I had the pleasure of visiting the Evans church this past spring while doing research for a book on a former slave from Chowan county. The church is beautiful, especially the stained glass windows and several of the pews are original to the building as well. I will look up the name of the minister for you and forward it. Unfortunately no records are extant at the church itself, but there were several leads as I recall as to where some might be located. An Evans descendent left the church to an African American congregation just recently, prior to her death. There appeared to be some additions going on when I was there. I do have some Evans family information that you might be interested in such as a copy of Zachariah's will...etc. I do know an elderly lady who is also an Evans descendent living in the county. The history in that are is wonderful and all the families seem to be connected in many ways. The Rockyhock area 'feels' very closed, in a good sense with history near to the top. One does not have to look hard to find it. Many of the old Plantation houses are still extant. If I can be of help, please let me know. There is still some research that I have yet to do...and I need to return some papers that were loaned to us by the Winborne family who are connected to the Evans family. I plan to be in the area in October to return the papers and finish up on my notes. Good Luck! Kindly, Theresa Nelson NelsonT@ecu.edu

It was founded by Zachariah Evans, my g-g-g-g grandfather. I understand that at one time there was a picture of him hanging in the church. I was in the area recently, but there was no one at the church, so I couldn't enter to have a look around. I noted that it is no longer a Methodist Church. Information regarding the present congregation and minister would be helpful so that I can contact someone about being able to go inside the church and perhaps get some information about the picture.

Lewis named a son Moses. The similar names are too much to overlook. Does anyone out there have knowledge of these names? Please help.

James was born about 1690/1695 and died about January 1731 or 1732. James was from Bertie County, NC (which came out of Chowan County, NC),and he and Sarah had three sons: Robert, James, and William. The son named James married Frances ? and then Agnes Cade, and died in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. James was born about 1725 and died in 1777. If anyone has any information about the ancestry of any of these people, PLEASE share it with me. I think the James who married Sarah may have come from Surry County, Virginia. The two James' and Sarah are in my direct ancestry, and I have been searching for more information. I would greatly appreciate any assistance! Thanks in advance!

Of course this would only work if she (or someone you know of ) owned the house. Otherwise you could look her address up in the 1900 and 1910 census. This may be the easiest way. There may also be other public records with her address. good luck

I had an ancestor live on Church Street in 1910, and I'm wondering if one of those homes might have been hers, even though that was 91 years ago. I don'tt know if the homes still exist, or if they've been gutted out and renovated, from when I was there conducting research about 4 years ago. I have pictures-they are tin-roofed, and described in "Edenton:An Architectural Portrait", as "simple gable-roof dwellings..to house the black workers...(see p. 63). How might I find out which one, if at all, was lived in by Mary Blount Blair, in 1900 and 1910?
