I found the Heritage Books in the local genealogical library. They appear to be a series of books that contains hundreds of articles about longtime residents of the various counties. It was very helpful for me as I discovered the missing link I was looking for. Not sure if you can buy them but I do know that you can get lookups from them through the Cherokee County GenWeb site. ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Tindall <ktindall@iname.com> To: <NCCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2000 9:52 PM Subject: Re: [NCCHEROK] website update > I am interested in the Heritage books that you refer to. Hi Everyone :) Recently, I obtained a copy of my GGM's SS-5 form. She was born in 1888, in Cherokee County. From one of the 'vital records' web sites I've learned: >Births and deaths have been registered in North Carolina only since 1913 . Prior to 1913, the state of North Carolina did not use birth records or certificates of any kind. *and* >For birth records prior to the dates listed above, do not contact North Carolina Vital Records or the North Carolina State Archives. There are no birth records prior to 1913 in a North Carolina public office. I'm assuming then, that my GGM didn't have a birth certificate. To obtain a social security number, didn't folks born before 1913 obtain a delayed birth certificate? If this is the case, is it safe for me to send a request to the NC Vital Records office anyway to obtain a copy of the delayed birth certificate my grandmother probably received? I know that Diane's wonderful Western North Carolina web page at Golden Branches has a database for delayed birth certificates but the Holloways haven't been listed yet :) http://www.goldenbranches.com/nc-state/cherokee/data.html Thanks for any advice you can give me and for sharing your experience obtaining this type of record. Kind regards, Mary

Hi all, Would anyone have any information about the Cotter family? They were in Cherokee Co. from at least 1855. Some of the family may still live there. I have some information on James and Elizabeth Cotter from the Cherokee Co. Heritage Books. They had 10 children, the third which, Johnson (John) I am descended from. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. I am more than willing to share any info I have. Thanks Bobb Cotter ----- Original Message ----- From: Shane S.Ratledge <4the3sratledges@compuserve.com> To: <NCCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 7:50 PM Subject: [NCCHEROK] website update > I've added five additional links and updated others on my website called > "Valley River Relatives." Hi Diane, I'm glad you volunteered to host this list! Thanks for doing this for all of us! Sandra
Judy, I would be interested in the Cherokee Co. Heritage, Vol 1 info on Alexander "Mack" Jordan family and the John Mauldin Jordan, Jr. family. Lillie Jordan married Calvin Bishop before 1800 in Cherokee Co. At the 1900 US Census, she had two children from an earlier marriage - Jake Alexander Jordan and John Mauldin Jordan. Is there any chance you could mail me a photocopy? Paul Carter, Arvada, CO BaggyGenes wrote: > Hi Frankie -- There's a write-up in Cherokee Co. Welcome, Diane! I have consulted your website often and with great results! It is easy to read, and easy to use. Thank you! I hope you enjoy being the List Owner as much as I enjoy being a List Member. Arlene Hampton
I, too, am researching the name Roberts. My maternal grandfather's grandmother was Mary E. Roberts from NC. I do not know anything about her family, but she married James R. Jones on Sep 14, 1872. I think she was born Jan 18, 1855. Her family bible is in possession of her grandson (Tommy Jone). He is my great uncle. Does any of this ring any bells with you? TIA, Colleen Woodstock
