Appears as Rakahak on Ogilby map, 1671, and Rockyhock on the Mosely map, 1733. Name may be derived from an Indian village, Ricahokene, on the e side of Perquimans River at Albemarle Sound. My husband's ancestor, Thomas BETTERLY, bought land in 1719 in what was then Chowan Co. but later became Bertie Co., described as: "...1420 acres more or less, joining Henry SPELLER, COGSWELL, DOWNING and Morattock river as by Patent 1 Dec 1712 to Edward SMITHWICK now decd. and by William CHARLETON conveyed to the sd. Paris 15 Apr 1718 by Vertue of Power to him granted by the last will and Testament of the sd. SMITHWICK..." I can't find the Moratuck River (by any spelling) in my NC Gazetteer. I'm still seeking a relative of Maurice L Bunch ( he and his wife were register of deeds Chowan County), he was related to a minister. This minister had a deed about John Cale "Indian". I know Chowan County has many Bunch family researchers. Would appreciate any input. This minister died in the 1920's or early 1930's. Thanks Neil

John Baptist Beasley was the son of Joseph Beasley and Elizabeth Norcom. Joseph was the son of John Baptist Beasley (b. 1735 Chowan Co. d. Jan 1790, Chowan Co.)and Elizabeth Blount. John Baptist Beasley was the son of Robert Beasley and Sarah Baptist. Robert Beasley was the son of James Beasley( d. 1720, Chowan Co.) and Mary Cropley. marr. 17 Mar. 1695 James Beasley was he son of Robert Beasley (b.~1640 in England) and Sarah Loadman.

I've not pursued any more than this but I hope it may help.

Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Chowan/10928 Surname: Warren ------------------------- This may not be a lot of help but we have a Mary Norcom b. ~1684 to Thomas Norcom and Mary Leary in N.C.(Probably Chowan or Perquimans Pct.) with a marriage to Abraham Warren Sr. b. ? d. 1710. The marriage date was 23 July 1701 in Chatham Co., N.C. Her name given on one record was Rebecca Clapper (John Clapper being her 1st husband). The "Rebecca" we think is the same person as "Mary" who also later married Thomas Blitchenden and their children were born 1715,1716,1718 & 1720. So the date of death of Abraham Warren in 1710 would at least fit the chronology of the later marriage and children's birth. We don't know how the "Rebecca" crept in but it seems to the same person.

Our record shows her father as Henderson Standin and (?) {maybe your 'Mary'. Other children of Henderson were: Edmund, Jospeh, Deborah, Elizabeth, Henderson, Lemuel, & James. One of Dr. John Norcom's children Edmond (b.~1766 Chowan Co. d.?) married one Sarah Sutton 21 May 1791 in Chowan Co. (Uncle?)Lemuel Standin was a witness. P.S. My Grandfather was Henderson Standin Norcom (1862-1934) who moved from Edenton to Indian Terr. (OK) as a young man.
