Hi List, Just wanted to say that I have the 1870 Cherokee co. NC census and would be willing to do lookups for anyone that needs one. Patty Brock
Thank you all for your kind words and responses. After a really lousy day at work, I wasn't ready to study tonight so I coded a new page. The J surnames for the Cherokee County Death Certificates. I know several of you have been patiently waiting for this section. Enjoy! http://www.goldenbranches.com/nc-state Thanks again. Diane
Updates are much better! They help lots more people. And thanks for the great work you have done, despite the many work and family constraints! Diane, I have the exact same problem as you. Do I work on updating my webpages or answer the unending e-mail queries. I set up a "Contact" page on my website, which provides a list of guidelines that a person should consider before writing me (entirely optional though). I have found that the "Contact" web page has helped tremendously. It explains (in a nice way) that I get more e-mail than I can ever answer in a timely fashion, and that I have to try and balance my e-mail with my webpage updates. The link to the page in question is below. If you want to take it and modify it for your own use, feel free to do so. Marty Grant (Marvin Grant Jr) email: public@martygrant.com web: http://www.martygrant.com/gen/contact.shtml
Diane, Thanks for all your hard work. I have trouble just keeping up with reading my emails from mailing lists without having to answer them! A couple of suggestions: Send a message to the list asking that people be as specific as possible. General requests like you give for examples below cannot be accepted. AND/OR Send them the links to those sites where they can find the information (such as Cyndi's cherokee link site, Marty Grant's web site, etc.) if you have them, especially if they are such general requests as those you listed. Thanks again for your hard work. I don't know how you do it all. Hi Diane, I don't see how you do all you do. I can't keep up with all the E mail I get at times. I am greatful you are willing to take on this big project. No one should ask for more when you are giving as much as you can. Families is what genealogy is all about. Too many newbies just don't understand all the research involved. When you have time I'd like to touch base about our Hall lines. After scratching around on them for over 30 yrs, I'm in no hurry. Blessed Be, Cuz, Jo Ann Giles
Dianne, Seems to me you have a plate full right now between your studies, home, children, etc., plus trying to run this site. I think you should do things however they are easier for you -- after all, I personally feel you are doing us a favor to try and do this at all. I think it might help a lot if people would be more specific in their requests -- give one or two names, approximate dates, places, etc. and perhaps just one or two questions at a time. And perhaps if some of us on the List see anything we can look up or help with, or offer suggestions, it might take a little of the load off of you. Just don't worry about any of it. The world won't end if everything doesn't get done just so and in the time frame some would like. Thanks for even taking this on. Warm regards, Shirley Reed

Hi Diane, Glad you are taking care of the list. As for my opinion -- Some people might not know that you aren't living in the courthouse where all the records are kept or that you weren't born in the 1800's when all our ancestors were living. I don't think there is a real clear answer to your question in all honesty. Since you are maintaining the list you know how much time you have to give each day or week so just do the best you can. If the mail has to sit while you update then it has to sit. I don't think that there is a time limit for answering mail. When you are going to update your website just put a note to the list and tell them to hold all mail while you are updating. Is that possible? I wish I had some way of helping. Let me know if there is something I can do. Patty Brock
I agree whole heartedly. Kaye Buckner Presley
Kaye, Do you have the 1870 printed census that was published several years ago? If so, can you tell me who published it, and is it still available for sale? Thanks! Cathy, I purchased the book from the Vonore Historical society. I believe they are still available. I also have all the Bradley County Census index's that are available purchased from the Cleveland Public Library History Branch. Polk County Also has several Census books for sale. The 1900 Census for Polk County will be available any day now. Let me find the address for the Vonore Historical society and I'll email it to you privately. Kaye Buckner Presley
Diane, Do what's fun for you! This should be a break from your regular routine. So, if it's not fun, it's not a break. If updates or emails become another job, then you'll get burnout. Heaven forbid! Hang in there, Girl! Your kids will grow up too fast! They all do. Sandra
My opinion is that your family should come first, the coding and updates second and the emails can wait till you have the time. We should be greatful that you are willing to help us and not be impatient, but be understanding that "I" am not and shouldn't be the most important thing in your life and just know that when you can you will take care of the emails. Most people are understanding and feel the way I do. The others probably aren't ever satisfied any way even if you devoted all your time to them. Thanks you for your kind and willing heart. Hi Everybody -- I need some opinions, please! I have put together the Western NC Genealogy Resource Center. I do have more data to code and put up. My dilema is the number of emails I receive asking for help. (Don't get me wrong, I like to help and share, but it seems to be a one-way share) I hate to have emails sitting in my inbox waiting for further response, so when I get free time, I first catch up on emails before coding and updating the site. Some of the emails I get are along the lines of: My ancestor, Jane Doe was full Cherokee, please send all information you have on her. or I'm researching John Smith. My question is do I let the emails go and do the coding and updates or do I continue as I am and update when everything else is done? To let you know, I am working 46-50+ hours per week as a Computer Test Engineer, studying to take my second MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) test, to of my daughters (10 and 8) are in softball with two games and two practices each per week, my son thankfully took this season off. Plus the normal Mom stuff, laundry (it piles up well!<G>), cooking, nag (about doing chores and homework). So opinions please! Diane
I have the 1870 Cherokee Census and I'll do som lookups for you if that will help. Kaye Buckner Presley
