I still think we are speaking of the same line although I had no idea Rufus N. Hollowell married Nora. Do you have a date? Rufus married Harriett V. Harrell on 10/9/1895 in Chowan County. If it is the same Rufus....his parents were: Noah Hollowell b. 1835 d. Bef. 1900 marrried Bathsheba Lassiter b. March 1835 d. unknown. They married 11/11/1864 in Chowan County. They had: Rufus N. Alphiene McKleber Nancy Elenore Walter L. Eva Bell Noah's parents were Noah Hollowell and Charlotte Forehand. My list goes on and on. Still matching?
Renee, thanks for your sharing the info. I don't have the background on my 3GG'maw Nancy Ann, if you would like , I will appreciate any additional info on the Miles/ GHassell family. Sincerely , Your "cousin" David L Austin Slack
Did you ever get any information on Ann Hassell? What I have is: Nancy Ann Gorman Hassell, born 2/13/1806. Oldest of 7children of Miles and Lavina Baines Hassell. I am a decendent of Miles and Lavina thru their daughter Martha Frances. I have information back to Benjamin Hassell who came in the 1700's from England.
We have corresponded before and I appreciate your help with the Elvey Lewis, Luten and Lee lines. My gr-gr-grandfather was Henry King (1792-1854), father of Abner H. King who married Elizabeth Lewis (sister of Emeline Lewis), dau. of Elvey Lewis. I see that your message connects Abner's King line (my own) to Chowan Co, NC. Do you have any proof or evidence of that? Also, do you have any information (whether or not proven) as to Henry's parents, siblings or other NC family? I believe that Henry had a brother, Lewis King, who died 1815 in Morgan Co, GA, as a result of wounds or illness incurred in the War of 1812 (Creek Indian Wars?). This Lewis King's wife was Martha Flournoy. They may have had a sister, Mary King Vining, wife of Benjamin Vining, who served as admr. of Lewis King's estate. And I believe that their mother was Susannah King, widow, of Burke Co, GA, ca. 1805. Susannah was probably related to a Thomas King of Burke Co, GA, ca. 1805. My gr-grandfather, Lewis Hilliard King (son of Henry King), married Eveline Lewis, dau. of Necy Lewis and Rebecca Eason Thigpen. Rebecca was the dau. of Rev. Joseph Thigpen and Clara Eason Thigpen, who came to Alabama from Johnson/Pitt Co, NC. I have been looking for any possible connection between our Elvey Lewis and my Necy Lewis. If you or anyone else can help with any of this, it would be much appreciated.

The Noah Hollowell you reference I think does link into this line...I think. Rufus N. Hollowell b. 1865 married Harriett V. Harrell on 10/9/1895 in Chowan County. I have no further info on this past Rufus. When did Rufus marry Nora? If we find we speak of the same Rufus, I can help you !!
Is there anyone researching the ELLIS family in Cowan County? I am looking for information on Lawson Eugene Ellis and his father, Jeremiah Ellis.
Hi, I saw your message about your White ancestor who married Charity Gregory. Do you have any info on her? I think she may be my g-g-g-g-g-grandfather's sister or aunt.
I am also kin to Hollowells of Chowan County. My great-grandfather's name was also Noah Hollowell. I do not think he is the one who wrote the will as he was very poor. My great-grandfather's wife was Martha Goodwin Hollowell. His parents were Rufus N. Hollowell and Nora Virginia Ashley. Please contact me if there is any connection between your Hollowell and mine.
I have an old article that I found on microfilm on this from the "The Orient Newspaper" in 1897 about this fishery. Dr. William Rhodes Capehart was owner at the time, he was assistant surgeon during the "Civil War". As I remember it was the largest herein fishery in the world during this time period. I will try to find this article! -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of bjwl401217@cs.com Sent: Monday, July 23, 2001 8:57 PM To: NCCHOWAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Capehart Fishery on the Chowan River Would like any information on Capehart Fishery which was located somewhere on the Chowan River around 1884? It seems that an Abel Huse came to Newbury, Massachusetts. A descendent Elihu Huse and various members of his family, for some unknown reason changes their name to Hewes. I have a copy of the "Descendents of John Hewes" book. This book was commissioned by David Hewes of California. In studying over it -- I almost feel that they "discovered" William Hewes of whom Joseph Hewes is a decendent and said these people are all connected. It seems that there are various ones who feel that there is some controversy there. In the research that I have done, it seems that when data was being recorded a great deal depended on the previous entry and the intelligence of the recorded as to which spelling they used - Huse - Hewes - Hughes, etc. So -- I am still muddling through all of this to find out as much as I can about the family and to learn if there is a connection with Joseph Hewes. If you have some specific questions, I may be able to help you.
I have been told that I was related to Joseph Hewes of North Carolina. Do you have info that would link our family here in New Jersey with the signer of the Declaration of Indep. Thank you
My 4GGrandfather, Richard Horn, lived in Chowan and Halifax Counties in the 1700's. He married Sarah (Lee?). They had the following children. (1) Howell, my line, born before 1775, married Patsy Cannon.(2) James (3) Henry (4) Rhoda (5) Patience (6) Hannah, married {1} James Judge {2} Winfield Wright. I'm trying to discover where Richard and Howell are buried, and would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks Bill Horn
I am looking for info on Pattie C. Skinner. There was an application for marriage in Jan. 1883 in Chowan County to Christian Warren Rea. Have not found any proof of marriage but family records say they did marry. I am mainly looking for evidence of children and when/where she died as CW Rea was married to Martha C. at his death. Any help will be appreciated.

Word of > mouth says it may have been a Benjamin Perry. The location is close! Do > you know your Benjamin's sons? > > I have my "feelers out" for ancestry of a JOHN E. PERRY who m. Nancy Hinton Kitchen, 1804. JOHN E. PERRY b. 1767, d. 1851. Nancy Hinton Kitchen b. 1788 was the daughter of JESSE KITCHEN, RS, who m. in Sussex Co., VA, 1787, SARAH JONES HINTON & removed from VA to Franklin Co., NC (1790 Cen.). JESSE d. in 1827. Although a Rev. Soldier, JESSE KITCHEN is not shown in White's abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files. There was a WILLIS PERRY who served for the NC Line (R8139), b. 31 Jul 1756 in Franklin Co., NC where he lived at enlistment and afterwards moved to Warren Co. (formerly Wilkes Co) GA and from there, 1816 or 1817 moved to Jackson Co. GA and had a further removal in 1827 to Muscogee Co. GA where he applied for pension in 1833, in which he referred to a son living in DeKalb Co GA. Scanning the 1787 Census of VA (Schreiner-Yantis & Love, p. 1111), I see in SUSSEX CO., VA, both a BENJAMIN KITCHEN (pd. own tax) 0-0-0-0-4 (4 cattle) and JESSE KITCHEN (pd. own tax) 0-0-1-0-0 (taxed for 1 black under 16) on the List "B". However, in scanning both List "A" and List "B" have not seen any HINTON on the Personal Property Tax. Deeds of Sussex Co., VA show a JAMES HINTON who along with a John Lands, Arthur Freeman & David Mason, witness a deed 8 Feb 1775 Nathaniel Newsum and wife, Susanna to James Barnes, south side of Poplar Swamp. Sussex Will Bk. "B" will of William Parker 6 Apr 1768/19 May 1768 among other heirs lists, "My daughter MARY HINTON" and water courses related to land: Austins Branch, Briery Branch, Indico Branch. Exrs: son William Parker & James Peters; witnesses: Richard Parker, Thomas Sisson, William Price and John Peters. That's all I see on Hinton. Sussex Deed Book "C", 21 Mar. 1765 shows Hinchea Gilliam to Joseph Hartfield of North Carolina...a negro wench and child. Wits: Joseph Renn, Thomas Arendal and B. PERRY. There are two BENJAMIN PERRYs shown in White's Absts of Rev. War Pensions - one in NH and one who served in the VA line, but who was born in 1752 in Spottsylvania Co, VA. The latter, too young to have been the "B." Perry, adult in 1765 in Sussex Co., VA Sussex Co. Deed Bk "D" 30 Sep 1768 shows Etheldred (X his mark) Holt, late of Southampton Co to Robert Bailey of Sessex Co....150 a. bounded by a corner of JOSEPH LANE and William Hix, BENJAMIN KITCHEN, Franklin Clark, William Evans and Etheldred Davis. Witnesses: Joseph Ellis, Nathan Jones, Charles Briggs and John Chappell. BENJAMIN KITCHEN is the only Kitchen in Sussex Co., VA Deed Books A-E (1754-1779); however, in Will Books A-F (1754-1806) several KITCHENs are mentioned: BENJAMIN KITCHEN, ROBERT JONES & Stephen Andrews were witnesses to the will of John Lamb 11 Mar 1785 Sussex Co. Account of the estate of Joshua Pretlow, decd shows payments to a number of people, including JAMES KITCHEN. The will of Nicholas Hancock 21 Jul 1799, Sussex, wife Agnes...several children named and among his five children, JEMIMAH KITCHEN, my eldest daughter. JOHN KITCHEN, John Lilly and Harrison Wynne witness the Sussex Co. will of Thomas Bailey, Sr. 26 Fb 1801. Should this ring any bells, please send me an email. Thank you, Kay G. KLWRAGEG@aol.com
