I am seeking to contact any of the descendants of Able Herman (1833-1864), probably son of George Herman and Barbara Hunsucker. His military record reads: HERMAN, ABEL, Private - 28th Regiment, Co C - Born in Catawba County where he resided prior to enlisting in Catawba County on August 13, 1861. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2-3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 14, 1863, when he was captured at Falling Waters. Maryland Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C., until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, August 8, 1863. Transferred to Elmira, New York, August 16, 1864. Died at Elmira on September 12, 1864, of "chronic diarrhoea." [NCT-8:145] Twenty-one Catawba County soldiers died at Elmira, including Abel Herman. Nineteen of them have been marked with a grave stone but Able is not among them. A page has been created to remember the Catawba soldiers that died in that prison camp. http://www.catawbascv.org/Elmira.htm Able Herman was married to Phoebe Kent (13 Oct 1833 - 2 Sep 1876) on 13 Feb 1853 in Catawba. She was buried at St. Stephens Lutheran Church cemetery in Hickory. It would be appropriate to erect a memorial to stone to Abel Herman as close to the grave of his wife as possible. If anyone would care to participate in this memorial, or if you have any additional genealogical information, please write me. --Derick DerickH@charter.net
