Maurice JONES should read Maurice MOORE and the Inglis Fletcher book is "Lusty wind for Carolina" rather than "Men of Albemarle." Both are great books about Chowan Co folks and Edward MOSELEY is in both books. Moseley and Moore were assisted by Thomas Luten and Henry Clayton in their heist of public records Eden was keeping at his house at Sandy Point on the Albemarle Sound. (His house was beside Mulberry Hill, the famous Blount house on the sound. (It has a golf course in the front area now--the second 9 holes of the Chowan County Club. Hope to play there soon.)

    3. Hi Norma, I may be able to help you on this one. . Edward Moseley (d. 1749) succeeded John Lawson as surveyor general from 1710 to about 1730. He was Commissioner for the North Carolina-Virginia, North Carolina-South Carolina, and Granville-North Carolina boundary lines. Moseley was a member of the Council, a prominent lawyer, Public Treasurer, Chief Baron of the Exchequer, and Associate Justice of North Carolina. The original is currently held in the manuscript collection @ Joyner Library here @ East Carolina University. If you will go to the following website you can view the map. I am a graduate history student @ the university. One of my classes has a webpage with the map on it as we are using it for research in a slave narrative we are currently in the process of annotating. http://core.ecu.edu/hist/cecelskid/chowanmap.htm Regards, Theresa Nelson

    3. Posted on: Chowan County NC. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Chowan/815 Surname: MOSELEY, WARD ------------------------- Ms. Smith, Edward MOSELEY was the Surveyor General of the province of NC in the early 1700's. He produced a map of the province known as the "Moseley 1733" Map. Many names appear on the map at the location of their plantations, including the name E. MOSELEY. A few miles northeast of E. Moseley is J. WARD, the Ward in question for me. The old "J." looks like an "I." Inglis Fletcher wrote many historical novels about early NC. She reportedly researched a year and wrote a year. Historians have been impressed with her historical accuracy. Some say she was a better researcher than writer, although I enjoyed all of it. "Men of Albemarle" is one of my favorite, and your ancestor Edward MOSELEY is one of the main supporting characters. He and Maurice JONES gave Gov. Eden a hard time; in the book and in real life. Fletcher's books are a good introduction to our early NC history and ancestors. William P. Cumming wrote "North Carolina in Maps," published by Raleigh, Division of Archives and History, in 1966 and reprinted in 1992. Moseley's 1733 Map is included with the maps that come with this pamphlet. NC Archives should be able to advise you on purchasing if you desire. A few years ago the cost was $25. Regards, Al Ward

None of my records have sources so I am trying to confirm or disprove them. One statment that I have is "The original map of the area is in England and the curent state line between North Carolina and Virginia was surveyed and mapped by him." refering to the person this report says is Colonel Edward Moseley. My question is "What is the Moseley Map mentioned in your query?" Does it relate to the above statement? Thank you Norma Smith Fort Worth, Texas

(probably Tyner) Bryant previously married to a LAYTON; 2 sons; Gussie and Raliegh. Betty previously married to a DICKERSON; 1 son Elijah, 1 daughter Maybelle. It is thought that Bryant may have died in a hospital in Edenton of a heart attack. on 4/1921, I was in Tyner this past week, it is thought that Bryant's grave may be in somebody's yard or farm, I couldn't find his grave in any of the churches there. He was a sharecropper, a white male of 50 years. One of his sons, Gussie, has a farm in Merry Hill. Betty had her two children with her in Tyner and she gave birth to my Grandmother on 10/1921. It is possible she lived in or on a place called White Marsh. Maybe a road in NC or the town near Suffolk VA. Please anyone with info, I need to find him. My Thanks, Kathy

    3. Posted on: Chowan County NC. Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NC/Chowan/800 Surname: Hoskins, Whedbee, Durant ------------------------- Sarah Hoskins, one of the signers of the resolutions of the Edenton Tea Party in Chowan County, NC, is a direct ancestor of mine (one of my great-great-great-great-great-grant-grandmothers). Sarah Whedbee, born on January 23, 1717/8, was married to William Hoskins (date of marriage unknown but it occurred before 1749, when she is referred to as Sarah Hoskins in her father's will). William Hoskins' will was executed on October 7, 1766. It mentions seven children: three daughters (Sarah Sutton, Mary Hoskins, and Ann Hoskins), and four sons (Thomas, Richard, William, and John). The four youngest children (not clear which of the seven they were) were "under age" at this time. Thomas, Richard, and William were the executors of the will. I am descended through Mary Hoskins, who married Edmund Blount on February 26, 1765. Are you descended through her or one of the other children? Sarah Hoskins, as a widow, became the third wife of Joseph Blount (bond dated May 18, 1771). She apparently retained the Hoskins name when she signed the Tea Party resoutions in 1774). I do not know her death date or the birth dates of her children. Sarah Whedbee was the daughter of Richard Whedbee (born February 2, 1687; will dated June 16, 1749 and probated August 1749) and Sarah Durant (died April 4, 1728), who were married on February 4, 1709. Her siblings were John (born April 23, 1715), George (born January 19, 1720/1), Ann (February 18, 1723/4), Joseph (March 12, 1725/6), and Hezekiah (born April 1, 1728). The above information is found in the privately published book (c. 1996): 'Family Records as compiled by: Emily Waff Bailey and Mary Elizabeth Waff Staples.' Their research, conducted mostly prior to 1960, was based, for the above data, on 'Hathaway's Historical and Geneological Register' and and the wills cited. If you desire, I can supply additional information on the ancestors of Richard Whedbee and Sarah Durant. In the meantime, it is worthwhile noting that the latter was a granddaughter of George Durant, one of the leaders of Culpeper's Rebellion, and Ann Marwood (North Carolina's first female attorney). Considerable information on George and Ann can be found at the following Web sites: Culpeper's Rebellion http://gen.culpepper.com/historical/rebellion/default.htm George Durant - Albemarle Patriot and Politician http://www.cais.net/barclift/familypages/durant.html Ann Marwood Durant - First Female Attorney in North Carolina http://www.cais.net/barclift/familypages/marwood.html Durant Family of Perquimmons County, N.C.
