Hobbs & Lillian Blanchard-Hobbs families. These are my grandparents who lived in Gates County, North Carolina. They had the following children: Bernard Hobbs (dec'd)- I believe killed in WWII Edith Hobbs-Herndon (dec'd) Marvin Hobbs "Joe" - surviving Wallace Leslie Hobbs - surviving Melba Hobbs-Musgrove - surviving Pat Marnace Hobbs - surviving (born in 1936) Louise Hobbs-Holland - (dec'd) Does anyone have any information regarding the early ancestors of this family and where they might have originated from? They were born and raised in Gates County, North Carolina. I believe some of our family is in Chowan County and the surrounding areas, or they were at one time. Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Brinn in Hyde County, was a "full-blooded Chowan Indian." I have spent several hours on the internet trying to find something that referred to the "Chowan Tribe" and I haven't been able to find anything. Is there any truth behind a "Chowan Tribe?" I'm skeptical of this "fact" regarding my great-grandmother. Perhaps someone could enlighten me on the subject. Thank you!

Lavinia's mother, Martha Rea, left the Family Bible to Lavinia in her will dated 1846. If anyone has any info on Joseph & Lavinia's children etc it would be appreciated. I hope to find the "needle in the haystack!" A miracle may occur and produce that Bible. Never know!

I am not positive but Zeigler used to be connected to a furniture store bldg. I was told Evans took over a furniture store & funeral home when they started. In particular, I need to find one Vinson Jones who may have been the son of the above William. The Jones and Vinson families were connected in some way in Brunswick and Surry counties in Virginia. Vinson Jones moved west and settled eventually in what is now Alleghany County, North Carolina on the South Fork of the New River. He named his first son William.

My 3rd great grandparents were slaves in Edenton, North Carolina their names were Aaron Muse Johnston and Margaret Badham Muse Johnston. I am trying to locate a death record circa 1870-1880 on Aaron Muse Johnston he used both names. I am also trying to locate further information on Miles and Mary (Polly) Badham resided and died in Chowan County.

Hello, I am new to the list. I wonder if anyone could advise me about African American sources for information. I am looking for Church records, Census, & Cemetery records. I wonder if there is a register for the Vine Oak Cemetery on Granville Street that is more recent than the one done by the DAR in the 1930's. Is there anyone in Edenton that might have this register? I am also particularly interested in the Hawkins Chapel Church register and Cemetery Records. Two people that I am researching were burried there without tombstones.....no dates....unless the church has records. Have marriage records been published for African Americans in Chowan County? How can I obtain a copy? I have an 1850 census which has only "White families" listed. Can someone tell me if there is an 1850 & 60 census published with the Negro's included? If anyone has this, I would consider it a great favor if you would do a lookup for me. I'm looking for Shepard Brown or Brownrig b about 1847. Anything that you can share with me about African American Research in this county would be greatly appreciated. Alice Griffin

Census. He was married to Caroline. A family member said that they are both buried at the Hawkins Chapel Cemetery at Va. Fork, near Edenton, NC. There are no tombstones. I am looking for death dates and a marriage date for these two people or any information about the above mentioned names. Family also says that Caroline's name was "Carolina" and her maiden name could have been Brownridge (Brownrig) or it is possible that she remarried a Brownridge or Brownrig. She is believed to have come from the Harris Landing area of NC 1910 Chowan Co. Census lists: Sheppard Browned, black, age 60, second marriage, married 30 yrs., farm laborer Caroline, black, wife, age 40, 1st marriage, 9 children born - 7 children alive Pearl age 22 daughter (Pearl wed Joe Bonner) Mary age 17 " (Mary wed John Perry / Wm.
