    1. Re: [NCCHEROK] Updates vs Emails
    2. Diane I believe you have just answered your own question. If those of us who have sent you such emails, just think about it...we will know how absolutely thoughtless it is, to request such lookups from anyone. If newbies have sent such requests, perhaps they need to query some of us privately, so that we can either offer help, or refer them to help links for those new to genealogy. Do your coding and updates, after being with your family. Family comes first. Your Western NC Resource Center is a valuable tool for all of us. Thank you. Arlene Hampton AhamptonResearch@aol.com

    1. [NCCHEROK] Buce/Buice, Hall, Burns, Newtona
    2. I recently posted a query on William and Pernina Buce. I want to thank everyone who responded. It was just great! We did establish that Elizabeth Standridge was indeed Elizabeth Buce, but in Haywood County where they were before Cherokee County, the name was evidently spelled Buice. Also Pernina's name was Hall instead of Samson, so I'm looking for info on her family. She was born 1798/1800 in Sampson County. And also any info on Mahaly Burns, (William & Pernina's daughter). She was living with them on the 1860 census and looks like she has a 1 year old, Henry and she was still with them on the 1870 census with Henry, 11 and Andy, 8. And last, William & Pernina's son William R. Buce (which is the link this family goes back to).Looking for info on his spouse, Nancy Newton. She was born in NC in 1842 and her parents were Samuel, born in 1814 in NC and Sarah, born in 1813 in NC. William R & Nancy had 10 children born in NC. I know the oldest, Charles Marion Buce was born in Cherokee County in 1863. Again thanks to everyone. This is a great site. Lillian

    1. [NCCHEROK] Delayed Birth Cert. Info
    2. Janis
    3. My grandmother who was born in 1911 in Royston, Franklin Co, GA did not have a birth certificate for much the same reasons already mentioned. When she was ready to retire from Fulton Cotton Mill in Atlanta GA at the age of 65 and ready to draw on her social security, they would not allow her to do so until a 'Delayed Birth Certificate" was applied for. She told them her birth date however, they did not take her word for it. They had to locate her in the census for the county she was born in order to prove she was born *laughs*. At any rate, we all know how that goes...they are usually off by a year or two. She did get the certificate of delayed birth however, they would not allow her to retire for 1 year after the application. I am not sure for this except the census was off a year. I would think anyone in the 1900s would have had to apply for much the same and some record is found. 3. I would agree with Linda. My grandmother who is in her 70's has a delayed certificate of birth from Cherokee County, NC. I asked her about it, and from what I understand it was the exception rather than the rule to register a child's birth. Remember that this was and still is a very rural area where home birth was the norm even up until the 1940's when my father was born in Cherokee County. Additionally my great grandmother served as a mid-wife (1920's - 1940's), and my understanding is that it was the mid-wife's responsibility to report any births to the county courthouse. As such they only did this in batches since it was a several hour journey via horse and buggy. I hope this helps, Joan Duvall Linda Hoxit Raxter wrote: > Not everyone managed to get a delayed birth certificate. 3. Not everyone managed to get a delayed birth certificate. In fact, I think most folks from the 19th century managed to get through life without one. We just had a lady from our community die at age 103 without a birth certificate. Most people never seem to have encountered a reason to get a birth certificate. And more men tended to need them (to get Pension Plan benefits). You might get lucky, but odds are against her getting one. Also consider that the information on the delayed birth certificate is rather limited in comparison to a regular birth certificate and not always accurate. It lists the parents and date and place of birth. There are also three sources of proof which can be useful. But the birth date & parents should also be listed on the death certificate which would be easier to find. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter http://www.rootsquest.com/~alextree lraxter@citcom.net Alexandra's Family Tree House - Western North Carolina Cemeteries ALHN Transylvania County, NC - Transylvania Heritage Today Get Paid to Surf the Web! http://www.alladvantage.com/go.asp?refid=HLE-312
