    2. Thanks anyway, JERRY. I'm sorry I had the name wrong. Is there any Fisher's at all. I cannot find anything on my great grandfather, Leander Milton Fisher or my great grandmother, Lillian Ann Mashburn before their marriage. Both of them were born there. I was recently told George Fisher was his dad and Emmaline Sutton was his mother. I was also told Emmaline's father was William Mullen. Hopefully someone knows these names. Any information will be appreciated. Karen (Fisher) Wills

    1. [NCCHEROK] Brasstown Carvers
    2. linda rackley
    3. Several people have e-mailed me about the Brasstown Carvers. When the John C Campbell Folk School opened in Brasstown, one of the things they did was teach carving and also offer an outlet for carvers to sell their wares. My father, Nolan BEAVER, was among the earliest carvers for the folk school. He had already done some carving, to create toys for himself. He sold his first pieces for about 35 cents. He said it was enough to get a pair of boot-leg jeans and a movie. He also said he quickly learned that it was a lot easier than working the fields. I personally do not see how the carving could be easier - I have pieces that are not even as large as the nail on my pinky, but still have all the detail of the larger ones! Almost everyone in the family carved - and my Grandpa BEAVER did some of the sanding since he didn't carve. Daddy had a sister named Billy Dean who carved a beautiful Scotty dog - Billy Dean died before she was 8 years old! There are many examples of the work of Nolan Beaver in the State Museum at Raleigh. According to the lady I talked with there, two spinster sisters collected carvings, but only those by Nolan Beaver. When they passed on, they left the collection to the museum. The Folk School also has many examples of Daddy's work. My uncle, Avery BEAVER also carved for the folk school and two colts carved by him were presented to Queen Elizabeth [she was princess Elizabeth at the time] and her sister by the Roosevelts. Uncle Avery was carving a colt just like this one when he fell off the back of Grandpa's wagon and stabbed himself in the heart with his ownpocketknife. Many, many of the families of Cherokee County are represented by the various Brasstown Carvers. Anyone who visits Cherokee County really should stop by the Folk School, especially when the Log Cabin Museum is open. The Cherokee County Heritage Book also has an article on the Folk School, along with a picture which has my Grandmother BEAVER and my aunt Freda Mae BEAVER in it. 2. Hi All! My name is Kurt Matheson and I am researching the names, Matheson, Stalcup, Ricks, Monteith and Hampton in Cherokee County, NC. I am also interested in discussing the Martin's Creek Community which is south of Murphy. There are different stories relating to the period during and after the Civil War I have heard. My grandfather, Willard Matheson was born in Martin's Creek in 1898. His father and grandfather were Methodist ministers in the region (Clay, Cherokee, Macon and Graham Counties). They moved to Burke County in 1910. Best regards, J. Kurt Matheson Greenville, SC

    2. Hi, 1) Does anyone know where Timothy and Lydia Burger Pack are buried. Grayson Newman photographed their tombstones for me, but I don't see a cemetery listed anywhere, and Mr. Newman is now deceased. 2) Also, would anyone know anything about the personal lives of Timothy and Lydia [my g-g-g grandparents]? I know they were married in McMinn County in 1838, [don't know where they were in 1840], that in 1850 they were living in Monroe County, TN and that from 1860 through 1900 they lived in the Shoal Creek area of Cherokee County. Lydia died between 1880 and 1900. Timothy died in 1906. Is there anyone who can put some "flesh" on the "bones" for me? 3) And does anyone know if Wiley Shearer and wife Catherine Ramsey Shearer lived in Cherokee County in 1870 or 1880? He lived there according to the 1840 & 1850 census records, but in 1860 he was in TN--I think Polk. The next time I have any information on him is that he is in McMinn Co according to the 1900 census and buried in McMinn in 1901 [wife in 1900]. I'm interested in finding out more about Wiley. Their daughter Lavada married John Pack. They had Missouri my great grandmother in 1876. 4) Again, I'd like some "flesh" on the "bones" of Wiley and Catherine. Thank you!!!! Mitzi
