irish and English blood. The Castellows live in Bertie County, and spelled the Castellaw, when they first bought lands in that county. My mother's father was Larry Castellow, who died in 1784. He had four sons and three daughters. My mother was the oldest, James the next and Aunt Jane, the wife of my Father's brother Franklin, called Frank, the next Cullen L. Lemuel-a handsome youth when he died in 1881, Henry B. and Barbara A., now living in Windsor. She is Mrs. Daniel B. Jones. She is just five years older than I am, and was my big sister when I started to school 54 years ago. William H. Cale Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Posted on: Chowan County NC. Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Chowan?read=754 Surname: Douglas ------------------------- It certainly does appear we are all searching for an Alexander Douglas link! I have just begun my search, and all my current information is from my father (who has extensive documentation) or from various websites (which I have not substantiated but will note to that effect). I am a direct descendant of Alexander William Douglas, born in 1797 in Montgomery Co., GA and died 13 NOV 1870 in Appling Co., GA. He married Dicy Watson on 14 FEB 1828 in what is now Ware Co., GA. He and Dicy are buried at Douglas Chapel in Alma, Bacon Co., GA (as are his descendants to present). Now for the information gleaned from websites, etc. We suspect a connection between our Alexander William and the Alexander and Elizabeth Webb (from Chowan Co.) to which several of you have referred. However, we suspect that the Alexander (Chowan Co.) was our Alexander William's uncle. Family stories indicate that Alexander (Chowan Co.) had a brother, Frederick, who was our Alexander William's father. HOWEVER, we have been unable to find any documentation to substantiate. To make for even more "fun", according to "Douglas-One Family's Story" by Stacy Clinton Douglas, the Alexander from Chowan Co. who married Elizabeth Webb was not born there but immigrated from Tyrone Co. Ireland sometime after 1770. Do any of you have documentation supporting or refuting this report? As I mentioned, I am learning about genealogy from my father and am still figuring out the research process. I would appreciate any input on the above or genealogy in general. I would welcome correspondence. Thank you. Jennifer (hifromjgd@aol.com) p.s. I've emailed the Chowan Co. Chamber for information on a Historical or Genealogical Society. I will post any info.
