Dear fellow subscribers, Can anyone out there help me? I am at a TOTAL brick wall. I am "pleading" for any help anyone can give. My father (63) has recently been diagnosed with a serious illness. This is the same father for whom I was so desperately seeking the grave of Gaither A. MOSES awhile back. Thanks to a lot of kind people, I found Grandfather Gaither MOSES' grave in Laurens County, SC. However, my brother and I have found NOTHING on David or Frances MOSES, other than to discover they were supposedly married on January 17, 1877 in Burke County and one of their sons, Gaither MOSES was supposedly raised around Ben's Knob, NC, which I understand falls very, very close to where the county lines of Rutherford, Burke, Catawba AND Cleveland counties meet. I am once again begging for your kindly help as time is running out on me! They went by Dave or David and Frances, however, as I understand from a relative, their full names were King David MOSES and Mary Frances HELMS (or HELLAMS) MOSES. They would have been my father's grandparents and my brother's and my great-grandparents. Known children of David MOSES include: Lola MOSES (believed to have married a BABB or BALB and to have owned a farm in upstate SC; she is buried in Laurens County, SC) Ruth MOSES (who married a BELL and she is buried in Laurens County, SC also) Colonel Gaither MOSES (a/k/a Gaither A. MOSES -or- G. A. MOSES and who is buried in Laurens County, SC) Joseph MOSES (believed to have lived in Gastonia, NC and went by "Joe" Moice J. MOSSES (died in Gaston County in 1917 and is buried in Bessemer City, NC -somewhere - we don't what cemetary) NOTICE the name variation, however, her\ death certificate lists Dave and Frances HELMS MOSSES as her parents. David (or Dave) MOSES may have been married prior to marrying Mary Frances HELMS (or HELLAMS) since it is believed that Gaither had some half-brothers and half-sisters. We have discovered that Gaither was apparently brought up around Ben's Knob on "CC" Road (don't know the spelling of the road) - near Casar, NC and still in Burke County. If ANYONE can supply any information to give me a lead in the right direction, I would be most grateful. I promise, I am NOT too lazy to do my own work (I have been to the Burke County Register of Deeds and the Burke County Library) - to no avail. Part of my problem stems from the time frame - my grandparents were born and married BEFORE birth, death and marriage records were being kept. I have also strained my eyeballs out at the Burke County Library trying to find some information on census microfilm. I am at my wits end and as I mentioned above - time is running out for me to find this information. Please forgive the length of this message but I sincerely hope someone out there can help me. ... NOTE: Please "CC" any replies to my brother Jimmy at [email protected] -if you would be so kind as he is not subscribed to this list. Thanks! .... Warmest regards and thanks in advance for your kindness... Hey guys, I'm new to the list and I'm planning a trip to Catawba County in a few days. I am descended from several family lines from the area: John Cathey Nance; Elbert Bollinger and his son (my grandfather), Robert Adron Bollinger; and Solomon Wesley Mitcham. I have been to Catawba once before and visited the museum in Newton and went through Startown where my great-grandfather "Wesley" Mitcham lived. Does anyone have any other suggestions of places to visit that would be helpful to researching these lines? You can email me privately if you do. Thanks, Susan
Hi Susan: I recently returned from Newton, NC. All of my Throneburg line is from Catawba County. Suggestion: The Catawba County Public library is located in Newton. The Genealogy section is on the 2 ND floor. They were very helpful to me. Another Suggestion: Contact "Derick" at e-mail ([email protected]) Derick maintains the Genealogy web page for Catawba County. He lives in Conover, NC which is less than 5-min. drive to Newton. He met me at the Library and assisted me in location the information I needed. He is a super nice person and I know he will help. Hope I have been some help, and good luck in your search. I forgot to tell you that the library in Catawba, has a wonderful library, and if Mrs. Rhodes is still there, she knows things and just how to put your hands on them in no time at all. Betty

Can anyone tell me if there were any orphanages in Lincoln or Catawba Counties in 1915-1925 timeframes. If sowhere were they and how could I look up aperson in their records? Thanks, Ann Reed researching Jonas and Reep Families NC
I called the Catawba Clerk of Deeds yesterday to check how much it would cost to get copies of birth, death, marriage certificates. The answer was kind of odd I thought. The clerk told me she just didn't have time to research old records and the NC Archives had them so ask them. She then check a marriage record for me from 1875 (never had anyone do that on the phone for me) and said she had a "card" on the marriage for Mar 2, 1875 for the bond and Mar 4, 1875 for the actual marriage. She said there was no record of marriage license issued. The couple must have just come in and given the marriage information and it was written on a card for notification purposes. Does this make any sense to anyone? The names of the justice of the peace and the witnesses were listed on the card, but she says there is no signed document at all? Also, does anyone know if any of the justices of the peace in Catawba kept records and are they held in any repository? Also (sorry), does anyone know if the actual court minutes preceding the issuance of a Bastardy Bond are recorded (Catawba again) and where they would be found?\ Thanks to anyone who can answer these. I'm in Florida and dealing w/ the clerk just totally baffled me, but I think that may have been her plan Bambi Woods [email protected]

There is a Deal Book in Alexander Co., and Catawba Co., Library on the Deal Family by Rom Deal written about 1939. When I was back there in 1993 or 1995, it had a reprint by I think the Taylorsville Times, giving the history up to the time of the printing of the book. Betty

I am looking for information regarding the parents or siblings of a Martha Jane Townsend originally from Buncombe County. She was a great, great grandmother of mine who married a Logan P. Caldwell of Maiden, NC who was originally from Lincoln County. Martha Jane died in 1919 at the age of 71 in Lincoln County. She was living with her son and my great grandfather Robert Henderson Caldwell at the time of her death. She moved to Lincoln County in the 1890's (1894-95?) after the death of Logan. If anyone has any information on Martha Jane Townsend in regards to her parents, their parents and so on I would be very grateful. Sincere regards, William D.
